    I still learned NDB IFR in the dark ages. Gods, how I hated them. I still remember my CFII having me fly an NDB approach, having me take my hood off at the MDA, and finding myself half a mile off centre-line of the runway. And being told "you actually flew that approach perfectly, this is a lesson: NDB approaches, just don't!" Oh, and subscribed! Bingeing your videos right now.

    Started using navigraph around a year ago on x plane, absolutely love it, and am learning even more about it with these videos! Never have looked at airspaces and always wondered how to know what centers to contact while enroute without atc directing you. Thanks for the thorough explanation!

    Thank you so much for these instructional videos. Your explanations are perfectly pitched!! I have just added the Navigraph data to MSFS and it certainly makes life much easier. I just did my first GA cross country IFR flight in Southern Italy, using a SID at one end, and an ILS at the other!

    Hello my dear David,
    Thank you very much for taking the time to explain these fantastic tools such as Navigraph in that detail so that we can apply them to the fabulous FS2020 with more efficiency and skill.
    You have an unbeatable ability to teach, congrats.
    I would like to ask you a giant favor and it is the following: Could you please create a set of tutorials to prepare a flight plan (it can be very short) using Navigraph to learn; the routines of that process and then load it into the FMC of the fantastic 787 that comes with FS2020? Thank you in advance for your attention to this message. Good luck! and I look forward to your answer!

    Note that in other countries the Transition Altitude between local QNH altitudes and Flight Levels based on standard pressure may differ (US/Canada both use 18000', but I believe New Zealand uses 13000' for example, while in some other countries it varies from airport to airport). Presumably this also applies to the change between use of low- and high-altitude charts.

    Thanks a lot for making this series, David. I've been thinking of signing up for Navigraph to get a bit more serious about my sim aviation but found the whole thing a little daunting and it's hard to find thorough breakdowns of how to make use of it. With this video series I'm confident it's time to sign up and start playing with it.

    The VORs are aligned to magnetic north when they are built and do not change even if the magnetic field changes (they do). So the 'tic' points to 'a north' not 'the north'.

  • @kendalley2314
    @kendalley2314 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent ... thankyou ... incidently I have noticed that at ground level a VOR signal may not be received until airborne ... also distance from a VOR station does appear to affect whether the signal is received ... however I’ve not checked this out for specific figures👍

      Interesting. I was not sure how much they would have modeled this. I wonder if line of sight is a thing or not. Would be interesting to get low with a mountain between you and the station and see if its blocked. I'd be very impressed if this is modeled.

    Do I absolutely have to follow these segments when flying IFR ? Sometimes there a big gap between last point of departure and first waypoint where I end up in between routes.

    • @NOTAM1
      @NOTAM1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope, at the end of the day what you file is what was accepted, but ATC can always re-route you as they see fit, and if you see the dotted line that cannot connect it usually means that airport doesn't have published procedures and if you click the dotted line it will say "vectors" meaning that ATC will vector you to your destination.

    As you described the difference between IFR and non-IFR airports I noticed 3LA4 and Woodworth, both close to where I live and both blue on the low and high en route maps. Both have IFR capability, but no Jeppeson Charts. Do you know why this might be? Also, do you know why some blue airports have a solid blue dot in the center, and some do not? All of the green airports seem not to have the dots.
    BTW, thanks for your Navigraph videos. I just got a subscription, so these videos will be a great introduction to them.

    • @NOTAM1
      @NOTAM1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may have misspoke... just means they don't have published routes. Many airports have implemented (especially RNAV now) approaches but they are not published. This is changing so fast with GPS approaches as these airports couldn't afford ILS equipment. I'm guessing these airports have RNAV and not ILS? Do you know?

  • @whiteyg2455
    @whiteyg2455 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Excellent video! When importing into MSFS it doesnt pickup arrivals and departures sometimes. So you need to adjust the plan in the sim map. But that destroys the route. Have you found a way around this?

      @@NOTAM1 I have the same problem, I still have to enter the runways sids and stars, and MS2020 still picks different waypoints. Dont have this problem with Xplane

    • @kevykevTPA
      @kevykevTPA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure the waypoints are in your Navigraph plan, and then when importing them into FS, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING. The only thing you can change is your starting point on your departure runway if you like to start cold and dark in a parking spot as I do. BUT... YOU MUST USE THE DROPDOWN TO DO SO. You can zoom in and figure out which spot you want, but don't click on it, rather use the origination dropdown. (It usually says Runway.) That should avoid the problem of FS trying to reroute you.

    New sub here. Apart from the obvious pluses you've described with Navigraph, how could any aviation person not be hooked by someone who can manage to put the words 'fun' and 'NDB navigation' in the same sentence. :-))

    • @NOTAM1
      @NOTAM1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lmfao.... ok.. thats funny. Shows the power of simulation in regards to me learning NDB's. I would have never got enough flight time when I was younger to really get a good handle on them other than theory, but I could boot up fs 4 I think at the time and just pull up the instrument panel that took up 3/4 of the bottom of the screen and learn to navigate with ndb's. Became a bit of a game between friends, but yeah, anyone learning it on paper might prefer a gun to the temple. I laughed pretty hard at your comment though.

  • @tonechild5929

    Navigraph exports flight plans incorrectly, often times waypoints are ignored, and it always does high altitude instead of low.
