Last BBC Look NorthWest from Studio N, Piccadilly - tribute to transmissions from the building

- The last transmission of Look NorthWest from Studio N, Piccadilly, Manchester in 1981. The clip shown here is more a tribute to the building, hosting both radio from the 1920s and television from the 1950s, and its hosts and its programmes.
The idea of this particular transmission was that the tribute should be shown and then Stuart should say a fond farewell. However, the news, read by John Mundy, overran, accidentally or deliberately? So this meant that Stuart could not say his final farewell, and the studio had to opt back to Nationwide, a second or so late. Stuart was fuming, and, I must say, devastated.
The clip also brielfy shows the new studio for Look NorthWest - Studio B in New Broadcasting House, Oxford Road, Manchester. Ironically the programme, as NorthWest Tonight, from late 2011 is now broadcast from the Media Centre in Salford Quays and New Broadcasting House, built in 1975, now up for sale. Anyone want a broadcasting centre? It includes an OB yard! EDIT! As of November 2012 NBH haws been razed to the ground and all that is left of the building and studio you see is dust.
The first shot in the then new Studio B shows senior cameraman Tony Taylor R.I.P., operating the furthest camera, and myself, nearest, both exploring lens angles for the new set. Then, in the gallery we see Richard Howell right, engineer, and John Mundy, presenter. The gallery was actually above and overlooking the studio through a large glassed area, not in the bowels of the earth.... To the right of the gallery was autocue and the tele-slide machine, and to the left was the large sound cubicle. VT and telecine were a corridor away.
Studio B was, of course, very modern and through its years hosted many regional and national programmes, including Breakfast TV. - บันเทิง

In view of what we now know, I think it was fated that Hall wouldn't get to say his last 'fond farewell', it would've spoilt the end of a lovely piece by Debbie Davies.

Oh yes, we worked together a lot - we were on the same crew for a number of years. Your dad was the number two, I was the number three and Keith Bradshaw was the number four. I was the one who got him interested in ham radio, from then on at work he couldn't talk about anything else! Chuckle. He was quite a character, he spoke his mind which I liked. And an excellent cameraman having come from Telly Centre (and before that Ally Pally?).
Yes it was about that time that Tony retired. He moved to N.Wales, Conway area I think, but passed away about three years ago?

Thanks for posting, fascinating. The film drama shown 'From The Roots Came The Rapper' looks interesting, I can't find any other reference apart from the Joe Tex recording. Do you have more information?

Fascinating and historically very interesting. Just one thing, what does txms stand for?
Txms is used as shorthand in the industry for the word transmissions. Underneath the Transmission monitor in a studio, showing the output of the studio, will be a marker saying TX. I'll change it in the title as it is a bit confusing....

Could you please tell me you mention Tony Taylor in the information, is this the same Tony Taylor that retired in 1988?
I'm Andy, Tonys son, we did indeed move to Conwy, North Wales in 1988. Dad passed away in December 2000. I have been trawling the internet in the hope of finding some footage of him, without much luck to be honest. Did you work with Tony regularly?

Sorry, no. It was all razed to the ground about two or three years ago. There are some pictures of it being pulled down somewhere.
