Richard Herring is the by far the biggest underachiever in British Comedy today. It is a crime that he is not regularly on TV, considering the low standards of many other comedians who regularly (dis)grace or screens. I love Stewart Lee, but Richard Herring is also deserving of the career resurrection Stew is currently enjoying. Richard's style, arguably, has more mainstream appeal too. Hilarious. I like how Richard makes reference to "the following gnat's chuff routine" before their conversation leads into it. Then he feeds Stew his "3 hours" line before reacting with over-dramatic surprise when Stew says it.
It isn't a question of underachievement. televison comedy is a factory process - those chosen to perform generally end up with the same sort of material, lots of it written for them. Richard Herring's style doesn't translate in the same way. This man is a comedy king, who always has a new show in time for Edinburgh each year.
