Probably Riften. Besides crime and, i'm assuming, the smell from the sewers, it's located in a nice place geographically, has plenty of markets, inns and niche shops. As well as close proximity to nature with fishing, hot springs, good soil and woods. The nearby villages in the hold don't seem too bad either, and it's always close Cyrodiil and Morrowind. I also heard they're reforming the Dawnguard! Vampire hunters or something. In the old fort near Riften, might consider joining up myself.
fun fact, Vermina's curse doesn't effect people that aren't originally from Dawnstar, the innkeeper specifically tells you (the player) that "outsiders" aren't affected by the nightmares
I forgot to add a note at the top that mentioned that. But either way, knowing that everyone else is awake and screaming throughout the night is bound to affect your own sleep

@@theWelshWizard For number 5 Windhem, you didn't even mention aventus aretino summoning the dark brotherhood within the city walls and the guards doing absolutely nothing about it. That at least puts it below dawnstar imo
I've noticed quite a few mods that make Whiterun look more lush and compact, as if to resemble Cyrodill or something. But I'm pretty sure Bethesda intended Whiterun to resemble Rohan from The Lord of the Rings. First time I stepped into Whiterun and explored Dragon's Reach, it seemed so obvious to me and I will only use mods that honor this. It's fine if other people prefer Whiterun to look more compact and colorful but I disagree that those kind of mods necessarily make Whiterun look "better". Either way, Whiterun feels most like home to me.
"How many of us have actually spent quality time in Morthal?" **raises hand** I like exploring the swamp, its weather splits the difference between snowy and coastal, the jarl sells me my favorite Hearthfire property AND she stuck Imperial unlike those sellouts in Dawnstar, I get to root out a vampire infestation and hang out with Lurbuck, it's got its own little mini-lake (or huge pond, if you prefer) that I could theoretically boat on, and I've added at least one resident with a mod of some kind. It's honestly only a nearby mine/smithy short of rustic perfection, for me. Sure, it's definitely no Solitude or Whiterun, but I'd absolutely rank it alongside Falkreath and Riften (albeit because I don't like Riften's interior, only its surroundings).
I've always had a liking for the Hearthfire player homes up until they released the CC packs onto the Switch a while back. Now my most favorite is Goldenhills Plantation that (after a teensy bit of ghostbusting) has loads of advantages. While yes, you still need to tediously get materials and gold especially when you're starting a new playthrough in order to upgrade the place, it's still a great starter you basically get for free. You eventually (after a little work) get two farm plots for plants and veggies you can grow for making food or potions, several bits of livestock to get milk and eggs, a stable for your latest steed... plus a bunkhouse for your farmhands and Steward to live in while you're gone. For starting up a fresh game file, just throw a stone over in Riverwood for your steward of choice (slightly faster than getting a decent husband) and every couple of days, you get the farm's proceeds of plus 1000 gold. The inside's pretty great too: both a potion and enchanting table down in the sub-basement past the storeroom, a mini armory and library directly right of the entry, a huge dining area replete with open fireplace AND a baking oven for all your replenishing foodstuff needs; then just head upstairs to the top floor study/master bedroom to horde all of the cool and legendary stuff you find on your adventures like cheap knickknacks. My only issue is how the two different data packs interact with each other over in Solstheim mucks with the assassination plot quest against Neloth, making it so you can't kill his old apprentice. This bug also blocks off the dungeon for the expanded 'find that book' quest so that's a fun way to get stuck. And for some reason, you can't be awarded Severin Manor even when you finish that quest as intended. Bugs that Bethesda's never going to fix, of course. But that's just me. Tangent over, thanks for your time.
Maybe it's nostralgia, maybe it's house location bias, but I love Falkreath. I know it has more then a few issues, but it's a gorgeous place. I always built my house there, in fact, I don't think I've ever built it in the other two locations, maybe I should try that at some point.

One thing Morthal has that you will want to stay there: Master level Conjurer Trainer. One village I tend to visit a lot is Dawnstar personally. For... Uh... Reasons. (Hail Sithis.)
Let’s not forget Soul Trap for easy Conjuration levelling 💯 Falion is also useful if you want to rid yourself of Vampirism but it’s best to catch it in its earlier stages at any given shrine
one thing about morthol is all the alchemical resources in the surending area, and some of these are not usualy sold in any good quantitys in the various alchemical shops in the game. so its a nice place for inspiering alchemysts
Markarth is my favorite just because of the Dwarven architecture and the style. In most of my modded games, I end making all cities feel like the industrial age
Riften's definitely one of my favorites. Cozy town in a really nice region. A home that's affordable, and looks nice, plus has a door to the outside. So I can come and go without being bothered by people. The stable being right outside the gate is also nice.
When it comes to choosing homes, I always like having all the commodities. Smelter, workbench, forge/anvil, tanning rack, arcane enchanter, and alchemist table nearby or close enough to merchants I can sell to. Any of the Hearthfire homes are great unless you need to sell stuff then you either need to have the summon daedra merchant from the Black Book in the DLC or have merchants nearby.
Yeah, amenities are important to me too. It still shocks me how there is no smelter in Solitude, and worse yet, no smithing facilities in a house costing 25,000 gold!
@@stevenceja4706 I usually stick with Breezehome thanks to the free smith set up next door, though the enchater tabis all the way up in Dragonsreach, thankfully one simple mod of adding a basement that hold all the commidites works VERY well AND lets you keep the children's room if necessary.
Starfield catching strays. (deservedly) also a problem that wasn't mentioned is the player home in Ravenrock isn't really 'listed' as a player home, meaning you can't send your family there :(
@@theWelshWizard Even if it gave me the option to send my family to Solstheim, I still wouldn’t. It’s too harsh and it’d suck if I get an inheritance letter after my wife got mauled by some Black Book-Driven wizard. It would be nice for rp though!
Helgen. As Bethesda screws a lot of stuff up, that is the most obvious. Why is it that Helgen is the size of a major city, yet doesn't govern anything? Did it have a Jarl? Bethesda could have created an entire questline on rebuilding the city, or at least discovering why Alduin chose it rather than Windhelm or Solitude. Or an expansion, where the city is rebuilt and fought over in the midst of the civil war?
.... I purchased this Gem from the get go, I even bought the 1and I eighth inch thick manual that I will adore until my dieing day....Thank you Welsh Wizard ❤❤❤ the sound of your voice is SO comforting to my soul. I'm not sure why that is, because I would be the last human being to become a creepy person at all.... But I love you anyways 😚 take care of yourself sir 😘
I like Morthal. Sure, it's all swamp. But it has one of my favorite jarl and a wizard that can cure vampirism. And the hearthfire house there is cozy and the weather could be worse. The place also gets much nicer once the vampires are dealt with. Falkreath is also nice. A bit drab maybe, but a comfortable area to live in. Besides that I really like Riften, probably the most colorful area in the game. Markarth is in many ways worse than Riften. The corruption is much less hidden and the local Daedra are nastier. Raven Rock indeed is in a bad position. I rather hang out with Neloth. At least we can talk wizard to wizard.
I would say there's one reason to go to winterhold besides going to the college. If you're a collector of the dragon claws, like I am, you can purchase the coral dragon claw for a measly.. I think it was like 50 gold? Even if it's only one stop going there, it's still going there once.
There are in fact 2 ways to obtain the Coral Dragon Claw. One is at Birna’s Oddments in Winterhold and the other can be found in Yngol Barrow itself (if you don’t speak to Birna first) where the claw needs to be used. So, you don’t actually have to go to Winterhold for that.
My only issue with Whiterun is that it's highly vulnerable to the fast travel spawns of high level vampires that Dawnguard creates. If you aren't prepared every time you load in, you might start losing valuable vendor NPCs like Adrianne Avenicci. I remember one of my older saves on Skyrim kept getting borked because it was just one spawn after another wiping out at least two or three NPCs every single time I needed to go there, and it was infuriating. With the other cities, the load-in spawn for the DB usually is isolated or well-guarded enough that enemy incursions don't wind up killing half the population.
I got to slightly disagree with Markarth's placement because the foresworn conspiracy/escape Cidnha Mine and House of Horrors are two of my favorite quests in the game and its so beautiful to look at & a lot to do I'd definitely rank it higher
8:50 I don’t see anyone else having remarked on it after a cursory skim, and it might be just an accent thing, but I swear it sounded like you said ash-thetic. So, either your diction gives a bit of Sean Connery (I know, you’re Welsh, he’s not, it’s not technically an *accent* thing, but ykwim; also Welsh accents are so pretty, like burbling streams), or you snuck in a 10/10 pun. Either way, it works!
Great list, but I have to disagree about Falkreath and Markarth. Falkreath is just Riverwood with delusions of grandeur and Markarth has my favorite in city house and the best city based quests that aren't faction related. Plus I like hunting the Forsworn.
I always get questioned why I choose to side with the Imperials instead of the storm cloaks. The only reason because I could never attack whiterun It's my home and it's the first place we were welcomed in. Plus the Jarl is a true leader, putting his people first.
Markarth’s layout is absolutely horrendous. I’ve played so many Skyrim playthroughs on both Xbox and Switch so I can remember where everything is pretty much. But for a first time player, Markarth can be really annoying.
I used to hate Wildhelm because of how they treated the dark elves. I then realized how much the windhelm dark elves specifically suck. They act like the grey quarter is the Warren or the Rat way. Their slaving history in morrowwind is why the argonians are kept seperate. Without the dark elves i dont think the nords have a problem with the argonians because they dont have a problem with the High Elves that have been fairly successful and in good standing with Windhelm, even though the high elves are the same race as the Thalmor. The dark elves have been there for over 50 years but can't be bothered to help the only city that has a dark elf refuge in a war. Raven Rock Dunmer are survivors, and I think they would look at the windhelm dark elves as whiney and lazy. I feel like Neloth would verbally abuse them more than any Nord if he showed up to windhelm.
only bad thing about the house in Whiterun is they make you progress some of the main questline just so you can buy it not all of my characters are doing that
But Raven Rock also has THIS going for it; it's the only place you can hire the best swordsman in all Morrowind. 😁 That's why it ranks higher for me, anyway.
I never got the reason people blame the college outright for the collapse like sure it’s suspicious to be the only building left standing but just LOOK at the building it’s probably the sturdiest looking building in all of Skyrim
I mean what city in this game isn't safe also the severen manor reward quest can bug out and you don't get the mayor to get to his house for him to reward you
People taking about racism in Windhelm My Dunmer or Argonian Stormcloaks: Ye, it was touph to earn Nords' respect, but we got itandthen some, and Ulfric isn't really that bad, now that Rolf guy, ye-no, screw him.
I prefer the console version of skyrim. Why? Because I can't access the console commands, which means I HAVE to play and explore. I use the pc version when I just want to make cool builds
Bruh, the two best houses in the game are the plot of land in Morthal and the wizard tower in Morthal. Plus, the city has some interesting things going on. It's for sure not the best city, but it should be a lot higher than 9. Same for Raven Rock, btw. Whiterun, on the other hand, is hugely overrated.
10 Winterhold (F, nothing there) 9 Dawnstar (D, bleak and underwhelming) 8 Raven Rock (C, a pain to get to but interesting) 7 Morthal (C, I’m an alchemist and I like swamps) 6 Windhelm (B, awe-inspiring but depressing and racist) 5 Solitude (B, beautiful city, but it feels like there’s somehow a lot less than there actually is if that makes sense) 4 Whiterun (A, the perfect town-period) 3 Markarth (A, I think living in an ancient dwarf city is really cool, and the reach is my close second favorite area in the game) 2 Riften (S, everything is here, it’s on the water, and honeyside is my favorite vanilla home) 1 Falkreath (S, my favorite area in the game, and if death was a lady we would know each other very intimately, and there’s a lot of graves.) Not that it matters. I just think it’s fun to make lists.
Morthal not being an immediate bottom at the list? It literally has nothing. The ONLY shop it has is an Alchemy Shop. The only big quest is about some vampires and a burned house. And it’s in a swamp. Winterhold and Dawnstar suck too, but at least you have guild locations and usable shops, like a general store and a blacksmith, along with the occasional khajiit caravan.
Winterhold is the smallest city, was obliterated during the Great Collapse, has 4 usable buildings, next to no amenities and will freeze your nutsack off. Shrek’s Swamp is a bit more bearable in my opinion
I've got Markarth at 9th because I HATE the visual aesthetic of dwemer architecture. Plus it's in the middle of nowhere. I've got Riften at 8 because everything is so run down. And can you imagine the smell? Stagnant water, fish guts, and unwashed assholes.
Skyrims cities are bland, especially compared to Oblivion, ESO and arguably even Morrowind…. I have played every TES game since Daggerfall so Iv seen most of the content TES has to offer Ps. Fun fact, like Whiterun, Solitude was supposed to be bigger than it ended up being in the final version of the game. I was supposed to have a whole other district behind the “Victoria Vichi wedding” area, but was cut due to time restraints
If you were a citizen of Skyrim, where would you choose to settle down?
Probably Riften. Besides crime and, i'm assuming, the smell from the sewers, it's located in a nice place geographically, has plenty of markets, inns and niche shops. So, either your diction gives a bit of Sean Connery (I know, you’re Welsh, he’s not, it’s not technically an *accent* thing, but ykwim; also Welsh accents are so pretty, like burbling streams), or you snuck in a 10/10 pun. Either way, it works!
I actually think Whiterun's a bit overrated but I'm glad to see Falkreath rated so high.
Great list, but I have to disagree about Falkreath and Markarth. Falkreath is just Riverwood with delusions of grandeur and Markarth has my favorite in city house and the best city based quests that aren't faction related. Plus I like hunting the Forsworn.
Thanks! I also love Riverwood - if that was a city, it would be pretty high for me.
@@theWelshWizard Riverwood is the best. You could do town ratings next.
@@Baldanders99 that’s a good one! 👍
Please rank all alchemical ingredients next
What graphics, environmental and meshes mods are used in your videos? It looks great !
Can you tell so my game looks as good plz?
Can you find the links in the description
@@theWelshWizard Thank you !
im obsessed with whiterun but it suffers from the starter city = small starter house
Whiterun is hard to argue against being number 1
I always get questioned why I choose to side with the Imperials instead of the storm cloaks.
The only reason because I could never attack whiterun
It's my home and it's the first place we were welcomed in. Plus the Jarl is a true leader, putting his people first.
If you do attack Whiterun then Jarl Balgruuf let's you know how disappointed he is in you.
@@ElliotKeaton definitely not doing that
Market is is my favorite by far. At least my uniqueness
1.Riften 2.Whiterun 3.Solitude 4.Windhelm 5.Markarth 6.Falkreath 7.Raven Rock 8.Dawnstsr 9.Morthal 10.Winterhold just thought I'd add my 2 cents lol
its funny that morthal, the only place to cure vampirism, has the vampire problem
All my homies love raven rock! its number 1 in my heart
Windhelm, always. I cant do without Capital Windhelm mod anymore
Morthal my beloved
Do you have a pet donkey?
@@theWelshWizard no😞
only bad thing about the house in Whiterun is they make you progress some of the main questline just so you can buy it not all of my characters are doing that
But Raven Rock also has THIS going for it; it's the only place you can hire the best swordsman in all Morrowind. 😁 That's why it ranks higher for me, anyway.
tbh i cant choose i like all of them!
I’m pretty sure you can buy an enchanting table for the breezehome
Can you make a video on how to get to ironbind barrow I can't find it
you need to do a mods list please i want my game to look as amazing as yours and not be over modded
Nice.
Early before 500 views 👀
I never got the reason people blame the college outright for the collapse like sure it’s suspicious to be the only building left standing but just LOOK at the building it’s probably the sturdiest looking building in all of Skyrim
For a wizard you sure put winterhold low.😊 Hope i can catch more streams but i jave been busy.
I mean what city in this game isn't safe also the severen manor reward quest can bug out and you don't get the mayor to get to his house for him to reward you
I think the game should let the players rebuild Iverstead, Winterhold and Helgen.
Windhelm isn’t the oldest city in Skyrim technically. Since Markarth was built by the Dwemer it’s older, just not it’s “modern” version of the city
Windhelm is the oldest continuously habited human settlement. Saarthal is in fact the oldest city
People taking about racism in Windhelm
My Dunmer or Argonian Stormcloaks: Ye, it was touph to earn Nords' respect, but we got itandthen some, and Ulfric isn't really that bad, now that Rolf guy, ye-no, screw him.
Where can I get your mod list
In the description - Wabbajack
Elfen ring wish it had Skyrim grit. 😂
Riften is also the only city where there is a Brothel…
Hi, Best game ever
I prefer the console version of skyrim. Why? Because I can't access the console commands, which means I HAVE to play and explore. I use the pc version when I just want to make cool builds
That’s smart. Just got to watch out for those exploits
First! 😂
Jokes aside I was watching one of your other videos and saw this in my feed and jumped right over
Too quick! :)
hello, may I know the mods you are using?
You can find them linked in the description
Bro how is Markarth below Morthal, Ravenrock and Dawnstar?
Riften number 3?
Skyrim has no cities. A Village with 3 Buildings is now a fucking town.
Winterhold, the smallest, has 4 buildings actually, but yeah, some of them are quite small
That's game limitation of 2011 for you
@@TheDragonborn97 No, its because of the shitty 512MB RAM Consoles. It has nothing to do with 2011. The Engine can handle way more, as Mods showed.
@@Andarus I was specifically speaking about console limitations of 2011 in fact
No alchemist in Solitiude as well.
What are your favorite mods in Skyrim?
Bruh, the two best houses in the game are the plot of land in Morthal and the wizard tower in Morthal. Plus, the city has some interesting things going on. It's for sure not the best city, but it should be a lot higher than 9.
Same for Raven Rock, btw. Whiterun, on the other hand, is hugely overrated.
10 Winterhold (F, nothing there)
9 Dawnstar (D, bleak and underwhelming)
8 Raven Rock (C, a pain to get to but interesting)
7 Morthal (C, I’m an alchemist and I like swamps)
6 Windhelm (B, awe-inspiring but depressing and racist)
5 Solitude (B, beautiful city, but it feels like there’s somehow a lot less than there actually is if that makes sense)
4 Whiterun (A, the perfect town-period)
3 Markarth (A, I think living in an ancient dwarf city is really cool, and the reach is my close second favorite area in the game)
2 Riften (S, everything is here, it’s on the water, and honeyside is my favorite vanilla home)
1 Falkreath (S, my favorite area in the game, and if death was a lady we would know each other very intimately, and there’s a lot of graves.)
Not that it matters. I just think it’s fun to make lists.
Meh I'd put dawnstar below Ravenrock as they both are practically the same it's just one looks more interesting
I have played every TES game since Daggerfall so Iv seen most of the content TES has to offer
Ps. Fun fact, like Whiterun, Solitude was supposed to be bigger than it ended up being in the final version of the game. I was supposed to have a whole other district behind the “Victoria Vichi wedding” area, but was cut due to time restraints
