      There were several of these JD/Cummins up power outfits around back in the late 60s. I believe Kinzenbaugh was building them. 555 Cummins in a 4020 PS in my neighborhood.

      DICK HOUSE I thought Kinzie put Detroits in the 5020s, usually 6Vs. Later, he put Cummins in the 84/8630s and 40s. They caught on so well that Deere did it themselves. But evidently, you can put whatever you can fit into them. The drive train was up to the task.

    My neighbor bought a brand NEW 5020 the fall of 1970, never put it in the field, rather put it directly in the shop and repowered it with a Detroit 318 horsepower 8V71 series.

      I ran a 5020 with the JD engine, but with the upgraded fuel pump. That thing was like a cat dozer with wheels. Torque for days.

    We had one of those, and it was screamingly, painfully loud to operate! Even sound-damping earmuffs weren't enough to really stop the din, and when you're cultivating thousands of acres, that's a lot of din to sit through. Non-air cabs, this was before the wonderful glory of a/c. Me, I much preferred operating the 4620 JD, same power but so much quieter.

    I always wondered if it hurts a hot engine when you tow it down the road when the pipes are turned forward and direct air right down into the engine?

    • @TheeAmericanDream
      @TheeAmericanDream  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When using heavy equipment, you always want it to cool before you shut it down.. meaning let it idle for a few minutes before turning off...

    • @ToddKing
      @ToddKing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd never want to do that on a turbo engine as that air can spin the turbo. And since there is no lubrication you can burn them up. And you don't need exhaust tips turned forward for this to be an issue. The air movement can cause high and low pressure areas that can spin the turbo forward or backwards. There are guys who let their equipment run while on the trailer to avoid this.

    That's not a stock engine. The original 5020 was a lumbering beast that was underpowered and overweight. I loved it but without the aftermarket turbo it was just a lumbering beast.

    WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE PUT A CUMMINS NINE -O-NOTHING IN ANYTHING HE CARED ABOUT? PERHAPS THE SECOND WORSE ENGINE CUMMINS EVER DESIGNED.

    • @stevepell7403
      @stevepell7403 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Being that a 903 cummins engine was probably one of cummins most reliable engines do you wish to substantiate your comment or was it just a simple case of engaging your mouth prior to engaging your BRAIN

    • @Colt-tf6xf
      @Colt-tf6xf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve Pell you must be joking on being reliable, cummins made a few good motors, but the nine O nothing was definitely not one of them.

    • @Colt-tf6xf
      @Colt-tf6xf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve Pro btw, it is really hard to find a used one because the U.S. Navy bought up all they could find for boat anchors.

      @@Colt-tf6xf powering landing craft and PT boats.....anchors sit forward. 900 versatile and 935 versatile operated for years no problems whatsoever. I have ran Cats and Detroits, Cummins all have issues to some extent. My experiences do not match the hyperbolic commentary here.

    • @Colt-tf6xf
      @Colt-tf6xf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chasefreedom5178 dear sir, I believe what you say about being reliable in the implements you used them in, your application would be a good use of many engines prone to problems that do not seem to hold up on over the road use, perhaps even the big Allis Chalmers of the 70s. You very likely use it as a stationary engine with fairly constant load and somewhat steady RPM. The 903 had a very wide range to operate in with trucks, 1200 to 2700 with factory settings, as high as 3700 with driver adjustment and they did not hold up to the abuse very well at all. Jake Brakes also contributed to many failures too, as the high RPMs took a toll on Tha cranks, heads, and sometimes turbos. The original concept of the design was to compete with the 8v71 as a low weight 300hp application in a short cabover or conventional used by most of the freight companies of the day due to 55ft or less length limits imposed by the states then, and on paper it was probably better, it was so easy to change the manual governor on both engines after they left the shop and replace the original setting after it blew up that the practice sort of ushered in the computer control and recording technology we have today. I am not aware of any electronic 903s now, but there are electronic K models, that's a horse. I know this was a long reply that you didn't really ask for, but I believed your statement and merely wished to explain a little bit why the 903 got such a bad reputation, it didn't help them very much back in the day that Cummins warranty was extremely poor on nearly everything they sold, but that's another story, have a good day sir.

  • @benduffin5727
    @benduffin5727 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am disgusted, why would you ever change the stock engine for a shitty gutless 903 Cummins, for the amount of videos and pictures I’ve seen with 5020’s running with v8 engines makes me wonder if I’m the only one out there that still has a 5020 that still has the 8.7L V6 engine that doesn’t have a turbo on it, I hope to one day put a turbo on it, It has a little over 3500 hours on it with a after market cab and a ezee on 110 e loader.
