I have flown both atr 72 600 and dash q8 400 multiple time on same route. everytime I landed at least 10 minutes earlier with dash 8 compare to atr. other than flight time, I haven't noticed any other difference. atr 72 does consumes less fuel and its cheaper to buy but carries same amount of passengers. so I guess it's a win for ATR.

They fixed the icing issue. Finnair subsidiary Norra has been flying 72-500 in Finland for decades, and above the arctic circle aswell. SAS replaced the Q400 with 72-600 so they do work up north. Zero accidents aswell...

I see the Q300 come into and out of Timaru most days, and overhead on the missed approach sometimes. It’s a strong solid machine for regional routes. Bean counters rule though.
Why buy French when you can have Canadian? I'd go with the Bombardier. Some how I think the Canadians put more soul, passion and commitment into their aircraft.
I have the pleasure to have logged more that a hundred flights in Dash-8s. Under the rain, in the snow, at -40 C..... Never a single problem, always a great flight. Long live Canadian Planes!!!

the q400 is the better plane on paper 2x the power gains a speed boost roomier interior flies higher superior range....atr is cheaper to buy so more airlines buy atrs
There would have to be an ATR 92 to make a more complete comparison. Performance? The Dash - Q400 crushes the ATR 72. Those smaller PW120 engines raked on the wing of the ATR 72 look like they would ideally fit the Dash - 300 model. The speed difference of the two planes shows that the ATR is skimping on climb and cruise power in relative terms.
The Q400 looks like crap because someone mounted the gear on the wings. Like it has got a Godzilla-like kick in the butt and now misses something. I take the ATR-72.

I mean, if you consider speed and passenger capacity, the q400 actually burns about 17% less than the AT76 per Km / Mi / Hour

Dash 8. And it's not close. There's a reason ATRs were pulled out of colder regions. Oh and dash 8s perform like jets but can land on anything.
