    In 1893 real estate heir William Waldorf Astor knocked down a mansion to build an amazing hotel in New York City. His competitive cousin got in the game by building a nicer hotel next door. The rest is history.

    Interesting! My aunt got a divorce in a Waldorf Astoria. Her husband apparently had 2 other whole entire families, kids and all that were kept a secret. She found him in a Waldorf with one of them. May have lost her marriage but she got a pretty sweet lump sum out of it! Now she's retired in a mansion in south Florida. Woo, go aunt Jen! Cheers to that!

    I visited the huge nyc public library on 42nd street and seen original oil paintings of the Astor family. It brought me here.

    William tore down his mansion and built the Waldorf specifically to annoy and upset his aunt. He also moved to England and became Viscount Astor.
