Nissan LEAF 62kwh Battery Swap

  • In this video, we swap a "new" 62kwh battery into a 2012 Nissan LEAF.
    When this car first arrived at our shop, it had a highly degraded battery with only 6 capacity bars remaining (it would only go about 30-35mi on a charge). We were able to swap in this new 62kwh battery, and give the car a new lease on life with over 220 miles of range. That's triple what it's range would have been when new in 2012, and 6x what it would do when it first arrived here!
    We learned a lot throughout the process of doing this swap, and we look forward to doing more swaps like it in the future! While it is possible to swap this battery into a 2011-2012 LEAF, it is a much better idea to do the swap using a 2013 or newer LEAF, as they share more hardware in common which makes things work a lot better.
    If you are interested in upgrading the battery in your Nissan LEAF, or have any other EV repair questions, feel free to get in touch with us here at QC Charge.

      The problem with the Leaf is that they have no cooling system for the battery, it's just cooled by ambient air. Because of this, they can get very hot and degrade very fast. They are restricted to one DC Fast Charge per day, too.

    The Nissan dealership near me has offered to install a 40kWh battery for US$12,400. I may have to wait for the battery to get shipped, but the alternative?
    Some guy in Dallas offered to sell me a 62 kWh battery for $16K, and then $1K for the adapter rails, $400 for a "Dala" CAN bridge, and another $3K for installation, he doesn't install the new rear springs (for a battery that weight half again as much? Are you nuts? They're $100 from Nissan, and you can do it with a screwdriver!) and that's before I have to rent a tow rig to get it there...and no warranty. That's north of $21K, and we only paid $26K for the car when we bought it new from Nissan.
    It's a 2011 with 80K miles, SOH about 70% (9 bars). I can still go more than 70 miles when fully charged.

    Did anyone notice how clean the underside of this car was after nearly a decade on the road? These cars don't get filthy or age like gasoline vehicles do. My 2015 is only 6 years old and I live in a state with slushy nasty winters and yet the car is nearly this clean. Amazing ultra dependable little machines. I agree however, with the need to upgrade the 24kWh packs. These were just too small and required recharging far more often than a larger battery would. Recharging everyday, and sometimes two or three times a day, quickly used up the available charge cycles and accelerated the degradation. My wife's newer 2019 has the 62 kWh pack and only needs to be plugged in once a week. With over 200 miles of range and with at least 1000 charge cycles we should easily cover 200,000 miles before seeing significant battery degradation. I'd consider this upgrade service offered by QC Charge if I wasn't living on the opposite coast. Maybe these guys will offer a transportation service soon😃

    My Honda CRZ has a ~900WH battery.
    It'd be awesome to add a 96v 28kwh battery pack above the factory battery, and drive each rear wheel with a 20kw motor.
    It would be cool to just swap the old pack out for a custom larger pack that takes up the old space and raises the load floor of the trunk, but the factory system is not very efficient, requiring the engine to be running for the motor to work, and i think the motor has to run through the CVT instead of being direct drive.

    Purchased my 2012 Nissan Leaf 6 years ago and I LOVE this car with the exception of the range, especially since the battery has degraded. I now get (shows) 60 miles on a full charge without ECO mode and no fan (AC or heat) running. If I could put a 62kwh battery and have mine get 200+ miles on a charge I would be so happy. How do I get this done? Is there someone remotely close to me that can do it?

    The battery isn't being actively cooled and the price of $9500 for the battery and $2500 to replace it means $12,000. That amount of money is a fair amount of money that can go towards a new electric car with greater range and active cooling systems.

      @@en3rgy187 I'm thinking the same thing. I want more range from my existing Leaf. I only paid $18K for my 2013 Leaf new. New EVs are $40K minimum. $12K for 62kw upgrade doesn't seem that bad.. I'd like brand new cells for that price however..

    • @QCCHARGE
      @QCCHARGE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The total cost is dependent on the cost of the battery itself. The way we do it here, is the customer buys the battery separately (we are willing to help source it, but ultimately the customer makes the purchase), then our cost for the installation is ~$2,500.
      The communication module that we use does the pairing with the car (hence why it needs to be programmed while the old battery is still in place).

      Unfortunately this is a limitation of putting the large (62kwh) battery into a 2011 or 2012 LEAF. In a 2013 or newer, the instrumentation should work like normal, but the older ones basically were never designed to work with this much capacity. The car is fully functional, but it just won't really show the correct SOC on the dash.
      A 40kwh battery on the other hand could be swapped in and work with no issues in any LEAF (2011-2017).

    • @QCCHARGE
      @QCCHARGE  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 2nd generation Volt (2016-2019) used an 18.4kWh battery, so that would be a slight upgrade. I'm not sure if that's been done before or not, so it may or may not be possible to swap one in...
      It's pretty unlikely that an aftermarket solution for a larger battery will come to market for the Volt, but anything can happen.

    • @danwat1234
      @danwat1234 ปีที่แล้ว

      @QC CHARGE that would be ideal, the open source community has a group on Facebook, trying 2 unlock the firmware then it ... may be possible not sure if a 2nd gen would match up!. There has been discussion of buying pouch cells of the right dimensions from Alibaba then doing QC from those.
      Luckily the packs seems to hold up well. Increased internal resistance is main issue, have to keep at 5 miles range in hold mode so it doesn't dip too much and peg at 290V where it throttles power to keep it there. 286K miles on my 2013, but I live in a coolish climate Portland Or area so I guess that evens things out

    • @QCCHARGE

      There is a 40mm (~1.6") reduction in ground clearance due to the required spacers. Alternatively a 40kWh battery can be installed with no penalty to ground clearance.
