Thank you for your honest opinion.
I got off the BMW boat quite a few years ago.
I started with an R100RS, then K75S, K100RS, and then I left the pure road bikes to enter the world of adventure bikes with the R-100GS, the R-100GS PD and finally the R-1100GS.
Now, some days, when I wake up in the morning, I have the sweet taste of having dreamt about my first GS, the R-100GS.
Personally, the best bike I ever had. Simple, human, affordable, light compared to the current emulations of the Titanic on two wheels. Without the need to have the dashboard of a Jumbo 747 and be equipped like an astronaut.
I did the maintenance myself, because it was that simple.
With it, I travelled through a multitude of countries in old Europe, up the winding roads of the Alps, floating across the great Hungarian plain, in the depths of Transylvania. Time with her passed slowly, and the sunsets were eternal. I wasn't afraid of anything. 210 kg, 60 hp, what more do you need.
The only bike that felt like we were one because I knew all its deepest secrets.

@@XaosMorlan i agree 100% . The costs of this heavy monsters reached a peak no one can afford. Another reason to avoid a BMW is the unfriendly and arrogant service. Now with 72 and 54 years riding had one BMW, good bike but changed after 3 years for the japs again and the world was allright. Looking now for a mid size bike like a Honda CX 500 for better handling even in parking lots, a GS 1300 will kill me! One other reason is this whole electronic garbage i never needed in my life!

A very useful and honest insight. Thanks Andy. Anyone walking into a showroom can immediately decide if they like the looks or not, but a quick sit on one or even the typical test ride won’t give insights into issues like the faff with luggage and pillion comfort etc. so I’m with you - my 1250GS is staying put.

It’s a curious thing. One would think that product improvement would make servicing easier but in the case of so many modern bikes it’s just more trouble than it has to be such as the TransAlp air filter location (funny enough the F900GS has a really easy air filter change). Triumph might be proud of how long their valve service intervals on the new bikes but what’s the point in that if the service costs an arm and a leg?

I like the subtlety you added to the filming of this vid; whereby you're physically walking away from the bike as you describe each of the reasons for not wanting to buy one. Turning your back on it and walking away. This shows the thought and effort that you put into your videos. I also agree about the faffery that has crept into vehicles now, not just bikes but cars too. Menus within menus, endless scrolling. The only time I want to see a menu is when I'm sitting down at a nice restaurant!! It's already been said but no harm in reaffirming - great to see an honest review. Keep up the great work.

The competition was with used bike from the same brand. That meant that they have to make the new bike "better" and more compelling with more stuff and blah blah blah to make people go out and buy a new bike and not just buy a second hand one. I am delighted to watch your long term GS1300 review. I totally agree with you. I have a GS1200, 2016 model and it's (still) a great machine. Just returned from the S.o.France, no problem and 2500kms on the clock. Perfect. I have tried the new GS twice and after both extended rides I found the bike a bit cramped, heavy and that fu.....ng load of Electronic Switches, Menus, Oh my God! awful. Sure adaptive cruise is nice, but having even cruise on a bike is a big luxury, I don't need it to interrupt my driving. I actually found the cruise on the 1300 dangerous, whereas on my 1200, I can flick it off and on in a moment, no menu's required. And so it goes on, Heated Grips, have to go to a long menu while driving & almost anything you need to do is somewhere in that menu selection!.
I don't think that is clever!... Bikes are not cars and simplicity is King. The new Engine and Gearbox? It clunks into 1st gear as badly as the old GS does, shift assist was always great, not much improvement, so I wonder why they bothered with the new engine anyway. It's not that smooth and the extra 100cc is totally lost on me, don't need more!....... So, the 1300 got a thumbs down from me & my trusty 1200 will live on for another few years......... Thank you for confirming my own thoughts. Keep up the good work!...

Just got back from a 2500 mile tour down to the Alps, spending 5 days enjoying the alpine passes. The R1300 functioned faultlessly and I quickly found the buttons / functions intuitive and easy to use. I did use a BMW top box which worked without issue but did not need panniers, I was solo riding. The biggest thing I noticed having done more than 100K miles of GS 1200/1250, is the amazing improvement in handling and feel when the road was wet or uneven. I was really impressed and would suggest if you want to plod on a bit quicker and were maybe considering a Multistrada then try the R1300, its amazing. 😊

Agreed. I rode the R1300GS for four days in Germany late last month. The balance and handling at speed are terrific. But the complexity to do formerly simple things confounded and frustrated me. Halfway through my tour, I accidentally turned on the heated grips. After about 15 minutes, I figured out how to turn them off, but - and this is something that is only funny in the movies - I inadvertently turned on the heated seat ! I never could figure out how to turn that off, so I sautéed my nuts for two days. The power-assisted center stand is more bother than a convenience. The thing starts to lift the bike as soon as you get one point of contact down, which starts to tip the bike precariously and caused me some alarm a couple of times. I believe the power assist feature was developed because BMW discovered the weight and balance of the bike made the conventional physical lifting onto the center stand nearly impossible. This smacks of a failure of engineering foresight. Overall, nice bike, but a big pass for me. Not interested.

In their place I bought an old cheap R1100RS for two grand so I could at least keep riding. It was an eye opener. I came to realise that you really don't need to spend bucket loads on the latest tech laden hyper tourer to get maximum enjoyment. The RS was back to basics biking and all the better for it. I did get another job quite quickly, but I kept that bike and still have it to this day. A good, used R1200GS can be bought outright for less than the likely first 2 years depreciation of the 1300 - and a 1200 is arguably a better bike.

Everything I need to change modes or other functions are intelligently placed and simply require a simple button push. It is really distracting to have a complicated control system. The lack of the superfluous makes for a more enjoyable and safer ride. It is also a very comfortable for someone of a taller and broader stature such as myself. As far as weight is concerned, I used to ride a 900lb American V-twin. When I first sat on the BMW what surprised me was how light it is compared to my previous motorcycles and how much less vibration. It has character without histrionics. Spoke to the local BMW salesman, he also said they expected more sales of the 1300, and that used 1250's are selling fast.

much easier it was to ride our factory low 1250 vs the 1300 with the adaptive suspension. I thought it was just us that had such a problem getting the new one off the stand. Glad to learn someone else had the same experience. We did enjoy the phone charging storage on top of the tank and the factory USB port in the top case. It allowed my wife to keep her iPhone charged while taking lots of great pictures and videos on our ride.

Currently got 3 bikes but will be going back to 2 or even 1 as the costs of looking after them all is crazy, plus home maintenance is not straightforward like the bikes I learnt to ride on 40 years ago. I went to my local BMW dealer and sat on the new R1300GS and I was impressed that as a shorty (30" inseam) that I could get my feet flat on the ground. Tempting, as with my GSA I'm on the balls of my feet, which while ok most of the time, can lead to some exciting moments at slower speeds when navigating obstacles. Given the escalating bike prices and service costs - the 12,000 mile service on my GSA at the local dealer is $1,200 USD - I think I'll wait on a new GS and see what the future holds.

Additionally to your comments, I found my 30min test ride on one quite a bit more buffety than previous gen GS.
On the positive side, one thing I really liked was the observant quality and finish of the mechanicals. No more naked alloy lathed surfaces post paint shop, no nasty naked metal edges for crap and water to stick on and start the bubbling etc. I bet you these (electronics a bit of an unknown) will cosmetically last a lot better than anything BMW since 2004.

Husband & rode the new 1300 over 1250 miles on tour recently - we were keen to compare with our 1250GS . We agree with many of your comments. The bike feels very agile and nimble on the move ,the engine is responsive and the quick shifter smoother than the 1250. The new rear suspension is a big improvement and the bike is easier to lift onto the centre stand even with luggage. As pillion positives are foot peg position and general comfort ( downside of our 1250 is the vario topbox which is angled forward making it uncomfortable)
Totally agree re new luggage - central locking is a faff and the topbox seemed flimsy.1300 feels heavy to get off side stand due to lean angle, gearbox seemed noisy around 2500rpm in traffic and the engine whilst more refined has lost some of its character. Totally agree with your comments re scrolling through tech menu and the look of the bike especially from the front .

I understand the R 1200 GS, you mentioned, has a curb weight of about 245 kg, while the 1300 is 237 kg, a small but significant improvement. They will both weigh more with bags and a center stand. Perhaps the BMW luggage has become heavier, but it won't be long until lightweight alloy aftermarket options become available. The big downsides were the hard as a rock seat (it had the comfort seat fitted) and the new screen which was too small and caused buffeting. A replacement screen was not advised as it ruined the electric screen motor. Lastly the Vario luggage it not available. A noble effort but I'm keeping my grand old 1250 for a few more years.

That‘s what I call a honest review..! I agree with every positive point but the points you mentioned as negatives ones are exactly what I do like, as well. The new esthetic, the new features, the new punchy motor, even the new luggage system, those are things that made me trade my beloved 1250 for the new 1300. Even the price is ok if you take into consideration all the new things, and I suppose they will fix the problems with the luggage sooner than later. But anyway, kudos for not being afraid of criticizing the new GS. Everybody should listen to reviewers like you, AND try by themselves before purchasing to be able to make the right decision. Saludos.

I appreciate the honesty. I am still riding my 20 year old air cooled GS1200

Thanks Andy, and you are right, I tried to buy few motorcycles in my 55 years long life with my brain, opposed to my heart, and while they were great machines, I hated riding them, I absolutely agree that how a bike looks is crucial for the buying decision, even though, it might not make sense, and seem childish to some, after all, who cares about the light and what it looks like, I don't see it when I ride anyway, so who cares.... but I get it, and 100% on board, I regretted every bike I bought that I was not in love with, even though it was great bike from a machine point of view. Also thanks for the honesty, you managed to build your business while being honest and still having good relations with dealers that can provide test bikes, that is admirable

What a nice and honest review.
I disagree with you though. I've kept my 2021 GSA and I've got the 1300 Tramunta. I never thought I'd like another bike as much as that 1250, but the 1300 is now my favourite. It's just so much fun to ride. The menu structure doesn't bother me and neither do the looks. It's just a blast. I'm taking it around the Baltic in a couple of weeks.
That said, I'm going two up to Portugal a few weeks after and that I'm doing on the 1250. With a pillion that's just a more suitable bike.
I guess I'm lucky to have the choice.

I’m with you on this, but the adventure version may change that for me going forward.
I traded my GS for an RT last year and I’m happy for the moment.
To be honest the new GS hasn’t tickled my bits to a point of, ‘I must have it’.
