    Well done, I love the warm soulful sound of the Tenor, which I am also learning to play. To me it's like the cello of the recorder family.

      Just FYI, there are bass recorders, great bass recorders and even lower ones. I do currently own a tenor but I am a kid and sometines I struggle to reach the G hole.

    Well done.The recorder is a great 'return to music' instrument and your video was great....I'd love to hear an update.😊I played the soprano when I was in primary school (UK) 50 years ago. and like you I have now bought all three... starting from scratch on the alto and loving it. I found the tenor I bought a bit too big for my hands so I will probably trade in for a smaller one
    ...or one with keys. I picked up the soprano again really quickly so if anybody's giving the recorder a thought...go for it!

    Just the video I was looking for. For somebody trying to make it through this lonely year alone I have been trying new hobbies. So far I've learned mixology, painting, and I'm 3 weeks in learning Klingon (I don't even watch Star Trek 🤷‍♀️). I've been trying to think of a musical instrument and decided on the recorder but wanted to hear the 3 together. I get the purpose of the soprano but it's a little high pitched 'screechy' for me. I love the sound of the tenor and alto. I'll probably buy all 3. You're doing quite well. I love the look on your face prior to transitioning into the higher register 😁

      Thanks! I feel that learning the recorder has been a great use of my time this year. While the tenor is probably my favorite tone, it's more difficult to play fast without causing overtones/breaking notes. I think purchasing all three is a good idea because they each have their advantages with different songs. For the soprano, I like to find tin whistle tab music (which there is plenty of online, I really like the TH-camr called CutiePie) and it's pretty easy to translate the tin whistle notes to recorder: D, E, F#, G, A, B, C. The soprano recorder sounds very similar to a tin whistle.

    Pretty good for a newbie. I've been playing recorders for 40 years and still hit duff high notes! The Alto is definitely the best sounding of the three but the lack of "simple" music is a pain, and I often end up playing up the octave. However it is worth continuing to learn the F fingering, although confusing at first, you will learn to jump between the C and F instruments easily and a lot of Baroque music is written for the Alto.
    Sarah Jeffery/Team recorder on TH-cam is a great source of everything nerdy about recorder playing.
    I been learning to play the flute during lockdown....what was that about running out of breath?

  • @Naucano
    @Naucano 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Hold your recorders higher and blow more straight in it. At first this will seem harder, but actually it makes it easier. Your higher notes will go easier also, alternativately you can bend your head a bit down. the trick is to blow straight in it, just a tip ... and another tip: "high" or more accurate "overblown" notes are not "difficult", we just want to force them out of the recorder and tighten up our mouth, which is exactly the opposit of what one should do ... we all made that "mistake"

    I prefer playing the alto compared to the soprano because I have big hands. You can use the same sheet music and fingering for your alto and your soprano. When you use soprano sheet music and fingering on an alto recorder, you'll just hear the key of F instead of the key of C which is no big deal at all. 99% would not even notice unless they have perfect pitch which is rare. Buying a tenor recorder in this situation is really not necessary unless you want to play a tenor recorder.

      Thanks! Unfortunately I haven't really continued playing over the past year... just the usual excuses of being too busy with work and family, but I really need to get back to playing the recorder. Enough with the excuses! lol. I would say that the soprano is loudest, just because of its high-pitched sound. The tenor is quieter in my opinion, with its lower tones - it will be the one I will start practicing with again, because I've moved into an apartment and don't want to annoy my neighbors.

      @@kevin6596 Thanks, Kevin. That's helpful to know - and yeah, I hear you on the annoying the neighbours thing! I've found some tricks on TH-cam you can do to mute the sound though and even a little thing you can buy called a muteflute (or something like that) which dampens the sound right down, but I think you're right about the soprano - it's the shrillness that causes the most potential upset! Congratulations on your progress, Kevin! I too have only recently become interested in learning recorder. I have a couple of sopranos, at least two altos, and three tenors. Now I have learned of another type that is somewhere between the alto and the tenor. It's called a "voice flute" (Yes, it's a recorder), but the only ones I have found are hand made and very expensive -- so... I believe I shall wait on making such an costly investment in my new found hobby until I've proven to myself that I have gained enough musical skill to justify the purchase. ;) Thank you for the informative video. Yeah, the tenor is pretty sensitive to overtones... but I've learned to start loving it and be gentle, lol. I would say the alto is the most versatile. You can play fast, but it's not super high pitched, either. I've been working most with the soprano and tenor because they are both in the key of C, but the alto is in key of F. I figure it's best to learn the fingerings before I start learning to transpose for alto.

      And those whistle notes you speak of... Are they translated as the highest octave of the recorder ? (Which you play by covering different and lesser holes) Or are they those accidental whistle notes I hit when I dont blow the recorder right?

      Well, I've never actually played flute, but I have tried a couple times and it was difficult to get a proper sound out of it, lol. I imagine the flute would be more difficult to get the hang of in the beginning, but once you feel proficient in scales and comfortable with the instrument, I think any instrument can become as difficult... since we are always students just trying to improve and stretch our limits everyday.

    • @Elflamencojuan
      @Elflamencojuan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having played both, I can tell you that the flute is easier once you have acquired your embouchure (the lip shape needed to get a tone from blow across the hole in the head of the flute). The reason for it being easier is simply that you have lids to cover the holes so when you press the key or lid, it seals the hole and you have the note instantly. It is harder to overblow the flute because of its larger diameter so it is more forgiving. With recorder, it is slightly easier to get the embouchure but there are no lids over the holes (except on the lower two for the tenor). Beginners tend to struggle to cover the holes and also tend to overblow creating "cracked" notes. But whilst the flute is overall easier, it's lids mean it is far less controllable and it is not really possible to bend notes like you hear in Celtic and Indian music. The controllability (of keyless recorders) makes it my preferred woodwind instrument.

      @@kevin6596 At one point, you say "I prefer this one as far as tone." But then, you don't identify it by name. Which is it?
      So I did have some difficulty identifying them as your video proceeds because you have them laid in a pile, rather sorted in any order to make it clear which you are playing at any instance.
      Also, I bought a tenor because somebody else said tenor is their favorite. But tenor is so long that it hurts my wrists and fingers.
      I dislike like ones that are too high-pitched so maybe I will try an Alto since a Tenor gives discomfort.
