Good video. Found your channel via retro chinese handhelds. And here I am again looking up a controller repair. Making all the videos I need lately. Also, I resent the implication we raged to kill the controller. My gf is just an enthusiastic pinball player (she's ranked in pinball fx lol).
😁 I wasn't implying everyone breaks these through rage. But I'm pretty sure it's how this particular controller was broken 😅 with me it's usually clumsiness. Got another controller repair video coming this weekend, this time for the Switch Pro Controller
After commenting on your Instagram post a couple weeks back I finally got around to trying this. Such a great video that made it really clear how the controller comes apart, and the hair dryer trick really does the job! Two controllers with broken bumpers are fully functional again. Thanks for your help 😁
On my 3rd Xbox Series X controller in 2 years of me having the console. 2 times it was the LB button, and 1 time the left analog stick had very bad drift. At this point im convinced they designed the controllers to piss me off. They design them to fail to see a new controller. It's to the point the best buy guy and i are great friends now because approximately every 8 months im buying a new controller. I only use the controller a total of 4hrs a week.
I managed to fix the LB issue with glue as described in this video, and fixed some pretty bad left analog stick drift with the help of “How To X”s video “7 methods to fix analog stick drift”, methods 5 and 6. The key to fixing analog stick drift is compressed air, plenty of isopropyl alcohol applied with a cotton swab. The videos were super helpful. Hopefully you held on to your broken controllers and can repair them relatively easily!
after an intense halo infinite sesh my left bumper started getting softer and less responsive until it stopped working entirely, and its the exact same thing that you shown in your video, they should make those more like thicker rods instead of frail plastic toothpicks
Thanks for making this and really clear instructions. Did this with superglue but it quickly broke again so re-did it with two part epoxy, so far so good. Those anti tamper torx screws are a PITA but I did (just) mange to use standard torx bit.
Okay there is a hack for the security/tamper proof hex screw, you just use a mini/micro flat tip screwdriver. I opened my controller up and sure enough one piece of plastic was broken completely off and the other was cracked. I think I might try using the 'permanent' lock tight because I've always had problems using crazy glue with moving parts, it doesn't seem to last and weakens or becomes dry and brittle.
The video was brilliantly clear. I had a go with a replacement bumper and all seemed well. However when I replaced the batteries no light or start up on the controller. Any suggestions?
I guess you fixed it by now? Check if when assembling the controller, the two battery plates pass through the space and did not stay inside the controller
This video was so helpful and really well explained. Both my left and right button was starting to not register and when I opened it I seen the plastic was cracked on both sides so I got a new one for 8 euro and sorted thanks alot mate I appreciate it
Thank you so much for this. I was getting ready to buy my 3rd controller, and I haven't thrown or dropped this last one. I'm just really rough on bumpers when I'm playing any souls game. Again, thanks a ton! You have a like and a sub from me!
Mine the LB plastic tip broke after 3 and a half years of use, found the parts on aliexpress for about 3 USD and this video helped me a lot to replace them. Thanks!
I have never thrown or dropped my controller but i do rage squeeze it which usually sends the battery compartment cover flying and battery spilling out. In this case though, i blame assassins creed odyssey for my over use of the quick strike button which i spam whenever times slowed. Going after bounty hunters well above my rank requires probably 500 hits per enemy. I try to avoid arrows and abilities to test myself, guess I was testing microsofts engineering as well.
@@JoeBleeps I managed to glue the pin back using super glue and the spray, we call it CA or superglue and kicker here in US. Most all hobby stores carry it, for anyone looking.
Thanks, this vid was very helpful. In my case the part that pushes the button was broken off probbably from mashing LB for clutch in racing games and missiles in war thunder. I got stuck on a Cyberpunk 2077 mission where i couldn't progress with no LB so I glued it back on.
@@JoeBleeps I think the reason it breaks is most players hold the game pad in a way that makes them push bumpers on the outer parts away from the part that clicks the button. The effect from that is unnecesary sideways pressure put on the plastic part and it breaks
I didn't have any strong glue, so eventully put a piece of popsicle stick in the hole without gluing. Shaved the popsicle stick down a bit more so it is loose, but works okay.
I have this problem haven tried it yet cuz im not home but will be back. Home tommorow to try it hope it works and thanks for the tutorial you earned your self along with mine many subs :)
There are ways to work around it like snapping off the little pin inside the screws or getting a flat head screwdriver to wedge into the screw but as with most things, I would always recommending the proper tools for a job. It does mean waiting but they can be bought cheaply and will result in way less frustration.
Check inside the battery compartment. It's easy to reassemble and accidentally trap the battery contacts inside. They need to slide through a small gap in the rear shell.
Thanks for the video ! Very professional. Im buying my 10th set of new bumpers , because they always break of. It's a scam. I tried glueing it once but it broke off again. Any tips on how I make them stronger ?
My only experience is with using this glue. If you use the super glue with the accelerator spray and then trim it, it works pretty well but it does seem to be a design problem more than anything
My LB and RB are still working normally, but my LB is waay more "clickier" than my RB, i think they always were like that, but since i dropped my controller on my carpet i started to notice it way more, could it be that it broke something? maybe something is stuck? it's still under warranty so i don't want to open it, but it's not an issue worthy of sending it back
@@GerardoValdez22 not if they seem to be okay. Did those two wires in the middle get disconnected? They are tricky to clip back down properly in my experience
You're welcome. I think it's particularly useful when you haven't removed them before and you're unsure where exactly the clips are or how much pressure to apply
i just bought a lot of 19 broken controllers and half of them has this problem which indicates a design flaw. i wouldn't try to glue it. no glue is stronger than an intact part and it cost 1$ on aliexpress so better to replace the part. in both cases it's a temporary fix, im thinking of a more permanent fix to replace the buttons with a longer style push button and remove that peg entirely.
Hi I watched your videos their great. So I want to tell you that My Xbox series s controller’s LB bumper is broken because it fell on the floor quite a lot and when I turn on my Xbox and go to home page the sqaure arrow wouldn’t work when I click on the LB bumper one time but when I do click on the LB bumper button multiple times then the sqaure arrow would work but it would stutter so is there a way to fix my LB button on the controller? Also would you make a video on this as well?
I’m currently having the opposite of my bumper not working, it’s constantly clicking, almost like a ‘phantom click’, even though it isn’t being pressed down. Not sure if you’ll see this but if you can I’d love some advice on how I might be able to fix it.
Sounds like there might be something wedged between the bumper and the button inside. Best option is to open it up following the guidance in my video and just investigate what's happening in there.
I bought a brand new gen9 gamepad 3 days ago. I especially play fifa. For a day now, my RB button has started to make less noise than the LB button. Is this normal? The RB button was noisy on the first day, but now it makes less noise than the LB button.
The noise is often as the button hits the shell after pressing. There are stickers inside to dampen it, maybe the sticker placement is a little off, I've had that before
Haha, also do you know anywhere I could buy just the back to a controller (the bite you heat up and take off). We tried taking one apart a few years ago but lost the backs somewhere..
When I get to actually taking off the white part of the bumber it just doesn’t come off. In the vid you said there is a clip that is easy to disassemble but mine doesn’t come off. Any help
Just got 2 replacement bumper pieces from amazon but they are useless as the rb jams. Trying one from ebay instead. I tried superglue first time but the pressure needed to press the button was noticeably different. It broke in about 15 minutes anyway.

Thank you so much! took about 10 minutes to fix my bumper which had the exact same problem! Only useful vid ive found
@@jacobsante6210 thank you, really glad to hear that!
After commenting on your Instagram post a couple weeks back I finally got around to trying this.
Such a great video that made it really clear how the controller comes apart, and the hair dryer trick really does the job!
Two controllers with broken bumpers are fully functional again. Thanks for your help 😁
That's so great to hear! I'm really happy to have helped 😄
@@ulysses_757 the cheap components inside are really cheeky when they charge so much
I managed to fix the LB issue with glue as described in this video, and fixed some pretty bad left analog stick drift with the help of “How To X”s video “7 methods to fix analog stick drift”, methods 5 and 6.
There's no reason why they should be so thin! Weird design decision
Great video Joe.. Concise and well presented .. Hail TH-cam ! How did we ever survive without it ?
I've learned so much from this platform!
Thanks for making this and really clear instructions. Did this with superglue but it quickly broke again so re-did it with two part epoxy, so far so good. Those anti tamper torx screws are a PITA but I did (just) mange to use standard torx bit.
They are a nuisance aren't they! And getting those plastic caps off is so tricky. But all better than spending out on a new controller!
took a while to find a video that actually helped me 😭
@@guhgoh I hope this one was useful!
Glue wouldn't hold, got frustrated, gave up and purchased new bumpers. 2 for $10 on Amazon with sexy tools.
I used this to fix the same problem. Thanks for the guide!
Excellent! Thanks for the feedback and congrats!
Thanks so much, I fixed my controller using a replacement bumper strip, worked like a charm 👍🏼
Fantastic!
Thank you! The left bumper also broke on mine.. I just glued the broken piece back on and it's clicking again!
Congratulations!
Thanks a lot bro ! literally the same issue , was having trouble getting the screws off without the military one . But in the end fixed it .
@@Bhalke42 the screws and those two plastic covers are very tricky
Any idea what to do if the tactile switch doesn’t click anymore?
thanks for the great explanation... I have a question, do you recommend buying a series x or s controller or go for an elite series?
The video was brilliantly clear. I had a go with a replacement bumper and all seemed well. However when I replaced the batteries no light or start up on the controller. Any suggestions?
I guess you fixed it by now? Check if when assembling the controller, the two battery plates pass through the space and did not stay inside the controller
As @thiagomotta777 said here, and I've done this before, make sure the battery tabs aren't trapped inside the shell
Man, that was EXACTLY the issue I had with mine! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this. i was able to fix it myself
This video was so helpful and really well explained. Both my left and right button was starting to not register and when I opened it I seen the plastic was cracked on both sides so I got a new one for 8 euro and sorted thanks alot mate I appreciate it
Glad you got it fixed! Thanks for the kind words
Thanks!
I'm glad you managed to fix it!
Thanks man!! I literally had this same problem on my lb, thanks to you I fixed it!!!! I hope it doesn't break again though 😅
Thanks for the video! After reassembly my LT and RT do not work anymore. Any idea?
@@Keller12345-b I've not had this happen but I would be tempted to open it back up and make sure everything is reconnected properly
Yes, the rage squeeze is real haha
@@JoeBleeps I managed to glue the pin back using super glue and the spray, we call it CA or superglue and kicker here in US. Most all hobby stores carry it, for anyone looking.
@@ChrisHarmon1 glad you got it fixed!
Thanks! That was exactly my problem! I've used glue on the same broken part and it worked!
Fantastic! Well done
Video is a year old but holy shit is it in the top 10 most helpful videos of all time
Quality video, just done this,
Ordered a £3 button arm on eBay incase the glue fails
Probably a wise move!
I always mash my bumpers playing rocket league thanks for the helpful tutorial will save me a lot of money sending them in to get repaired
Good to learn a useful new skill!
Perfect video, whether you're 14 or 44 years old. Cheers!
Thanks!
Thanks, this vid was very helpful. In my case the part that pushes the button was broken off probbably from mashing LB for clutch in racing games and missiles in war thunder. I got stuck on a Cyberpunk 2077 mission where i couldn't progress with no LB so I glued it back on.
I'm glad it was helpful! Seems to be a very delicate part
@@JoeBleeps I think the reason it breaks is most players hold the game pad in a way that makes them push bumpers on the outer parts away from the part that clicks the button. The effect from that is unnecesary sideways pressure put on the plastic part and it breaks
@@kompos8144 amazing that these things reach production without weaknesses being picked up
i just breake the rb button from the bumper bridge and igluded the broken piece then put it back together and it worked nicely without any assembly
Excellent!
I didn't have any strong glue, so eventully put a piece of popsicle stick in the hole without gluing. Shaved the popsicle stick down a bit more so it is loose, but works okay.
Love a bit of effective improvising!
Thanks mate! Great video, helped me fix my son's controller, very clear & simple instructions
Really glad to hear that!
I have this problem haven tried it yet cuz im not home but will be back. Home tommorow to try it hope it works and thanks for the tutorial you earned your self along with mine many subs :)
Thank you very much for your support!
Are there other items that you can use as a screwdriver to dissemble the controller if you don't have it?
There are ways to work around it like snapping off the little pin inside the screws or getting a flat head screwdriver to wedge into the screw but as with most things, I would always recommending the proper tools for a job. It does mean waiting but they can be bought cheaply and will result in way less frustration.
Hey Joe, my controller won't power on after replacing the bumper panel with the shoulder buttons and reassembling it! Any advice?
Check inside the battery compartment. It's easy to reassemble and accidentally trap the battery contacts inside. They need to slide through a small gap in the rear shell.
Thanks for the video ! Very professional. Im buying my 10th set of new bumpers , because they always break of. It's a scam. I tried glueing it once but it broke off again. Any tips on how I make them stronger ?
My only experience is with using this glue. If you use the super glue with the accelerator spray and then trim it, it works pretty well but it does seem to be a design problem more than anything
My LB and RB are still working normally, but my LB is waay more "clickier" than my RB, i think they always were like that, but since i dropped my controller on my carpet i started to notice it way more, could it be that it broke something? maybe something is stuck? it's still under warranty so i don't want to open it, but it's not an issue worthy of sending it back
@@brunogamesbr1 maybe something is cracked inside but not fully broken yet? You'd have to open it to know for sure
thank you. this helped me take my controller apparat top repair it
the button for the bumper switch broke off and i glued it back on
Well done! I hope it lasts.
@@JoeBleeps at least until i sell it back to game stop. i used tamiya extra thin
Having trouble removing bumper strips lol tcant seem to maneuver around the hooks that they are clipped onto
Just be patient, there are clips in the middle as well as the ends
@@JoeBleeps appreciate the comment back i got it lol i was taking a good bumper strip off a bad controller to put onto a good one
Thank you man had the same problem I use super glue and after some tries it works perfectly
Great to hear!
Thanks for the excellent and detailed video! I have the same exact problem. Buuut after assembly the control stop vibrating 😢 any suggestions ?
Check that the wires connecting the rumble motor haven't been pinched or damaged first
@@JoeBleeps the wires seem fine :( you think I should disconnect the wires and weld it again?
@@GerardoValdez22 not if they seem to be okay. Did those two wires in the middle get disconnected? They are tricky to clip back down properly in my experience
thank you for heat gun trick,
it make more easy to open the left & right side plastic
You're welcome. I think it's particularly useful when you haven't removed them before and you're unsure where exactly the clips are or how much pressure to apply
Perfect video I had to replace that same exact part for the little break
I hope it helped you fix it!
i just bought a lot of 19 broken controllers and half of them has this problem which indicates a design flaw. i wouldn't try to glue it. no glue is stronger than an intact part and it cost 1$ on aliexpress so better to replace the part. in both cases it's a temporary fix, im thinking of a more permanent fix to replace the buttons with a longer style push button and remove that peg entirely.
That's a good idea. And I think you've just as much chance of failure with a well-glued original part as you do with a cheap third party replacement
thx very usefull i fixed it with myself and cleaned by just watching this tutorial
@@MumtazSyed-kf8qm oh I see. As in replacing the button itself? As with most of these things if I ever end up needing to do it, I'll make a video
There are stickers inside to dampen it, maybe the sticker placement is a little off, I've had that before
I’ve done it all but after reassembling it won’t turn on (I’ve put batteries in) this has happened twice.. do you know why?
Nevermind.. hadn’t put the metal conductor things through the hole meaning the batteries weren’t connected to the controller properly lol
@@nemoandclem2584 I made exactly the same mistake when I did the green shell mod. Easily done!
Haha, also do you know anywhere I could buy just the back to a controller (the bite you heat up and take off). We tried taking one apart a few years ago but lost the backs somewhere..
@@nemoandclem2584 so far as I know you'd need to get the whole shell. There are some nice ones out there though, I love the clear green one I got
Where do i get a bumper made with better materials? I'm tired of this issue, i've replaced this part several times...
@@xBrugal I don't know but there is definitely a gap in the market for this. Maybe even a metal part
You’re a lifesaver 🙏🏻
Hope it helped!
I have this exact problem with 2 controllers can you send me the link for the screwdriver?
You need a T8H security bit and a T6 bit
@@JoeBleeps thanks
When I get to actually taking off the white part of the bumber it just doesn’t come off. In the vid you said there is a clip that is easy to disassemble but mine doesn’t come off. Any help
If I remember rightly the first part has a clip in the middle that needs lifting to remove, then the remaining part is clipped at the ends
Just got 2 replacement bumper pieces from amazon but they are useless as the rb jams. Trying one from ebay instead. I tried superglue first time but the pressure needed to press the button was noticeably different. It broke in about 15 minutes anyway.
