- Learn how to do ROLL CANCEL VECTORING in my latest TUTORIAL for Super Mario Odyssey!
With this crazy jump technique, no gap is too far for Mario!
Roll Cancel Vectoring (Roll-Cancel Vector) is an advanced, but useful trick to learn in SMO. Not only does it look cool, but it can help Mario make super long and difficult jumps. Whether you use it to gather moons or to do awesome trick jumps is up to you! It is most commonly used to do the huge impossible jump in Bowser's Kingdom from the floating island in the sky!
To pull this advanced move off, I recommend finding a nice flat area to practice. Almost any kingdom will do, but I find it easy to practice in Bowser's Kingdom because you can quickly teleport and try the impossible jump afterwards. To get things started, jump with A or B and then do a ground-pound with ZL or ZR. Immediately after hitting the ground, start rolling by hitting X and then quickly slide your thumb down and hit Y and then B all in succession. If you do it correctly, Mario will start rolling and then immediately cancel the roll by throwing Cappy. If you practice this and get consistent enough, you can try doing it on ledges to cross some huge gaps. The best part about this trick is that Mario can still throw and bounce off of Cappy while in the air. Combining these 2 tricks in one combo can provide an insanely long jump! The best place to test this trick is the "impossible jump" in Bowser's Kingdom from the floating island in the sky to the building off in the distance. Hopefully this walkthrough helps you do this trick yourselves and if you are having any troubles, just let me know and I will try to help as best as I can!
If you can't do this trick after tons of practice, don't be too bummed out. The jump from the island in the sky is possible with a simple roll off the edge and some Cappy jumps when you get close to the building!

How do you throw cappy to cancel the roll for me it just stops mario
3 years later and this tutorial still worked great. The "glide your fingers across x, y and b" part is what really nailed my understanding of how to preform this and finally got that waterfall clip at cascade after an hour of scrolling clip tutorial videos. Great explanation! Thanks!

Tip: wait a bit after landing before doing the trick. You will do the weird thing with cappy if you throw immediately, but if you wait a bit you will roll.
I completed the impossible bowsers jump by facing 45 degrees to the left of the building, then did a twirl ground pound roll and than I made it

For some reason I found that pressing X Y and B all at the exact same time with my thumb worked
Maybe you hit X, Y, B in that order but it felt like you hit them all at once?

Amazing tips. It only took me 10 tries to get my first success. I found it easier with my eyes closed focusing on hitting X Y B as soon as I felt the vibration from the pound. Now to practice until I can do it moderately consistently.

The return of Typfoon has finally happened! Great tutorial dude, very interesting tech which I didn't know how to do. As for future tutorial video ideas, I have two jumps in mind which I would be interested in seeing how to do: the lake kingdom skip and the luncheon kingdom balloon world spot that DGR used. Can't wait for future videos my man. :)

Yeah, I definitely recommend just rolling off the cliff. Using the roll cancel is pretty useful for making sharp turns without losing any forward momentum, but using it as a legit long jump tech... I dunno man. Awesome guide though!
Yeah haha, I rarely use the roll cancel vectoring for anything. A cappy roll jump or just rolling off the edge usually works well for most jumps :P
Roll cancel vectors are mostly used in speedruns for quickly shifting direction at full speed
They’re the longest jumps in the game though.

Pretty sure you are conflating two different things here and I didn't see anyone comment about it: Instant roll cancelling and vectoring. From my understanding instant roll cancel is when you do the ground/spin pound into roll and cancel it with a cap throw button and jump, and vectoring is when you move diagonally in the air, which preserves Mario's momentum much more than moving straight.

I know this is an old video but I can't seem to get this to work and I need it to for luigi's balloon world.

I can't do it when i try to mario just Throws cappy at the ground instead of rolling and sometimes it does work but when i try to do any clip like the it clip mario just hits his head

Why does mario throw cappy vertically if im trying to roll?
Does the air-spin (pressing jump right after bouncing off Cappy) help with jumps? I just feel like it kills your momentum.
It actually helps Mario stay in the air a bit longer and also makes him go a bit further as well. I usually use it near the end of the jump when Mario's momentum has already died down
Or on joycons just press all the buttons down, and do a quarter-circle on the stick.

Personally I find it easier to do a combo of Y+Y+B in rapid succession to cancel the roll and get the momentum rather than gliding my fingers to 3 different buttons

ATTENTION! if you are trying to do this jump from more than one roll, MAKE SURE YOU PRESS XYB AT THE SAME TIME AS THE GOLDEN ROLL THING POPS UP! if you don’t, pressing x+y will just cause you to roll even more.
