    These planes are surprisingly smooth rides. When I traveled in one, it was honestly one of the most comfortable flights I’d ever been on. Not what I expected from a propeller driven plane, but I was pleasantly surprised.

    One of those plane was stolen and crash on August 10, 2018. I love Q400s, especially I love those rumbling sounds of mighty PW150A turboprop sounds on taxi!

    Watching this reminds me of the numerous trips to took from Fairbanks to Deadhorse on the Q400. Alaska 2817 was the flight. They just pulled out of Alaska a couple weeks ago.

      Michael Kerby Oh no, that's sad. That would be beautiful to fly up there on the Q400. Although Ravn, still flies the Q100 around.

    "Jets are better than propeller ones" is a deeply rooted misconception. I always enjoy flying in a turboprop more than in a 320 or 737.

    • @LoveJT8D
      @LoveJT8D  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed! You’re basically still flying a ‘jet’. Anywhere a turboprop can be added in the trip makes things more interesting. Not much variety otherwise.

    • @aviationweekly8721

      @@LoveJT8D Yes, technically turboprop engine is a "better" version of turbofan in the sense of higher bypass ratio.

    I'm a big fan of turboprop airliners! It makes me very sad that most regional airlines are phasing them out, and switching to pure jet aircraft. I wish that the mainliners like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A-320 were turboprop instead of pure jet. Some say that driving a vehicle with a manual transmission, "Stickshift", is "Real Driving". I say that flying in a propeller driven airliner is "Real Flying"! I personally love the sound that the props make, the "box fan" sound in high idle and taxiing, and the "bumblebee" sound in takeoff and in flght! "Bumblebee Sound" is my name for the bass hum and vibration, heard inside the cabin of a turboprop airliner. It's true, most turboprop airliners are a quite noisy, but the quietest turboprop I ever flew on was the ATR-42, back in 1992 with American Eagle. My girlfriend has given the ATR the nickname, "The Whisperprop".
    It's my understanding that the majority of the public doesn't like the turboprops, one reason being because many of them are noisy. To get the public to better accept the turboprops, thicker cabin insulation would be one solution to reduce the noise. Also, it's my understanding that the majority of the public is convinced that the turboprop engine is a turbocharged piston driven propeller engine, when in fact, it's actually a jet engine with a propeller attatched. If you listen to the engine fire up, and run in low idle, you can hear the whine of the jet engine. The word "Turboprop" actually refers to the fact that it's a turbine powered engine, and not a piston engine. To help educate the public that the turboprop engine is indeed a jet propeller engine, they could paint in big letters, "PROP JET" on the sides of the engine cowels.

    • @LoveJT8D
      @LoveJT8D  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacky Claiborne Agreed and is definitely sad turboprops are becoming more and more rare. They are the only thing adding slight variety to a world of twin fan jets. The ATR 42 is an awesome plane, although haven’t flown on one since the 90s on once Continental Express.

    • @jackyclaiborne2142
      @jackyclaiborne2142 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My longtime girlfriend likes to call the ATR 42 the "Whisperprop"! She and I flew on one once with American Eagle. The ATR appeared to have thicker cabin insulation, which muffled the "Bumblebee" sound, produced by the props during takeoff and inflight. @@LoveJT8D

    The Q400 is a nice plane, BUT, it kind of sucks for super tall people. If my friend who is an Amazonian girl and I fly anywhere on one, we HAVE to sit in the first row because otherwise she is REALLY uncomfortable. I have flown these numerous times in between Seattle and Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Boise, Jackson and Bozeman on ski trips.

      Ben Schaeffer Granted it’s a little tight for us tall folk (can definitely relate) but still more ergonomically comfortable than a crj-200.

    I don't think I would like to be sitting anywhere near those props...for obvious reasons.

    • @bratton79
      @bratton79 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel the opposite way. If the plane is going to crash I think being sliced to ribbons might be a more merciful way to go than to plunge to the ground at the speed of sound knowing that I won't survive anyhow. But all the prop has to do is separate from the aircraft and it will slice through the fuselage like a can opener. If that were to happen nobody on the plane would survive. People would get chopped up, they would get sucked out of the plane and the ones who remained on board would probably asphyxiate before crash landing and exploding into flames. I should mention that I enjoy flying. I only feel a bit nervous during takeoff and landing. I've flown on these Dash 8's a few times now. Invariably I always seem to sit right next to the propeller. I like watching the landing gear deploy and retract.

    • @Gripengamer
      @Gripengamer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, you would have most likley felt more pain if you would have got chopped up by the proppelers, than if you went straight into the ground.
