  • BBC Television sold off their Outside Broadcast arm and staff to SiS in 2007. SiS were a horse racing broadcaster and thought they knew how to run a large Outside Broadcasting outfit. However, lost major OB events like the Grand National to other companies over several years, culminating with the loss of Wimbledon, meant SiS closed the OB side, except for Comms, in early 2014.
Here we see the BBC trucks repainted in SiS blue, and ex-BBC staff, along with a couple of freelancers, at Anfield in 2012. There will be ten cameras for this match, although on some normal matches this could be sixteen.
In this video camera boxes can be seen under the main scanner to protect them from rain. The camera van that brought those boxes, as well as sound and VT equipment. Cables from the scanner to wall boxes. Anfield is one of many football grounds in the UK that have permanent cables installed throughout the ground to sound and camera positions, so all that is needed is for the scanner to be connected to the local wall box.
Inside the scanner we firstly see the Sound booth. Then, one of the cameraman, Barry Gregory, is sat at a remote op position. At Anfield there are two remote cameras, both above each 18 yard line, that are remotely operated either from this position in VT, or possibly the gallery or sometimes unfortuately from a cold cameravan.
Next there is the VT section, although video tape has not been used for some years, it's now hard drives. Then there is the gallery from where the cameras are directed and cut to.
Finally we move into the ground to behind the left-hand goal and camera eight, the camera that I was operating on this match. It's the younger brother of a Sony BVP-950 Hi Def professional camera. It has a 20:1 lens, although an extender can be flipped in to provide 40:1. And let it be known that no professional TV camera has auto-focus. In fact the focus and zoom controls can be seen attached to the pan and tilt head.

Great stuff, I was at this match! I often have a nosy at the camera covering the Kop goal.

+Matthew Callon ..... :) The part where the OB vehicles are parked is now being built on for the new stand, after demolishing a row of derelict terraced houses.
