- Great news is that my loader has a bucket and a Bob-Tach now! However, I figured out a serious problem with hydraulics that I have to solve. In general, you’d better see how it was 😉

While Lucia is awfully fortunate to have access to her grandfather's shop of fabrication tools, she really does some impressive work for which she should be very proud!
The building/shop, and a couple of old tools, was the initial input, but 80-90% of what's present there now she has made/collected
I am sure that Grandpa is very proud and never imagined that his 100lb little granddaughter would step into the reigns, and then master the trades.
lol, no grandpa ever had tools like these, in such new condition.

Try a medium complexity Lego kit first, you learn to break things apart to in to smaller systems or units.
Im not a complete idiot. Im just stressing how impressed i am with her abilities.
With some hand tools, a welder, a drill, a mill and a lathe you can darn near build anything. Throw in a CNC plasma, ezpz.

You are one very lucky girl to have a Grandfather that could teach you all these skills. You are every country boys dream girl. Keep making the videos they are great.

Piston seals are very easy to replace, you can soak them a few minutes in oil heated to about 60ºC to soften them a little.
Rod seals can be tricky on those smaller diameters, there is a tool that bends them into a "pretzel" shape so that they fit through the hole.
I used to rebuild hydraulic cylinders. The cylinder leaking down is most likely an O-ring that has failed and fluid is seeping around it. The easiest thing to do would be to find a local place that sells gaskets and just take it in there and match it up. Make sure the O-ring does not stick too far off the rod as it will "slice" part of the O-ring off when the rod is inserted back into the barrel and cause the same issue. Loving the build so far👍.

There are bolts called "plow bolts" . They have a circular conical head that wedges in a conical hole and a hardened nut is used on the other end. Perhaps that is something that may save you time on future projects. The shots of you welding with the exhaust right above you show how strong the exhaust is, very interesting. Thank you for sharing this project.
Yeah I thought she was going to use plow bolts when she chamfered the bolt holes. Then she ended up using studs.

I have to watch this entirely. That cat looks like a beast. I like everything inc. the design of those chubby tires. I never seen those on BobCats before but sizing and all are well suited. Don't forget to take us for a test dig. Holy smokes, great job.

Loader is looking great Lucia! Don't sweat the leaky cylinder, it's just the way things are now. I find brand new defective components too often now, it's like no one pays attention to detail anymore.
As a heavy equipment mechanic this is just amazing, i hope you plan to build a cab and boom arm stabilizer to keep your boom from moving sideways while you’re loaded with the boom up. it’s very important to consider that, as to not roll the machine over on its side.

Brilliant work! I do believe the bucket may not be reinforced as well as it should be. The impact of a bucket against rocks or hard pan earth will take its toll on the sides and top. I believe I would look at some significant edge reinforcement. This is a great project to watch. Both the engineering and production is enchanting...
The skid steer isn't heavy enough to worry about bending that bucket. She did fine.
Winter is coming. She will move a lot of snow with it.

Really remarkable work. My only concern is that the bucket looks likely to bend under a heavy load. I also find that bolt heads that protrude in to the bucket tend to have things get hung up on them. Perhaps consider making a plate with holes for the bolt heads to recess in to and add thickness at the cutting edge. I'm really loving this build and can't wait to see the finished product.
She won't be able to pick up a heavy enough load to warp the bucket.

Came here from another fabricator channel reference... watched which led me to sub up. You are SO gentle when testing - makes me smile, as I imagine how it will be used 🙂
I've really enjoyed watching this series. I would guess that the cylinder repair will be fairly easy. Normally just a couple o rings and a couple teflon rings if I remember right. The teflon ones are more rigid, but you can work them by hand and stretch them to get them in the groove. The will normally shrink back down if you put a hose clamp around them and slowly tighten it taking care not to tear or pinch the ring.

I love the self sharpening edge / teeth design. Wearing away to reveal a new set of teeth is genius.
One step forward, two steps back. At least you found the problem, without having to scrap and redo the whole hydraulic system. I thought it might have been in the proportioning valve, causing the cylinders to leak down. It’s probably bad o-rings in the cylinder, or a crack in the o-ring sleeve.

What cracks me up is a lot of women would say “men don’t find women like this attractive because she can do what they can and that threatens them” but in reality 1) this women can do more than I can and 2) most men find it incredibly attractive.
I think she is not even aware how crazy impossible it is to build a thingy like that for the first time , and building it with such profession! She could have propperly went to engeneering doing Machinery Diploma! Very talented. I love how she takes on stuff, besides it is scary. maybe a shopdog would help to decompress stressy situations as they always demand potty time or playtime when they sense you need a break! We always think they demand time from us, when in fact, they help us relax and get a good work/play balance in life!
the leak should be a fairly easy fix once you get the cylinder off the machine again, the progress looks great!

Congrats Lucia, on building ur Skid Steer and ur Bucket and Bob Tech. looks like u have all of the tools and machines u needed to
build the Bucket except for a Metal Bending Machine. Maybe down the road.. some type of roll bar is needed..

Obviously you are still in the middle of the project. However, most skid steers have a lot of added weight in the rear end. My Bobcat has about a 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch thick rear door behind the engine, both as an engine cover, as well as a counterweight.
Anyway, it will help a lot once you start using the bucket.
Of course it wouldn't hurt to try it out and see how tippy the skid steer is, and how the traction feels.
I really like the bucket you built, but I believe it could be beefed up in sections to ensure it lasts

Like many others, I admire your guts to tackle a large project like this and it looks great. It all depends on the intended use, but 3 mm sheet on that bucket thickness may prove to be too weak, regardless of your structural reinforcements. If you're just scooping dirt or using it like a large wheel barrow, it might be fine but if you're using it like other skid steers I've seen, it has a high chance of wearing out quickly or buckling. This is obviously just my opinion but 6 mm would be more of a thickness I'd be comfortable with while anticipating abuse.

Hey Lucia. I subscribed your channel a few hours ago and was so flashed, that i watched all of your videos one after the other. It's absolutely fascinating to see you fabricating. Your welding knowledge is great and you seem to know what you do. Your alu-welding on the boat was stunning (I started to learn TIG 3 years ago since corona, but I'm way far from your skills - time and practice will help) and this loader-project is outstanding.
There are no problems - just solutions that need to be found!

5:43 recommend making a sleeve for the bolt the height of where you want that spring tension, or possibly some green or purple lock tite to keep the bolt adjustment where you want it.

Trouble shooting problems is one of the most difficult to do! Lucia, you must be so proud of yourself! In all, you've inspired me to be more hands on on my own skid steer. Really excited to see where this goes! Can hardly wait for the paint. What will be the lift capacity when complete and what is weight rating of those tires? Thanks in advance!
By the time you have built it and ironed out all the problems that come a long you could market the design and maybe even look into manufacturing them...very cool so far

replacing seals in a hydraulic cylinder is a piece of cace-it can however also be the overpreasure-valve(if there is one)in the cylinder that is leaking thru
Always a pleasure to watch your progress on this project.
Usually skid steer tires are blocky and strong to handle the continuous skid. Those tires are not typical. Well maybe they work at snow.
Amazing work, Lucia. Hopefully the cylinder leak is just a bad gasket or something simple. Even leaking, though, I'm sure that steer would move more dirt than either of us could with a shovel. 😅👍
When working with hydraulic oil you can put on old vacuum on the inlet of the tank (not in the oil). The "vacuum" that is created can reduce the amount of oil that leaks out when working with the hoses etc.
You had me at "builds skid steer", but then I saw how smart, capable, AND adorable she is. I subscribed.
Ran into this issue when I rebuilt a front loader on a tractor. I had welded on the ends of the cylinder while it was in the compressed state and the heat from the wielding had damaged the seals on the piston.
Great video as always Lucia. If you haven't already pulled the cylinder off and apart, it may be worth you bleeding it in case there is some air in there still. Other than that it will be a piston seal or the o-ring between the piston and ram shaft. Good luck.
A minor setback with that piston. Can't wait to see it full operational and moving some heavy loads around. Nice job with the hydraulics.
This summer I was going to build one too... but I had so many other things to do, I just bought a BobCat. A nice machine.

i also have a milling machine and a lathe and all. i also make allot of stuff..
but never seen a woman interested in trying stuff out. or ask me what those machines i own can do..

You need a hold valve in the hydraulics to stop it loosing pressure & lowering bucket/ lift ext, hope this is helpful.

As a farm boy who learned to operate a skid-steer when I was like 5 years old, I have thoughts. One... this is such a cool project. Two... I know a poor abandoned skid-steer sitting in a barn for nearly 40 years because its 28 horsepower Kohler twin cylinder was ruined by an overtightened, too-long screw into its cylinder block. There must be an easier way... haha, it's funny because I follow other channels where they try to restore junk to a working state... and Lucia's probably right to build her own from raw materials than go that way. But my real question is, once it is done, what do you plan to do with it?
id also love to hear that question answered. this looks like a nice project. but ive ran several skid steers over the years and this looks like a lawn mower weight unit and wont be very practical. bout like plowing or pushing dirt with a big lawn tractor.

For the cuttingedge i think i would have prefered to thread the holes instead and then mounted them with countersunk bolts. Great video
You may wanna make a hard stop for the bolts to run up against for the detachment handles springs. The ones that keep the handle tight against the body. Or the bolts will end up backing out even with the spring tension against them. Nice work.
You should ignore all the comments telling you the bucket is too small or not heavy enough. Your skid steer is not heavy enough and your hydraulics are not strong enough to be able to put enough of a load in that bucket to damage it. You did fine.

cylinder is very easy to rebuild. it iwll have a piston attacked to the bottom of the rod (large round disc) if it is ot welded on that is. and it will have seals attached to it. you will also need to check the cylinder walls to ensure there are no gouges onthe walls. the end cap has 1-2 seals in it to keep fluid in. when the piston rod goes in and out.
That workshop has a lot of gear.idk who owns the shop, props to this shop setup.

The bucket is beautiful, but I really think you may need to add a stiffener along the lower lip to prevent it from bowing. I have a John Deere bucket made from similar thickness steel and the blade has a stiffener that is at least 12mm. Even at that I've managed to bend it in use.
And a tube across the top edge to stiffen and mount three grab hooks for chain.
I believe this will get bent up. I have a heavier one and it still bends.
Yes, chain hooks are a must. @court2379
She already added stiffeners though, and the hydraulics are not strong enough to pick up anything that's going to bend the bucket.
@@TehButterflyEffect Snag a root or rock at speed with the corner, and I have my doubts. But ultimately if it does either fix it, or make a stronger one.
Great video, your grandfather would be so proud of you. Your engineering abilities' far surpass many "engineer's" I have worked with in the past, well done. Have you thought about making a gantry crane for your workshop to help with the heavy lifting? I think it would make a great future project video series.
Thank you very much! A good crane is my pain, but it's unsuitable for my shop because of low ceiling.
