Marvin Gaye was a visionary. This song is still so relevant today.

This song really defines Marvin Gaye's career and is part of the iconic soundtrack to the 1970's. The entire album is a masterpiece of social commentary and every song is worth a listen. We are particularly focused on the environment today so take a listen to "Mercy, Mercy Me (the Ecology)" which speaks to how we were polluting our air and water even back then.

Great song & singer. Sadly the song is still very relevant in 2023...we seem to backstep on the steps we take forward but Marvin is telling it like it is.

We were so incredibly divided with the Viet Nam War, Civil Rights movement, The Generation Gap and so much more when he came out with this...amazing how his words ring so true to this day.

The 60's were full of chaos and confusion and FEAR. Marvin was SO smooth and his voice so appealing that he drew a lot of us white folks in and made us think about "what's going on ". If you haven't played it already, my favorite is his duet with Tammy Terrell "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing". Much love and all success to you guys. I love watching you. It gives me hope for the future of this country, and there hasn't been a lot of people out there who make me hopeful. Sorry to run on so long, and THANK YOU.

@@karenkatona3065 I remember buying the album when it was first released in 1971 I was 20 and I remember it like yesterday. I do agree that the words do indeed ring true today and I also LOVE "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" Their voices jelled.. Thx twins keep listening..

We certainly miss this prophetic hero. This is like an anthem. We needed him here longer from oldies like "River Deep, Mountain High" with Tammi Tyrell he is missed. Another commenter reminds me that I was 20 when this was a hit . Great reaction, more please! ❤️

It’s said Barry Gordy, Jr., didn’t want Marvin to make this album, he thought the song topics were too controversial. Marvin insisted, got it made and the result was this masterpiece.
Couple of other Marvin songs to check out “Chained” and “California Soul” with Tammi Terrell.
Really enjoy your reactions to all types of music. You help expand my music appreciation too.

"What's Going On" is the coolest, smoothest yet most relevant and important song! Marvin Gaye created this masterpiece and released it in 1971. I was only 9; so, I liked the song but cherished it when I got a little older and completely understood the lyrics. Great choice. Great reaction!

Hi Tim and Fred. Great to see you do a reaction to this song. It's a classic masterpiece. I didn't find out until I was older that this was actually a protest song about civil rights. The whole album this is on is too just about. But the way he sings it doesn't seem that way. He was so masterful. One of my favorites. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hey Twins it's so good to see you! I'm glad you listened Marvin Gaye. He was a top singer/writer/producer at Motown. This song is so relevant today because the same issues we're facing today was happening in the '60's and '70's. He was a visionary of his time. He bumped heads with Berry Gordy the president of Motown because Mr. Gordy felt he was being too militant and was concerned about the Motown brand. Marvin went ahead and did his thing and we all have benefitted from it, and so did Motown. He put out some awesome music!

Just a little background on this song & album, Gaye had to fight with Barry Gordy to make this album because it was a protest album about the Vietnam war & inner city plight. Gordy didn’t want to get political but Gaye felt it was too important of a message to ignore.

Saw him in concert at the Forum in Inglewood in summer of 1973, I had just graduated from high school. What's Going On almost didn't get released. The studio didn't want him to sing songs about politics or the reality of what was going on at the time. The studio execs didn't think anyone would like accept this type of song. It was an immediate hit and he followed it up with a few other related songs. Marvin and Al Green are my all time favorite artists
