  • Finally I connected the hydraulics of the loader and was so happy about it! However, the first tests made me pretty nervous, because it turned out that I made a lot of mistakes… In general, you’d better see how it was 😉

Just a tip. When you build the safety lap bar. Make it so your forearm can support your body from rocking forward and backward. That will make it a lot easier to operate smoothly. I have seen rookies look like they were operating a bucking bronco, until they learned to steady them selfs with their forearms on the safety bar.

It’s understandable why it’s been a while since you posted another video. When you take-on such a big project like this, it’s hard to keep working on it, when you have other contract jobs that you need to do to pay the bills and pay for the materials you need to do the contract jobs and pay for the materials you need to work on your own project. That’s the life of a small business owner. I used to be an auto mechanic and a welder/fabricator, so I’ve been there, where you’re at. Take your time and don’t rush things. That’s when problems develop. It’s coming together nicely.

Never get disappointed when you are fabricating anything especially a skid loader! When I worked for Caterpillar they would send field follow machines out of the new models as test pieces, they wanted them ran in real world conditions by real operators. You would be amazed at the issues we would find and they had 100's of people designing and building these machines only for them to have some very simple flaws that get over looked. I think your doing an amazing job!! Never ever get discouraged, somtimes just walk away for a bit and then attack it agian! Great work!!!

I suggest you use safety valves on the cylinders if you are lifting and possibly subsequently an oil cooler on the return if your tank does not have enough cooling capacity.
Also add a small pressure tap on the main lines and adjust your pressure valve correctly so as not to stall your engine.

As a HEO (Heavy Equipment Operator) you will get a feel for it the more you drive it. A little bit of advice, when operating it, it's all about the feel, I find that using your fingers more than your hands, of course you have to grip it to move the skidsteer but when using the bucket, a gentle touch will make it so much easier for you down the road

I would suggest making sure that your hydraulic lines in the cab are covered in case they burst. If you enclose the engine compartment make sure there are fans since the engine looks to be air cooled. A roof would be wise also. Good job.

From someone that built a fairly large buggie from scratch at the age of 18 a few years back, I am delighted that you are documenting this project. I am really looking forward to seeing the completed machine. I think a pink and black colour scheme and 'Lucia's Loader' on the side somewhere would go very well! I am happily open to correction on this thought from a hydraulic tech, A high-pressure relief valve or a bypass valve in the right place would stop the engine from stalling when the pressure is too much. Just be careful that the valve doesn't cause all the pressure to drop (i.e the boom dropping down if the valve were to s open and stay open)

Your fabrication skill set is talented and amazing on this project.
Yes for every fabrication there are sometimes setbacks and disappointments which is a normal thing.
Stepping away from it always helps on problem solving and looking at it again to see what has happened and to correct it.
You made a huge progress to get all the controls to work as they should on a skid steer.
Now comes all the little things like you said the cage for one.
A remote starting switch and engine speed controller to install in the cab/cage
Dont forget adding/subtracting the weights that will be needed to keep the skid steer balanced empty/fully loaded.
I had that happen to me when I removed the bucket and too much weight was on the rear of the skid steer causing to tip backwards.
Great job and cannot wait to see how the whole plan comes together and you put the skid steer to work moving some dirt around.
Great job well done, and hopefully you have inspired other girls/women that there is nothing you can tackle while getting you hands dirty and the mind working.

"I love seeing a woman that can use her head ." That sounds very much like you consider women stupid, in general. Any woman that work full time, then handles most of the household stuff and takes care of several kids will be forced to use their head quite a bit. 🙂

@@_TheDudeAbides_ Sorry to inform you, but most women are mechanically lost . If you teach you little girl a few things in the garage, like small things about various types of repair you might spark an interest in mechanical things (the way it should be), but iin the world in the past 50 years, that generally doesn't happen . Sorry to step in your coco puffs . lol
And then, a lot of mothers don't even teach them anything in the kitchen, so they might not even learn to cook . And then you have some real dilemmas . Lucia is a woman that you can see, she capitalized on those traits and turned out like a real woman AND have a great mechanical aptitude. You could probably ask her husband and get a shocker . lol :)

Thank you for sharing your project with us. As far as how long it is taking. I think it has been very reasonable considering how big and complex this project is. I am looking forward to seeing it move outdoors and start moving some material. I wish I had this to help in clearing the snow in my driveway in my long Canadian winters.

Your already a HUGE success in my eyes !!! WELL DONE !!!
I imagine the stress of it all must have been quite much, but it turned out really good, and I'm so impressed by this, So I can't wait to see how this ends up.

Fantastic work Lucia! You should be very proud. Don't worry about how jerky it feels until you have a few hours in the drivers seat. Your touch when driving will adapt to the controls. I have one of the original Bobcat skid steers and it is the same. Once used to it, it drives very smooth. Great work..

Nice job. Quite an accomplishment building a skid steer from scratch.
