  • A little bit about the Polish breed of chickens. This is a very old breed that has been around so long we don't even know where they truly originate from. While they're in every hatchery catalog, proper specimens are very rare.

    I have 4 chickens. I have had 2 for almost a year, And we just got two almost a month ago. The first two are silver laced wydonettes and the two new ones are a golden laced wydonette and a polish buff laced. They are mainly for keeping as a pet. They are all females too.

    • @ChickenWired

      That is great to hear. Wyandottes are a good breed for the layer flock. Just keep an eye on them so they do not bully the Polish by picking it's feathers

    I love polish chickens but it has been kind of hard for me to keep some. At first we ordered some chicks (8 in total- 2 were polish) but 6 died including the two polish. Then we hatched some but one was mean and partially killed the other so we got rid of it. Now we got 6 (2 houdans, 4 polish) but we already lost one polish. These breeds are awesome and I do hope some of ours make it in the end.

    Thanks a bunch for the video. Very informative. I currently have two polish hens and plan to get a few more. Would you possibly mind sharing the dimensions and any specifications on your chicken pens. They look great and I'd like to build a couple.

    • @ChickenWired
      @ChickenWired  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you like the video! those pens are 8' long, with the runners extending 2' past the pen so you can hook a rope to them. The ends are 4' wide and 4' tall at the peak. The top "spine" of the pen is an 8' long 2x2". The door to the run is 4' tall and 2' wide. I forget the dimensions on the smaller door that goes into the barrel.

    • @ChickenWired
      @ChickenWired  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't recommend more than 4 birds in a pen this size. You can make it longer and attach a second barrel either at the other end or sitting on top of the first barrel for added space.

    We got our first two white Polish for our small Polish farm (lol)... they weren't in a pullet bin but had to rely on the store person to make sure we were getting one male/female. They look like they are about the same age as the ones you showed. One has a waddle and looks like a Cockrell. The other one doesn't but sounds like it's trying to cock-a-doodle ...do Polish young pullets make noise also? ...or should have to start researching sexing before introducing the two with our flock of hens? Thank you for any input

    • @ChickenWired

      They can if properly bred. If bred sloppy the crest can be a serious obstruction. Some people tie the feathers back in a ponytail or trim them from time to time.

      One of my polish chickens is like the first one they was shown , my other chicken cant see at all, she has so many feathers it's hard to trim like her head is a bit bigger than a tennis ball!! She cant see so she normally just follows the other chickens and often misses the food when shes trying to eat (I've only got 2 polish chickens)

    My two polish are meanies and incessantly peck everyone else’s tails. They have plenty of room and things to do. I separate them for a day here or there (in sight of the others but in a cage) but they eventually go back to pecking. Few of my other 6-weekers (all the same age, btw) even have tails or back feathers because of these two. I’m at my wit’s end with them and am sad because I really wanted them. I had two b/w polish years ago and they were perfectly well-mannered.

    • @ChickenWired
      @ChickenWired  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      constant pecking could be a sign of needing more space, a more nutrient rich ration, or I can't help but wonder if the two polish you have are young males.

  • @heatheran4783
    @heatheran4783 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love the polish and have some coming in a few months that are buff. Raccoons in my area would rip that chicken wire right open. Have you had predator issues?

    • @ChickenWired
      @ChickenWired  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      luckily we haven't. there's a combo of things we implement. Our broodpens are mobile, so predators are less likely to get comfortable with their location. Our pens are also out in the open and kept around 6 ft away from the perimeter. We also have two dogs that know their job well.

    • @ChickenWired
      @ChickenWired  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry to hear! just like other breeds, some are and some are not. likely one of three things happened: they either had an unseen issue, possibly were bullied away from the feed if you had an already established flock, or had developed a routine as to where their food and water were at their old place and simply had too much crest and couldn't locate your food and water daily.

    • @vivianyerton7937

      I only remember two of them. One came brownred, toppie and half bearded, the other was solid blue with a toppie and clean face. Thing is the v comb of a polish exists on another section of the dna than the other types of combs, so whenever you cross it you have both types trying to exist at once. This gave them the look of having a buttercup or double bladed single comb.

    One thing I hate is that you pick ur chickens up by tere feet I have 33 chickens at home and I do not do that it's so cruel to them to pick them up by there feet

    • @ChickenWired
      @ChickenWired  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The birds are secured by their feet, that is true, but if you take a closer look you'll see that their weight is supported in the palm of my hand or in the adults it'll be against my arm. This makes the bird not only comfortable but also easier to handle and inspect overall. While sometimes a person has to catch a bird by their leg it is best to be done quickly. I actually prefer to catch with a net if I have the choice. Here's a link that goes more in depth on how to properly hold a chicken. th-cam.com/video/skbwiXp3WtY/w-d-xo.html
