I hate to be a nitpicker, but there is a typo in "Vanderbilt" in your pinned summary. The "i" and "b" got flipped. Not a big deal at all, but just thought I'd point it out so you can edit the comment. If this has been fixed, then you read my comment and edited the typo. Thanks again for the excellent and informative video!

One Vanderbilt Summit is THE BEST. Here are some tips: Reserve for the very first time slot in the day, line up about 15 minutes ahead of time, skip the picture-taking (They want you to do it, but you don't have to), and go directly to the elevators. They have good crowd control, but you will have the most elbow room and almost no waiting if you go early. Also, there is a snack bar on the highest level. If you can, nab a table right next to the windows and have a cup of coffee or a soda. You can't get that experience anywhere else. Skip the extra charge for the elevator to the higher level-- not worth it.
Top of the Rock is my second favorite. Such a great art deco building and you're right in the middle of everything. Empire State is iconic, but the price and crowds are ridiculous. Back in the day, you didn't have to pay extra to go to the 102nd floor. Sorry they're doing that now.

I have done all 5 decks (not in one day!!) and appreciate you pointing out that they all have pros and cons. I’ll add these details:
1)One World’s entire southern view is essentially just water, which to me is less interesting than land & buildings
    2) The Edge offers the least “hassle” to visit- efficient security, minimal forced sales pitches for add ons
    3) Obviously people love One Vanderbilt, but I find it’s almost more of an immersive fun park than it is an observatory. The mandatory booties are a nuisance, and stepping around people lying down on the floor is hazardous. You also hint at the temperature- with all the mirrors reflecting it gets very hot on a sunny day
    4) TOR is relatively spacious for the size crowds it attracts and is more about the views than the amusements. My favorite
5)ESB is the most centrally located for the most balanced views in all 4 directions.

Since I am a history freak and my grandparents immigrated there, ESB has my heart because of the history and how fast it was built. They used to have glass inserts a few years during the renovation that you could see the original builders on the etched glass. I have pictures of them. Plus knowing how hard these men worked and the nerves needed to have to be at such crazy heights.

I have been to all of the observatories featured in this video numerous times and my recommendations aren't based on the lines, views or whatever immersive experiences they offer, but more on the time of year. If visiting in summer, definitely go to Top of the Rock or The Edge. One World Observatory or The Summit @ One Vanderbilt are my recommendations for the winter.
Jon noted that the newer observatories seem to have a dark tunnel thing going on prior to entering the elevator and this is where I make my other recommendations. If time is of the essence and you want to get to the top ASAP, OWO would be the best option.
While the views from the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock are certainly enthralling, in order to reach them visitors must first go through long exhibits that are walk-through mini museums dedicated to the histories of their respective buildings. They might be interesting to a first time visitor or someone like me with a keen interest in these buildings, but the exhibits can feel rather protracted and consume a fair chunk of your visiting time as you wander through en route to the elevator. It is extended further at the ESB where two elevators must be taken to reach the 86th floor observatory, and there are lengthy exhibits in the building's podium and on the 80th floor.
At OWO, by contrast, there is only a relatively short immersive video experience immediately after security (that doesn't encourage people to linger), followed by a walk-through mock up of the bedrock upon which the tower sits before you arrive at the express elevator.
Less than a minute later- after watching time lapse video of NYC's development from the days of the Lenape to the completion of One WTC whilst ascending in the elevator itself- there is a three minute welcome video before you are free to enjoy the view you paid 58 USD to enjoy. Plan your entry time carefully, and you can be bottom to top at OWO in less than ten minutes. Therefore, if time is tight, go for OWO. If you have a whole morning, afternoon or evening at your disposal, my recommendations are as above.

Was just in New York three weeks ago and went to the SUMMIT after visiting the other observation decks on previous trips. SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is definitely the coolest of the five. Word of advice: Buy your tickets in advance because they sell out quickly. And be prepared for long lines. I waited nearly an hour to get to the top despite arriving 15 minutes before my scheduled time.
My personal rankings for all five observation decks:
    1) Summit One Vanderbilt: It's just so cool and unique. I went in the early afternoon and on clear sunny day and the sunlight bouncing of the mirrors nearly blinded me. lol
    2) Top of the Rock: For views of the city, I still think this one is the best because you're right in the heart of Midtown. Strongly advise going at sunset if possible.
    3) The Edge: This one is the best at capturing the entire breadth of Manhattan. I highly suggest doing this one at night. The city looks magical.
    4) Empire State: Eh. It's an historic building, but doesn't compare to the top three.
    5) One World Trade Center: I would put it a spot higher if it had an outdoor observation deck. Also, being the highest doesn't necessarily mean best views. I feel the same way about the Sears Tower in Chicago. The John Hancock building offers superior views despite being smaller.

Visited NYC in December and we did all 5. This would be our favourites in order.
    1. Summit Vanderbilt (go in the evening)
    2. Edge (we went at sunrise, incredible)
    3. One world observatory
    4. Empire State Building
    5. Top of the rock
All are great but we just felt the top 3 being the more modern ones had that little bit extra but empire state was incredible also and offers great facts and pictures on the history inside as you travel up. Top of the rock has great views but just felt there wasn’t really much else to it, we went in the evening but probably should have went during the day as it offers great views of Central Park.
    Hope this helps

Planning to go to NYC in 2025, think i will go for VanderBilt, Empire State and Top of the Rock after this video 👌

Top of the Rock is the best imo. The only one where u can really get an unobstructed view w/o taking pics or looking through glass. Also having 1WTC, ESB, 1 Vandy & Hudson Yards in ur view is the best.

I visited NYC in 2021 & took myself to 2 observation decks! I think my very favorite was the One World Observatory, it has special meaning to me. I happened to be working in a 9-1-1 Communication Center in California on 9/11 & took a lot of calls from panic stricken people. To stand where it all happened while I was on the 9-1-1 Lines 20 years earlier was surreal. On a positive note, the views were incredible! And the burger I had was pretty good, too.
A close 2nd was the Empire State Building. It's just so iconic. I paid the extra money to go to the very top where the views are even better & a tour guide took my picture standing over the night cityscape!
Top of the Rock? I don't know, but I'll let you know after my return trip this year (2023)!

I’ve been to NYC 39 times. And I’ve probably been to the Empire State Building 86th floor observation deck like 12 times. Always amazing. Need to checkout the others

I haven't been to them all but Top of the Rock is a favorite. Whenever I had visitors in NYC, their first night, after dinner, I would always take them to Rockefeller Center to walk about then take them to Top of the Rock. The view of the city from there at night is quite special.

Thank you for all of these awesome videos! My mom, sister, and I are celebrating my 36th birthday to a trip to NYC I think first weekend in May. I’m definitely looking forward to it. It’s always been a dream of mine to go. My family used to live an hour away from the city, but I was too young to remember any of it.

I personally went to the One World Observatory and without a doubt, was not disappointed. I didn’t have to pre-buy my ticket but was offered by an employee to purchase my ticket thru a kiosk if you are using a debit / credit card…. and was in and up in under 10 minutes. The elevator ride is fantastic and a lot of people miss the original trade center building on the right when they go up. It appears in the year it was built and the fades away slowly. The views are unbeatable and if you get the premium ticket they give you a tablet that you can hold up in the direction you are facing and it will tell you everything you are looking at. You also get a fifteen dollar voucher towards food or the gift shop. Perfect place to go for most tourists in my opinion.

The roof view from the og WTC was spectacular. Especially for the money, TOTR observation is the winner.

I was Jan 2, 2023 at One world observatory, so far good since I booked the priority ticket. I was amazed with the skypod. It is my first time in NYC, but no chance to visit other tops. I choose One world since I believe it is the highest tower in NYC. I got great views up there.

I'm glad I didn't see the video before going to One World, we went tonight in the attempt to make the most out of the Sightseeing pass, and luckily we got there and the lines were endurable. I say I'm happy I didn't see the video before, 'cause I didn't know about the big reveal, and having that experience at night, I think it's waaay better that during light time. As it's all dark at night the reveal for me was a complete surprise, my jaw fell to the first floor hahaha. But planning for the next days, I do appreciate the video!! Will totally consider the recommendations and pros and cons. Thanks a lot for all the content you share, I've been tagging you on Instagram and our trip has been great thanks to you!!

One of my favourite things to do in holiday is visit observation decks and check out the city views

  •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've been in 3 of those 5 observation decks.
    - Empire State Building
    - The Edge
    - Summit One Vanderbilt
And honestly, it's difficult to say which one is my favorite, I've had amazing experiences when visiting these places.
Nex time I'm in NYC I will definitely go to One World observatory and Top of the rock.

Stay in last August end. Visited all observatories but Sommerset (Was not included in the pass). Empire is iconic, fantastic night view from the Edge, best view from Top of the Rock, great view of South NYC and river and ocean from One World. Take a pass if you want to do multiple observatories, consider each ticket is about 50$. Top of the Rock and the Edge have outside terraces, no outside view from One World, Empire view is limited by protection cage. I do not like lean on windows and look down from height, so I liked much the terraces, which gave me no ‘anxiety’ and had also more open view. Edge has also glass section on the floor to walk on the void and djset…My very personal ranking based on the experience: 1) top of the rock 2) the edge and empire 3) one world. I have to say we were four people and we have four different ideas…Do it in different hours of the day to gain different sensations any time!

I have watched several of your videos. Thank you for sharing all your experiences so that I can have the same experience in October!!! I have reserved tickets through Get your Guide for both "Top of the Rock" and "One World"!! Plus, I'm going to do the Hop on Hop off bus (for cheap transport)!!! Thanks again for inspiring me!! NOTE: I was just going to fly through but changed my flight to stay for 2 days after watching your videos!!

One Summit Vanderbilt is the best. The Edge doesn't control people to leave the building, so even If you pay a ticket before the sunset, you pay less, and you can stay there from 5pm to 8pm that nobody will notice.

Great vid - but I’d bet most will agree that the Chrysler Building is the #1 skyscraper in the city… and probably benefits from the lack of an observation deck.
