    I'm convinced Disney keeps the Atmos mixes for films like this tame on purpose so that they can sell you on IMAX Enhanced on Disney+ (as opposed to 4K Bluray which is a much better platform), the same is true of the IMAX Enhanced video (aspect ratio switch)

      I just can’t imagine that it can match the sound and dynamics of a 4k BRD.

  • @pb24dagrk
    @pb24dagrk 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

    You should disable the dynamic range setting at the beginning of your video. It applies dynamic range compression, but also makes it louder so it might seem "better" at first because it's louder.
    Similarly, generally speaking, Dolby tends to mix at lower volumes, but it's the same mix otherwise. There's no 2 separate soundtracks mixed. Dolby or DTS are just delivery codecs, it's no different than using zip or winrar. People "think" DTS is better because they correlate the volume differences and Dolby even without Dialnorm just have lower volumes but once you adjust for the different volume, it's the same.
    With that said, you're appreciating the higher bitrates too. So I absolutely believe the Imax Enhanced is better because of that.

    Keep in mind you will only get IMAX enhanced audio if YOUR DISPLAY supports IMAX enhanced. So let's say you have an AVR that supports IMAX ENHANCED DTS along with a streaming device that supports DTS such as an ONN Google TV but you are using a JVC projector you will not get the IMAX ENHANCED AUDIO. But you will get IMAX ENHANCED video. Which seems so stupid that you can get the video but not the audio.

    • @ChrisBoylan
      @ChrisBoylan 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Not exactly true. THE ONN Google box doesn't support DTS:X Profile 2 decoding. It only supports DTS core and DTS passthrough. There is no passthrough concept for DTS:X Profile 2. It *must* be decoded in the client device. This is why none of the current streaming devices like AppleTV, FireTV, Roku, and NVIDIA Shield work. They do not decode DTS-X Profile 2.
      The streaming device has to support DTS:X Profile 2 decoding for this to work. Right now in the US, only Sony and Hisense TVs can support this as they have dts:x Profile 2 decoders on board. DTS and Disney+ started with these TVs because they both can decode DTS-X for streaming (DTS:X Profile 2) and they're both on the Google TV platform so they could work on a single app platform for multiple brands. Outside the US, the feature works on select Xiaomi, Philips and Sharp TVs (which are also on the Google TV or Android TV platforms).
      In the future, if this feature gets ported to a standalone streaming device like a FireTV Stick, then this feature will absolutely work with any display including JVC projectors. The Disney+ app polls the streaming device - not the display - to verify DTS:X Profile 2 compatibility. And if it can handle DTS:X Profile 2, you get the audio panel for DTS:X on your screen.

Is it the compression, is it the mix (i.e. differences in artistic intent), is it how the AVR/processor handles the different formats with regards to bass management etc. (IMAX enhanced has it's own settings in the AVR/processor), are they different in SPL levels etc?

    Excellent update on IMAX enhanced audio Ealan. We not only need more streaming platform to adopt the audio format, we also need more streamers (Apple TV, Roku, etc) to adopt it.
    For those of us who don't have a TV that supports the format, there's a tweak I highly recommend. Set your subwoofer(s) cross over at 110 hz, not 80, and raise the gain/volume level on both the processor and sub itself. I did not invent this tweak, it is used in the two channel audiophile community for music being deliver by bookshelf/standmount speakers for added sub integration. The tweak works to deliver more impactful dynamic and to ease the burden on the speakers. It's recommended even if you have tower speakers, not just smaller speakers.
    Again this tweak is for streaming Atmos content, not for a lossless Atmos mixed on a 4K disc. Thanks Ealan for your great work. I like your easy going not too serious attitude.

    Bro, close to my house in Pembroke Pines, Florida, I have an AMC theater with IMAX with laser and Dolby Cinema. Both theaters are perfect, with no issues with bass, speakers, or bad calibration. I noticed I prefer IMAX more. It's more dynamic, the bass is stronger, and the speaker imaging is better. I do have an AMC membership, so I tried the same movies in both theaters. I also have a 7.2.4 home theater. The IMAX theater has four overhead speakers.

    Good to hear it sounds better, but all these comments that have turned this into “DTS:X is better than Atmos” are just comical. It’s all about how the tracks are mixed. There are great Atmos tracks and great DTS:X tracks, and also bad ones for both formats.
    Disney is the real problem. The audio on their 4K discs has been weak for years. I can’t say it’s been all of them, because Prey sounded great. But for
    the most part, they just don’t release great audio tracks.

    This is what I have gathered from interviews on the subject
    DTS X imax sounds better on D+ (I agree it does) for two reasons, neither are really the fact it's DTS X.
    First Disney are using a different mix for the DTS X versions, they are based on the cinema soundtrack not the neutered home mixes they put out.
    Secondly D+ are using a higher bitrate on the DTS track, I am betting if Atmos matched those two things there would be very little to no difference.
    Also the Bravia core app on your Sony oled has DTS X Imax versions of the movies and the atmos mixes and are far higher bitrates, that's what you should do the testing on.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I’ll see if there’s a way to check bitrates. 🤔
      And just in general, it shouldn’t matter plugging directly into the TV or into an AVR, unless maybe it’s a PS5 or XBOX Series X and your TV can process gaming features better (depending on which component is newer).
      But in regards to IMAX audio on Disney+, you HAVE to use the internal streaming apps to get it to work (for now). So a CAT6 to the TV would be best (until streamers finally support IMAX/DTS:X).
