    Excited to see this one! I love the Unlock boxes.

      I usually enjoy them too, although I must admit I am in two minds about this one! I think we would have benefitted from a universal hint system for this one, since once you get a lot of cards but have no idea how to progress then the game provides no method to get you going again - apart from taking hints randomly on different cards, which would end up spoiling you repeatedly on other puzzles.

    • @LauraPuzzles
      @LauraPuzzles 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@drgareth I'm with Gareth here - so many cards up front and no way of knowing what to take a hint ON! I recall that sometimes the app will pop up with a general hint or nudge when you're evidently not making time-efficient progress - that would have been very helpful in this game, especially for the first few puzzles! Thank you for watching! :)

      I love the idea of this box (all great source games, although I haven't played Mysterium myself), but I think it's fair to say we struggled with all three games. ;) Pandemic was our best solve, although we got properly stuck at one point since we didn't think to re-use an earlier card; Ticket to Ride I felt required too much out-of-system thinking of a type that doesn't work in other Unlock games and so felt a bit unfair to me; and this one... well, you can see from the video how we fared with this one! :)

    • @BenDaresAll
      @BenDaresAll 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @drgareth oh, I'm reversed. Ticket to Ride was TOUGH for me, for something listed as easy. Pandemic was pretty rough too but it was listed as hard.
      Myserium tho, while we needed clues, was my absolute favorite in story and puzzles! That and the Hades puzzle are the ones I share to friends.

    • @drgareth
      @drgareth  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@BenDaresAll It's so interesting how everyone's experience differs. It probably depends on which puzzles you get and which you don't, I suppose. Watching this back I think we could have 'got' a few of the things we were stuck on if we'd better understood what was going on - for me at least having no idea of the scenario was a problem because it meant I never really grasped how it all fitted together. And in this game more than most you have to consider much of it more holistically.

      @@drgareth I do REALLY want to play the board game now tho, to see how it works and what the similarities are!!

  • @DevilboyScooby

    Personally, I like to keep the timer running while sorting the cards- it feels like the game's equivalent to running around the escape room and finding all the loose bits before actually starting to solve puzzles. But to each their own!
    Glad to see it's not just me and my friends that struggles with these sometimes! Still a lot of fun to watch though, even if you are unfamiliar with Mysterium (I haven't played, but I believe it's about one player wordlessly giving clues to the others from beyond the grave in order to solve a mystery?)

    • @drgareth
      @drgareth  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, I think it would definitely have helped to know the basics of the game, even though the Unlock instructions claim you don't need to know. And I agree on searching through the cards, but it makes boring and tedious video so we have to do it differently when filming.

  • @erict.517
    @erict.517 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Not being able to solve the first puzzle really sets the tone for the remiander of the game. This seems to happen more frequently in Unlock! games.

    • @drgareth
      @drgareth  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yes, I think that's a fair comment! The problem near the start of this particular game (and it happens in Unlock fairly often) is that you are given a vast number of cards and then given no obvious way to take a hint if you are stuck - since you don't know which card you should be asking for help on. You could try a scattergun approach to hints, but then you end up potentially ruining most of the game. So when you reach an impasse, because you haven't intuited the 'out of system' solution they are looking for, you really don't have any way to progress. And those out of system solutions (i.e. not based on taking card numbers by combining numbers in ways the instructions permit you to) are very inconsistent across different Unlock games - as you can see in this one, where you are intended to take one card based on intuiting its implicit letter, but not another, within the same game! That's inconsistent (and unfair) design. AND because the system has no inherent way of checking that you have done the right thing or not (unless you happen to have a card which tells you to discard cards you haven't taken) it has no way of self-correcting. Which ultimately means you are not incentivised to try out-of-the-box solutions since so much of the game system acts against encouraging this - there is no support system to keep the house of cards from collapsing if you prod it in the wrong way.

    I am SO glad I didn't try this one out myself; it would have frustrated me to no end. It's unfortunate, because the Mysterium boardgame is quite a lot of fun.

    • @drgareth
      @drgareth  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Having now read about the Mysterium game I do think that having played it would have helped - even though the game instructions explicitly say there is no need to have done so. It wouldn't have helped with the O at the start, but I would have understood much better that the visions can be vague and aren't necessarily designed to be unambiguously certain. (Whether that is a good idea for an Unlock game is another question, but at least I would have realised how nebulous some of them were expected to be)

    • @BenDaresAll

      @drgareth you totally do not need to play the Mysterium game. The characters in thus Unlock do not appear in the original game anyhow

      Thanks - and I hope you enjoy it! We recorded this not long after solving the others in this box, but since it was a bit of a messy solve it's been sitting in the edit pile for a while! :) I'm glad to finally upload it, since it's definitely an interesting game with some features not directly found in other Unlock games.

    My fravorit moment “how do we get the ghost to the quige board.” 15 minutes later “what room do we bring the ghost to.” It’s funny but I feel the first puzzle drain you of puzzle solved ing energy.

    Aw man, this was my current favorite Unlock game! I was waiting to see you guys play it and was hoping you two would enjoy it too! Gosh darn! Oh well.
    We did have trouble at the green ghost circle at the start. At the accusations, my friends figured out that it was two people and chose the right ones. They figured the two eyes and saw the ring. I was just stuck on the apple.
    Well, we may be on different wavelengths about this game but I'll wait for you guys to do the absolute TOUGHEST Unlock box! The Supernatural Adventures is super difficult! Ragnarok was almost hint after hint after hint for me, haha

    • @drgareth
      @drgareth  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ah, Unlock Supernatural Adventures isn't out in the UK. Oh wait - it is, but it’s just not on Amazon. Thanks for the heads-up! :) And sorry not to like the game ;) - I replied to your other comment on why I think that might be, but to add to that I think that on the circle at the start the problem is the game doesn't have a way to nudge you in the right direction, except maybe by taking random hints - although I don't know if that actually ever helps you. I looked at the full solution, eventually, which I'd prefer not to do and don't think I've ever done in another Unlock game (although maybe I have). On the visions I had no idea we were looking for small details and assumed it would be just a reveal on finding the cards - I didn't understand that basic aim of the game, and I think if I had even read the premise for Mysterium first (convey a solution to others via subtle choice of otherwise irrelevant visual cards, as far as I can gather!) that would have hugely helped with my enjoyment of the rest of the game.

    • @BenDaresAll
      @BenDaresAll 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @drgareth oh, I guess you're right, reading the gameplay format of Mysterium might have helped with the vision interpretation part of this Unlock.
      What's your next game to do? You'll be doing an advent puzzle?

      @@BenDaresAll Next Friday I'll post a solve of Exit The Stormy Flight (or maybe Unlock Short Adventures: The Birmingham Murders, depending on which I have time to edit - we've solved both), but then yes throughout Advent I'll post that day's solve from the 2024 Exit the Game Advent Calendar, The Missing Hollywood Star. I haven't decided yet whether to post any additional calendars too, but perhaps not since it's mainly the Exit one that most people watch. We'll see! :)

    45:01 bit of trivia for you- Mahna Mahna (that song) was created for a Swedish softcore porn film, before being appropriated by the Muppets. So it's not the theme, but it is from the Muppets.
