I have SR Model 21386 with the Briggs 163 cc engine. I also run a Honda self propelled with the 170 cc engine. If Model 21386 had dual blades it would be close to being 1:1 with the Honda. The main difference being that when the Personal Pace handle is disengaged, I have to push three steps forward before it actually disengages. This same Toro model series which came with the Honda engine is actually the premium version.
The model you have has the Toro proprietary OEM engine either built in-house by Toro or it may have been one of the engines designed by Lawnboy which Toro acquired. Lawnboy used to make a 2-cycle self propelled lawnmower with the cast aluminum deck.
I'll never give up personal pace. Love it.

Hi just bought my daughter that very same mower, a little while back for her new house. I had to use it for the 1st time and was very impressed. Love the blade stop when changing the bag and not having grass shoot out in my face.

Just purchased the one with the toro engine, without blade stop. Got it home and did two passes to take a little bit off my lawn. Then did one pass on my neighbors over grown yard. Let me tell you I'm very impressed. No clumps no bogging down hell it even stripped good. We'll worth the money. Before I made the purchase I was going to get a used recycler but decided to treat myself to a new 2020 super. So far no regrets I'm tempted to cut my hole lawn tomorrow.
I have had this mower for a month or two now. I love this mower and watching my neighbors be jealous.
Big Toro fan here. Would love to run this or Timemaster but my existing 21” Recyclers will never quit!

I learned to mow with a John Deere 14SB. It still runs today.
My twenty year old super recycler still runs great and still starts on the first or second pull.
I push a 1991 cast aluminum Toro Recycler(pre-Super) with Suzuki 2 cycle motor and it starts with only a half pull from cold. This is coming from a Honda guy that has been driving Hondas for 24yrs. My Honda HRX 217 is now for sale.

Bought the Honda engine super recycler a couple days ago. I havent cut a blade of grass with it yet but im already in love with it!
I bought one this spring. A neighbor bought a Honda, the toro mulches better. My neighbor regrets the Honda. As with any brand mower I have used it cuts way better bagging.
I have an 18 year old Toro personal pace recycler and use mostly side discharge. Practically no problems in 18 years, amazing and powerful.
I have sent that one to my rental house for use and have just purchased this mower with Briggs engine and am excited about firing it up but it is 30 degrees outside now. By the way, french press coffee is the best. My $30.00 french press replaced my $400.00 drip pot. Just sayin.
It looks great but my 10+ year old Snapper has single point height adjustment and I absolutely love that. I can't understand why more mowers don't have that.
Jake since you have blade stop you don't have the wings or ACCELERATOR on your mower do you think not having this affects the mulching or are you mainly bagging?

The blade stop, I am sold! I can only guess it will work great when you change the bag and with the blade stopping, it will not blow grass all of the place while changing the bag. Thanks for the video!
I keep seeing those at my local lawn shop, I love the paint scheme I’m gonna own one eventually. Right now I have a recycler personal pace with electric start about 4 yrs old so I don’t NEED one but I want one. Lol

Nice review Jake. Looks like toro is on a mission to get their product out thru lawn care nuts like us. I'm a toro girl already. Love my timemaster and 21" recycler. Used the 21" yesterday to lay some stripes as it has a check mate roller on it.

Great video! I have a Super Recycler from approx 1994 that still runs great. If I didn't have a TimeMaster I would have a Super Recycler. I will never own a mower that does not have blade stop, that is a must have for me.
I push a 1991(30yrs old!) cast aluminum Toro Recycler(pre-Super) with Suzuki 2 cycle motor. It starts from cold with only a half pull and the cut blows my Honda HRX217 away. I just replaced the blade clutch and I'm thinking this machine is good for another decade.
One thing no reviewer that I have seen has mentioned is how great this Personal Pace is for people with shoulder or back problems such as myself...I still wanted the exercise of walking vs. a riding mower,, my old push mower was killing my back from pushing the weight of the mower, with the Personal Pace your just holding the handle...its awesome! Also I like that you can lock the handle straight up and tilt the mower back for easy cleaning with the hose..
I have a Toro commercial recycler with 2 stroke Suzuki 5.5 I bought in June of 2002 ,grease it , service the airfilter change blades that's it. Keeps on going. When it dies, going to get another commercial recycler!
Just wondering if you knew that this is the only Toro Super Recycler (20383) that does not use the "accelerator " on the blade which is part of the Super Recycler system.
Blade clutch models do not have the accelerator. I have a cast aluminum 1991 Recycler(pre-super recycler) with commercial Suzuki 2 Cycle motor and it does not have the accelerator, but it has 4 kickers + the mulch plug kicker. Best mulcher I have ever used. My Honda HRX 217 can not compete with it.

Was torn between this and the Honda HRX 217. Ultimately I went with the Honda because it has 200CCvs the Toro 160cc. Wish they would have used more powerful engine. For the same price as Honda it's hard to justify such a smaller engine

If Toro did better marketing on the SS, instead of the standard Recycler, Honda would have been in trouble. I know I own a SS & the HRX. JUST SAYING!

I just bought the 60v Super recycler. Unfortunately it hasn't rained since a few days before I mowed the lawn with my weed eater and that was 5 days ago, so waiting for rain, so the grass will grow, so I can mowe.
Like many early-model Toro fans, I have always preferred the aluminum-decked Toros simply because they are quiet and well-built with a quality cut like no other (my older '80s models and my '94 Super Pro Recycler II are still in great shape after 26+yrs). Still, these more recent models are a good bargain to be had without having to hunt-down those old beasts of yore... I would definitely purchase one if my classics were not most reliable and always ready.
You'll find a 2-in-1 cast aluminum deck on Toro's 2022 60-volt flagship, the 21568, available this spring.
@@PaulStregevsky Yes, I saw it in a couple of YT videos being showed by reps, but I have never preferred battery-powered tools for some reason. I have many Toro 21" mowers in excellent condition, the best models they ever made.

Picked up the 21387 - 190cc Briggs - push button start - smart stow. Checked all the boxes for me. I dont need the smart stow but it makes good cleaning and blade removal (for sharpening) a snap.
How do you like it so far i want to pick one up but the reviews are 95% of people having problems out of the box

Thanks for the great review, Jake! I also appreciate your 60v recycler review. After a lot of research and in part because of this video, I’m seriously considering this mower (without blade stop, just can’t cough up the extra $200). Does it leave a line of clumps/clippings behind one side of the mower? I’ve seen some people say it does, which is concerning because I have very thick cool season grass.
There no clump troubles to worry about unless you're cutting extremely overgrown turf. Slight clumps if that. Other than that, all good there 👍💯
Hey Jake. Have you used the Honda HRX series mower? The Model I have is HRX217VKA. It is Honda's top of the line 21 inch model as well? If you have, can you compare the cut quality, etc. between them?
I'm waiting for toro to put blade stop and a honda engine on the super recycler. Maybe next year.
I'm sure they've done it. I just got the one with the Toro engine.

In the Toro Walk Power catalog, it says that the Blade Stop is standard on Super Recycler model 21383.
The Honda engines are more difficult to work on than the Toro engine. They have a lot of valve problems which require complete disassembly of the engine.
You should run a timemaster!

The smart stow is junk. It has a fuel delivery problem that no one can figure out. I think its the carb. But 80% of them try to stall on every bump or wont restart after 30 mins. Im returning the second "stow and go" and getting that toro engine

Nice video. Do you plan on getting a 30 inch timemaster at some point. I have one from 2013 that literally just died after 7 years of heavy use.
Those wedges are an interesting design idea. I wonder if they could be added to other lawn mowers? BTW, I drink Community Coffee, Dark Roast

Did you have to second pass to try to stay within the 1/3 rule?? 54” time cutter too dang bro gotta commercial grade mower to boot. Sweet
This mower is the top of the line so about $750 at your local dealer. Cut quality is great here. Little to no clumps. Always double cut when overgrown.
I noticed your Super Recycler does not have the "Accelerator" on the blade. Is that something Toro leaves off the Blade Clutch models?
How is the toro engine treating you. My local dealer says Honda engine model is out of stock and only has one in stock with the toro engine.
How would this Toro stand up to my 1997 Snapper HiVac 21, with 190cc 6.5HP B&S Quantum engine? Yeah she’s a cutting beast from the past.
I would love to race your Toro for pink slips, but would feel quilty taking your mower.

I'm sure you're just following the 1/3 rule, but I think your backyard is still too high after you cut it.
Is that because you didn't want to take more off at once since it was so high, or is it because of the type of grass it is that it shouldn't be cut much lower?
Just curious. I mow mine at 2.5 inches and cut every 3 days. I love the look of a short lawn.
I have customers that prefer theirs to be mowed at 4" or even 4.5" and it always irritates me for some reason 🤭😂
I respect your opinion but I like my backyard tall. Tolerates the heat better.

Would anyone happen to know how this model (21383) would compare to the 21387 model?
I have the 21387 and it has the biggest engine option but does not have the Blade Stop feature, so it shuts off each time you release the handle.

Jake has been taking notes, and it definitely is showing.
I've had my super recycler for just half a season and it wont start anymore. It ran fine the first couple of months. Then it would start and stutter then just wouldn't start anymore. Suggestions on fixing it? Anyone else dealing with these issues?

Don’t agree, mine is good, but my 13 year old Toro SS is much easier to use than the HRX.

Love the passion Jake! Very thorough in depth review. My Honda HRX217HXA is almost as old as you and is not showing signs of giving up but if it was I’d definitely give this mower a look! And Btw you really should indulge your love coffee and learn proper brewing techniques (aka don’t buy preground coffee, get yourself a real quality grinder and make sure whatever method you are using that your water temp is correct). And finally your experience at making videos is really showing. You are really great at it! Cheers buddy and have a great Sunday!!

Fred's Garage You can get these with the Toro branded engine (a Chinese unit similar in design to the Honda GCV series), a Honda GCV160, or a Briggs. Some features differ depending on engine choice.
