I'm talking about her outright ruining my personal space, and acting like it wasn't a big deal. For context, I live alone in a small but cozy apartment in Pittsburgh. It's not a palace, but I've made it into a home I'm proud of. Everything has its place, and I like it that way. I work part time from home as a writer, so having a workspace that works for me is important.
My desk is the centerpiece of my setup. It's small, sure, but it's solid walnut with a beautiful grain. I found it at an estate sale a couple of years ago and spent days sanding, staining, and sealing it myself. It's functional, stylish, and most importantly, it fits perfectly in my living room. Enter Vivian.
Vivian and I grew up together. She's not a bad person, but she's, a lot. She's got opinions on everything and feels the need to share them constantly. She likes to call it being, honest, but the rest of us call it being rude. Whenever she visits, I brace myself because I know she's going to nitpick something.
It's just her way. This particular incident started on a Sunday afternoon. I was working on an article when Vivian texted, saying she was in the neighborhood and wanted to stop by. She didn't even wait for me to respond before showing up at my door. Typical Vivian. I opened the door, and there she was, holding a box of random trinkets she was trying to sell online.

The ink bottle with the loose lid somehow didn’t spill in her bag, but spilt as soon as it rolled out onto the desk. Bloody unlucky that.

10:00 Mom: Family is more important than some silly furniture
OP: Great, then YOU, Mom, are paying me $ 375 for the repairs of a walnut desk she despised and ruined? I don't care who pays.

At the end: OP spent $ 375 on repairs. After a while she will feel sorry for Vi and call her for a repeat performance because she's FAMILEEEEEE! LOL

Sounds like Vivian wanted the desk for herself! Maybe she thought she could sell it & make lots of money.
That would be the last time Vivian would be allowed my home.

If she spent hours sealing this desk how could a spill stain the wood ? Makes no sense ,if it's sealed then the ink can't possibly get to the wood.

You have to put more than 1 layer of stain on the wood. And at the end the story teller did say the desk was not finished which means the wood was not fully protected. So yes the ink can get through to the wood

I restore furniture for a living for 40 years... You're both right. What I can't see is the repair work for $375 .

@jeffjames4064 I have a strange feeling more was done to the desk for that much in cost that wasn't said. And also depending on the type of wood I do remember my granddad when he worked in the workshop till from the age of 15 till a month before he died he was 87

OP is an adult. Time to separate "cousin" who deserves at least token ack FROM the actual AH she really is. Just discourage her from visiting?
If Vi isn't allowed in OP's space, she can't spoil it

For all of these kinds of stories, when "family is more important..." crap starts, the op should immediately cut off the speaker by saying "Yes! Family, me, is more important than the money they need to spend making things right. Glad you agree with me!" Then keep turning the convo back to the fact that they, op, IS family. Questioning why the perpetrator would let owing money destroy family harmony. There's no argument that can win that point.

There's a system called "small claims court" that's used when someone tries to cheat you. You should try it.

That was my first thought too. That and if the lid wasn't on tight, why didn't it spill in Vivian's purse?
