    I dont know what frustrates me more, this being how i finally learned how to play the pokemon tcg, and not for lack of trying, or Kohdok calling his cards a combo when its clearly a synergy.

    • @empireyouth5791
      @empireyouth5791 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What’s the difference

    • @DEG99Y
      @DEG99Y ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Empire Youth Synergies are typically cards with effects that actively complimebt each other, as they are meant to go together. Combos are typically otherwise unrelated cards that interact with each other better than with others. An example in say Magic the gathering would be a synergy is a card that says "attacking creatures get +2/+0" and a creature with haste. An example of a combo would be a card that says "when this creature enters the battlefield, you gain 3 life and your opponent loses 3 life" and a card that says "when another non-token creature you control dies, you may exile it. If you do create a token that is a 1/1 copy of that creature." Synergy is cards that just work well together and are in fact meant to work together, while Combks are cards that do something together that they can only do together or with very similar cards. A tribal deck is synergy based, an otk deck is combo based.

    • @suddenllybah
      @suddenllybah ปีที่แล้ว +12

      ... eh, the terms are basically synonyms.
      working together vs. joining together basically means the same thing

    • @zjnelson0192
      @zjnelson0192 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@suddenllybah I suppose could benefit from elaborating. They are similar for sure but there is a distinct difference. Synergy is several cards all benefiting each other to an extent, a combo card is two/three specific cards that do something amazing when combined. A creature that gets stronger from a bunch of a card type being in the graveyard and having lots of that card type in a deck is synergy. Having a card that gets stronger when there's a card type in a graveyard and a 2nd card that throws 30 cards into your graveyard is a combo. The first example has the other cards not needing the 1st card to do something. The 2nd example's other card needs the first card to be strong.

    The tutorial was definitely well presented. It even got me excited to start fresh and play the tcg, and I've been playing the pokemon card game since I was a kid when it first released. The rules were well explained and there was barely any missteps from a new player's perspective. I would rearrange a few of the explanations for specific card rulings to help them understand limitations of each card better (specifically bringing up the ruling of the supporter and the difference between that and the item cards as soon as the first one was played or maybe introduce an item first and have them try and play 2 supporters thinking the trainer classes were all the same to better explain the differences/catch the error in the act, but the match had me on my toes and wanting to play a game myself. The cliff hanger route to have the player sub into how they think they would handle the rest of the game is a good interpretation to hook them in, but for my personal perspective, I'm glad you completed the match.

    The Pokémon TCG Gameboy Color game actually had the most SOLID how to play tutorial I ever had. I didn't understand the rules before it and it was actually shocking to me to see how they implemented that way of teaching us how to play.

      The thing about it is. The video game does have some advantages to help better explain card games (over the manual or video/media explanations). The functions are set to where it's impossible to break the rules, even if misunderstood. It was well explained, but there was no room for error in a newbie's perspective because they couldn't deviate from the narrative. That being said it's a great tutorial device, and the pokemon trading card game for the gbc (both 1 and 2) were amazing titles.

    Now this was an awesome Pokemon tutorial, the best I ever saw.
    Not that I watched that many, I think I only watched the Professor's (Tolarian Community College) one day I was curious about it but his doesn't still any particular interest into playing and/or seeking more about this game, same with his Digimon tutorial.
    In the case of Digimon, I only really got interested on it when another youtuber (GoldenNovaYugioh) this time from the yugioh community (I'm into YuGiOh and MTG) make a tutorial about Digimon with the pitch that is like the xyz mechanic and from the perceptive of a player from that game that really still into me a interest into Digimon and I'm watching gameplay video of it ever since, and looks like a pretty nice game that I would like to try for myself one of those day...
    Now returning to Pokemon and this video, you know is good when it leave you hungry for more, so any recommendation of a gameplay channel to start with?

It was basically a dramatization of the tutorial game you play in the game, but it goes the extra mile in showing some mistakes that the player was going to make (like evolving a Pokémon too soon or trying to add too many energy cards in one turn) and explaining why not to do them.

This turns the tutorial form just a teaching tool to a clever bit of marketing for any onlookers who will now want to go out and buy a deck to play that fun deck.

    Some of the best card game tutorials I’ve ever seen. Were in the yugioh world championship DS games. They were placed in a part of the championship side of the game. They go in order of game mechanics. It starts with basic 1-4 star monsters and how each phase works. Then level 5 and 6 monsters. Traps, spells, and so on. And there were duels that basically acted as tests to see what you learned. And winning them each gave enough duel points to buy more cards for you to experiment with. A great incentive for learning in the game. Your victory is rewarded with in game currency. You are Rewarded for learning, this is amazing, also the cards used in these test duels are old classic monsters, such as gagagigo and summoned skull, which makes players see these cards and get excited for what else the game has. Like seeing a picture of a giraffe and getting excited to see what else a zoo has. And the pizzazz comes from who teaches you. THE DARK MAGICIAN GIRL. They have her act as a teacher for the way the game works. Plus after every lesson, they ask you what you learned, giving her something very important, personality, and every time you deal damage, they smile, happy you’re learning. The tutorials may be a bit hand holdy, but, a caring hand to guide you, is important for learning

    16:26 Haven't watched completely yet, but here you could clarify that you can't evolve pokemon on your first turn either. A new player can easily assume that since the Basic mons you start the game with face-down were played before your first turn, it's not the same turn anymore

      I’m not a game design of myself so I can’t really claim to know the answer
      However I feel like it’s dependent on the tone of the game or tutorial or whether or not it’s a mistake the tutorial is trying to display or an accidental posit play
      For example the transformers tutorial videos have Megatron and Optimus playing their game and Megatron uses negative language while Optimus uses positive language

      The goal is to add context to the events unfolding. Accepting that the game has ups or downs is part of it, and it can add to the drama. This is a competition, after all, and without adversity, there is no truimph.

      @codyrdy15 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Kohdok I totally agree that it makes it fun to have highs and lows when creating drama. A specific example of what I mean is at @13:39. Instead of "Unfortunately we can't attack since we went first and can't do anything else so we'll pass" we could phrase it as "While we can't attack due to going first, we get to power up our pokemon for an even stronger attack next turn". Nitpicky, but turns a rule that makes the game feel restrictive and unfun into one that feels empowering and fair.

    I thoroughly agree that the intro game in the Pokemon box sucks for teaching someone how to play the game, but I also had a heck of a time getting kids (who were really excited to finally have their own pokemon decks) to pay enough attention even for it. It does a very poor job explaining what you can do and why, but I think it's OK that it doesn't cover more complicated topics like special energy cards or supporters. It's targeted at 6/7 year olds, too much at once will overwhelm them.
    Not to say you're not generally right in the points here (and I realize this isn't a review of the box), but it bears some consideration when deciding where your children's card game is targeted; what you can present to a 6 year old is wildly different than a 10 year old, etc.

  • @Zthewise

    Yugioh Master Duel has a pretty good tutorial system. It's a bunch of duels teaching you various mechanics and at the end you get a bunch of free cards usually the very ones you just learned how to use. Sure the first game teaching you the mechanic is scripted but the next one puts you In the driver seat to see if you were paying attention. The earlier duels are hard to lose being so easy but they are that way on purpose.

    When I was trying to teach myself the Pokemon card game as a child, I quickly gave up on the game because I thought battles took way too long. The reason? I was discarding all of my energy after every attack. My reasoning? Well, it's energy, and you have to spend energy to do stuff. And the rulebook never says you DON'T remove the energy when you attack.
    The lesson? If your mechanic is themed, and it doesn't function exactly like that theme, make sure to specify even if the rules seem abundantly clear to you. I didn't have access to TH-cam at the time, it was a brand new company and I didn't have internet access because I was a literal child, so I couldn't actually check that my understanding was wrong.

    Whats funny is that i think a game like Yugioh does a pretty good job for the most part of covering all its rules in its rulebooks (whenever they decide to actually include a rulebook in a structure deck, lol), but it doesn't mean shit because no one in the Yugioh community knows how to read.
    Like, if you're getting into Yugioh, I would HIGHLY recommend picking up the Shaddoll structure deck since that has a rulebook which contains all the up to date rules for the game without making you go online to scrounge it up. Seriously, structure decks that come with a fucking QR code on the back that links to a PDF or whatever just grinds my gears. At that point, i may as well just fuck around on an emulator until i get the gist of everything. And in my siblings case, i just built them a deck and we ran through a practice game so that I could give them the rundown of how each turn goes.
    On a side note, i can't overstate how happy it makes me that my sister likes playing the fucking Hungry Burger deck i built. I shifted to a Dogmatika Impcantation build after Halq Don combo got banned into oblivion, and since we're playing with a homebrew ruleset I wrote that allows for a 3+ player FFA, I threw some Generaiders in there for their crazy standby phase knock-on effects. Its not the most busted deck probably in this format (i figure Traptrix or Labrynth is since the rules of this homebrew format are built to promote trap decks a little more), but its still about on par with the other decks I built like Branded Dark Magician, Cyber Dragons, Tearlaments (its a budget build), Sky Strikers, BA Dinomorphia, and Vaylantz toolbox.

    Also worth pointing out those matts often skimp out on important rules interactions and FAQs which then often requires looking on the internet leading to confusion and breaking the immersive experience

    Bad example is EVERY FIRST EPISODE OF THE CORE MASTER RULE YUGIOH ANIME(Duel Monster, GX, 5D's, Zexal, Arc-V, and Vrains)
    Ironically the BEST example of a TCG game tutorial is the first and second and 3rd episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens and Yu-Gi-Oh! Go-Rush(actually, the first episode can suffice to explain the core rules of the Yu-Gi-Oh Rush Duel TCG, but the anime is generous enough that it also explains the complexity of the game in its following episodes.)

    So, I was going to ask what were your thoughts on Yu-gi-oh 's 2 Player starter set Tutorial. It is quite a lengthy tutorial that pretty much teaches all basics and a couple advanced practices (Like how monsters just break the rules like Zeus slap on any Xyz you want or Prime Heart not caring about non-tuners), but what I liked about it is that at one point you get 1 player to shuffle the deck and the manual just lets the player decide the outcome of the duel (Granted 1 player has a far better set up than the other)

    I know how to play the Pkmn TCG now so uh.
    Thanks!
    Also- YGO Master Duel has a solo play tutorial that walks you through each step, slowly, but tells you how to play using the OCG ruleset. It doesn't calculate for the META that the actual gameplay against other actual people will likely use (guilty I used Lyrilusc-TriBrig meta before some recent errata and banlists), but that's a thing you forgot to mention- you never know what your opponent is bringing to the table unless the game has one set meta build (usually that game is dying as a result).
    YGO has a ton of meta builds, and Magic's meta changes not just with the format you play, but also every set that comes out. Even then, there isn't truly set meta because of not just the 5 color system but also the variety of abilities and jank combos that could be made. Granted, that's not something you'd want to bring up to new players, but telling them that there are some builds to help improve starter decks is a great way to incentivize buying into the game further

    Just to nitpick: Yugioh wasn't a tutorial for the card game. At least, the original series wasn't. Yugioh was much more focused on being about friendship and games in general, albeit it focused on Duel Monsters since that became very popular(And Kazuki Takahashi really liked making games). Another thing is that while it doesn't line up with the Konami card game, the Bandai version of Yugioh was a bit more in line with the original series and Duel Monsters.

    Teaching is difficult for anything. It is no different for teaching games. I used to play Pokemon card games when I was a kid. So I was able to follow along very well. The only parts I found weird and confusing is how the new cards work. This is way beyond beginner level. Galarian Pokemon are not too bad. I did play Pokemon Shield video game. So the Galarian Pokemon are familiar enough. There were other things that were weird. One is that the damage of some of the attacks seem so excessive for something requiring two or three energy. That is power creep run amok. Another is that the Spinarak and Zubat lines are black now. What the heck?! When did that happen? They are poison types in the video game. So in the card game they should be green instead. Yeah. Back in my day poison was grouped with grass and bug into the green color. It made a lot of sense. Poison is something that has to deal with life. It was often paired with grass or bug in the video game. Spinarak has it paired with bug. Zubat is rather unique for having it paired with flying. Putting these poison types in with black makes no sense. It gets wierder when the cards have a weakness to fighting. An actual dark Pokemon, like Darkrai, would be weak to fighting at it would make sense. With Spinarak and Zubat, it doesn't. I had to Google Pokemon type chart to doublecheck. I did conform my idea. Spinarak and Zubat actually have double resistance to fighting in the video game. So if they get hit by a fighting move, they only take a quarter of the damage. That is the exact opposite of having a weakness. Granted both Pokemon are weak to rock due to the type other than poison, and rock is lumped with fighting in the orange type. Poison is normally weak to ground, which also lumps to orange. However the type other than poison gets rid of the ground weakness. Spinarak looses ground weakness due to cancling out. Zubat looses ground weakness because its immunity takes over. Maybe imunity is like multiplying by zero, with zero percent being the amount of damage recieved. I do remember the kinds of weaknesses that would make sense. Grass and bug types are weak to fire, which is red. Spinarak would go here. Poison types are weak to psychic, which is purple. Note that poison types only get the purple weakness, if they are not grass or bug. Zubat would go here. In the video games, both Zubat and Spinarak would be weak against psychic. Spinarak is weak to fire, psychic, rock, and flying. Only one would carry over to the card game. Fire makes the most sense. Making Spinarak and Zubat black makes them suddenly strong against psychic pokemon. In the video game, they are weak. It doesn't make sense. Generally the types in the card game are simpler than the ones in the video game. There are wierd quirks. I find it easier to refer to card types as its own seperate thing. I like refering card types by color. It is something I picked up from MTG.
    I never played Doomtown. Now I am really confused with stud. This is something where reminder text would help. That was the last of the seven deadly sins. I don't know why a stud allows for drawing extra cards. Without context, I imagined something different. In the most literal sense, a stud is a male animal used for breeding. It also refers to a man who is very charismatic and promiscuous. So if this would be translated to game mechanics, a male fighter can reduce the accuracy of the attacks of the opponents. This only works on female opponents. The ladies would be so smitten by the stud, they would be reluctant to hurt him. That is how attraction works in Pokemon. So I thought of that. The attract move can be taught to a wide variety of Pokemon using a TM. This would be in the video game and not card game. The video game takes gender into account. The most notorious example of attract is Miltank. I remember fighting Miltank back in the day. I think people complain about it too much. Just get a Machop via NPC trade, and train that. It is fine. Gosh I feel old. In the Johto remakes I like to get a Heracross early using headbutt, and just use that. Tauros is the male verson of a Miltank even if there is no evolution connection. I think it would be cool to have a baby calf pokemon. Then it can have branched evolution depending on its gender. That would be neat. Maybe there is a way to have a stud in the Pokemon game. One can get a really handsome Toros. Then he can use attract to make all the ladies swoon in battle. Alternativly one can put Toros in the daycare with a female Pokemon or a Ditto. Then they get Pokemon eggs. I did look up Toros on Bulbapedia. I did confirm that this Pokemon can learn attract. I also found this is in the field group. So only females in this group would be compatible for breeding. It is good to keep word meaning in mind. It can help or hurt with understanding. The video in reminder text has burn as an example. There were two ways that could translate to game mechnics. I thought of a whole different mechanic, due to my experience with pokemon. The mechanic is doing a damage over time. Both the Pokemon card game and video game does this. This video on tutorials briefly mentions the burn mechanic.

      Pokemon EX (Capitalized) warped the format irreparably. They were so powerful that they decided the Meta. This also caused Stage 2 Pokemon to be "too slow" to set up, and so they have crazy power to compensate. Granted, Cinderace's 150 for 2 is still high. It misses a turn to attack. Crobat's 100 for 2 is only "okay", but it's designed to go into any deck to be a draw engine, really.
      And yeah, Poison's been shuffled a few times. It was Grass, then moved to Psychic, and now it's Dark, because Fairy was folded into Psychis.

    What does this weakness and resistance mean on the card?

    • @luchotenks2310
      @luchotenks2310 ปีที่แล้ว

      It means the pokemon takes extra or less damage from an opposing pokemon of that type. For example, if a pokemon has a +20 weakness to water, it will take 20 more damage when attacked by a water pokemon. On the other hand, if it has a -30 resistance to electric, the damage it takes from an electric pokemon's attack is reduced by 30. Some attacks may ignore the effects of weaknesses and resistances in which case it will be explicitly mentioned in the card's text.

    Probably the most confusing pack in for a board game I've ever gotten was the video for the GM vs Player game Dragon Strike, where it's useless as a player's intro as it barely touches on mechanics in the game, sets it up as a 'typical' TTRPG (feels like a multi map campaign but it's actually just a series of 20 one off adventures with NO continuity in both story and player development), and gets so many rules wrong it feels like it was based on a version that didn't playtest well (introducing monsters that are NOT available in the box, using the WRONG MAP for some board cut backs, and introducing concepts and abilities that either DON'T EXIST or breaks the rules such as enemies that can transform or using feats to deal damage or kill monsters). It's also useless for the GM as none of the tips matter for running the game, more just general tips if you wanted to be a GM...of DND instead. The VHS tape is also pretty long, lasting for 30 minutes for everyone, 35 minutes for those that wish to play as the GM. So, it even fails as a demo to try to get players interested in playing.

    A lot of the confusing directions that have come up show how card game designers overuse complex sentence structures. Simple sentences do run a risk of sounding a bit choppy. also magic and Pokémon literally rotate out their cards meaning practically almost all their cards affectively get banned along with almost all of the cards in any previous format, also Matchington gatherings judge rule book is bigger and more complicated than anything you could find in Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon introduces a new mechanic every rotation with some of them pretty much being old mechanics with a new name. @@empireyouth5791 I'm talking the major shifts that ended up causing further rule changes in yugioh specifically: like the addition of banishment being modified to include the removed from play cards until they got reprinted, or how pendulums changed up the trap/spell zone and was tweaked multiple times, the mess of 'timing' being redefined when hand-traps were introduced, xyz monster materials being in limbo screwing up several predefined archetypes and playstyles that relied on cards being in a particular spot of the board, so on and so forth. While I haven't looked up the tutorial for in years, friends that were more hardcore about it quit before I did, usually it was because of such rule differences and chainable interactions; so my comment was more aimed at how it would feel like a nightmare to teach a new player the game from scratch.
      I don't know anything of pokemon or magic regarding their card games, hence why I specifically didn't mention them, neither am I interested in starting. @@XperimentorEES “ like the addition of banishment to include remove from play cards” what you said is factually incorrect, they never changed vanishing to include remove from play , what they did was renamed the term “removed from playing” to “banish” this isn’t changing the rules as you could just simply place “banish” in any place where “ remove from play” is , this is a game Erratic and Erratic shouldn’t be in rule book, what should be done in this scenario is just half every new rulebook use the new terminology and Re-print old cards with the update text which They did, they took the appropriate action so I don’t know why you’re trying to use this as Proof of incompetence,
      “ And how pendulums change the spell in Trap zone Multiple times”
      Pendulums only changed the spell in Trab zone ones this Is either a lie or miss information, in their first introduction they were “additional pendulum zones” that were added, this does not change how the spell in traps zones operate but rather adds to the game, The only time they changed it was in master rule four , and in all rule books printed afterwords they clarified your most left and right spell and trap zone Are just spelt and trap zones until you activate a pendulum card into them, then they become pendulum zones and follow all Previous rules,
      “ missing the time in being redefined after the introduction of hand traps” hand traps has existed ever since the start of Yu-Gi-Oh with kuriboh, I don’t know what you’re talking about, The only thing that comes close is the Additional clarification they added “ if multiple effects in the hand would trigger that was special summon a card you can only trigger one of them in the chain” when the card green baboon and yellow baboon were add it to the game but that is clarification not a Game rule, Putting that in the rulebook would be the equivalent of putting “ if you destroy a monster with a card affect and if there is a card that states “ any card sent to the graveyard is banish instead” that card will be banish” The only other thing you could be talking about is the OCG and TCG different in there hand trap trigger windows But that’s not a Game change rather than the two different regions having their own rules
      “XYZ being in limbo” finally one That is an actual rule change, and no the only thing that screwed over was Dino rabbit which was a tierzero deck That was too expensive for the average player, yes they change the rules however they updated The information in the future Rule books , and again no archetype was relying on this factor for functionality The change literally only hurt was sangan Which state it was abused in Dino rabbit, This wasn’t as big of a lose as you’re making it out to be, What is this about cards needing to be on a specific spot of a board this was never a thing during the XYZ era, The closest thing is in the middle of the GX era where they printed cards that work with columns and none of those relevant or good, and even then I don’t see how this change would effect how they operate
      “ I haven’t looked up the tutorial in years “ you should before commenting that the games tutorial is bad,
      “friends that were more hardcore about it quit before I did, usually it was because of such rule differences and chainable interactions; so my comment was more aimed at how it would feel like a nightmare to teach a new player the game from scratch” that’s because they’re Most likely talking about ruling interactions in terms of card affect interacting, including this in the rule book the would be as dumb as stating “ if you destroy a monster with a card affect and if there is a card that states “ any card sent to the graveyard is banish instead” that card will be banish”, This is a problem on the game but isn’t a Teaching problem and more of a getting a novice to confidence problem, besides magic has a big amount of these things yet that game is to be super noob friendly, Acting like having these is the issue ignores the actual issue which is the amount of information people give to a new player
      But if you want to teach a new player simply burn all the excessive details and teach them the basics as they need it
      “ I don’t know about magic the gathering or Pokémon or anything regarding those games” we just watched a video about Pokémon that was a tutorial video on how to play Pokémon, do you know something about Pokémon, and the reason why I mentioned other games in my first comment is because they are comparisons, if you view is bad it needs to be worse than the status quo, if you act like it isn’t then it’s would be ignoring the reality of TCG, if a person get a a knife , and states “ this knife has a hard time cutting through wood therefore it’s bad” everyone look at that person if they were crazy because everyone knows that it’s pretty standard for knifes not to do too good against wood. If you don’t have other standard TCG‘s as a reference point you can’t say is good or bad at it’s tutorials, you literally have no context to call Yu-Gi-Oh! bad, try and play other TCG’s before coming to the conclusions about Yu-Gi-Oh! because this is needed to understand if yugioh is a bad a TCG, I am not stating you should just got experience with other TCG‘s add validity to your word , as it stands now your words have lost all there validity by simply mentioning this
      “ frankly you’er standing as rude as your oblivious” well hopefully my explanation exclamations show and prove that I am not oblivious to yugioh or TCG design, and trust me I’m not being rude I’m just being informative, you’re probably only saying that because I am disagreeing with you which is understandable I know it’s hard for people to not be mad someone is disagreement them.
      “ more cost effective hobbies” TCG are only as expensive as you want to be, unless you’re playing competitive . But I doubt you are,but if the physical card game was that expensive why don’t you just use dueling book or ygopro you know you could play those for free and experience Yu-Gi-Oh right, you know they have existed since For a long time and was always an option right, you are an actual Yu-Gi-Oh player are you not?

Actually you sound like a buddy of mine who used to, though surprisingly he was still more obsessive about it, since he followed the meta and regularly compared pricing options just to be competitive; never brought up a deck less than 50 bucks, and often they were over a hundred.

I never qualified for even the local tournaments for being outplayed, but also didn't spend more than a twenty on any given deck as I never bothered trying to sink money into any recently released cards; so long story short yes I played regularly but as a casual almost exclusively. I dropped the hobby cold turkey around the time they started the 'link' monsters whenever that was. I liked the initial idea of it being a gatekeeper against extradeck floods, but after seeing some of the early launches were just going to be assisting the solitaire style anyway, I stopped playing altogether.
