And while some players may be putting in games on soloq, I really don't think that asking for 21 games of CQ per week will induce burnout... As DL says that's literally 3 games / 2 hours a day. The idea of playing the game over the internet with randoms as being the same as practicing with 5 players in comms and on the same page being equal never made sense to me. Solo queue is basically there to practice mechanics, you can't practice rotations, ward control, zone control, 2-3 man timed dives, coordinating efforts across the map using communication, which, is weirdly what a lot of pro teams NEED to develop. They should almost NEVER play solo queue imo. Should almost always be playing with your teammates in comms and practicing together. Franchising is both the best and worst thing that happened to the League. Big investors means Orgs need to have some sense of stability. More money and less competition among players (in so much as roster swaps) means players have more money to spend and less fear of relegation or replacement. Even with all the swaps going on in the League, now you NEED to be able to justify it and say the person youre getting is gonna be better than the one you have. In the Wild West days, anybody could get replaced by the #1 ranked solo queue player if they werent putting up numbers. Now, its about brand recognition. Im happy the League has expanded in the ways it has but we still have a long way to go.

Just drastically different cultures when it comes to E-sports. The level of work and dedication in Korean/Chinese E-sports is similar to how American high school/college athletes approach traditional sports. Insane additional effort outside of what is "expected" because you know that's what makes the difference (and everyone else is pushing themselves). Let's be honest, in NA and EU you start playing games and very rarely consider it a viable career choice unless you find yourself at relatively high ranks in competitive games. Even then the extra push to "make it" is risky and can end up ruining the game you used to enjoy. However, In Korea for example, the culture is SO different. Gaming is a defined and viable career path with so many opportunities. The classic asian sterotype of parents frowning upon gaming is fading away as it's impossible not see the potential benefits of allowing your child to try and excel in gaming. We're seeing more and more college scholarships for e-sports and just a greater infrastructure in general for talent development. In the US, E-sports is just catching up to its tranditonal counterparts in terms of really taking it seriously.
Also another side point, why would the players bother grinding so many extra hours of solo queue if there's no obligation? They need to have some sort of life as well to avoid having the bodies of 50 years olds in the their mid 20s. The same way NFL players experience a multitude of head trauma induced psychiatric issues, E-sports players (in LCK and LPL especially) are getting more RSI in their wrists, issues with general mobility (weak legs) and obvious metabolic issues stemming from poor diets.
I'm sure they'll figure out a way for NA players to get more practice in without the deleterious health consequences that come with the territory, but until then, I wouldn't be so quick to judge.

  • @AONTrappy
    @AONTrappy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Champions queue is just a temporary solution that does not really do much and I would wager that 'soloq' has a more natural practice curve for each player. You gotta be in amateur/prolevel to even get invited to play so its really just an echo chamber of sorts at some point when it comes to practice. You don't really have the natural X factors that a true soloq environment has, no innovation, and no new people. You actually need a full on solution such as lower ping for all soloq or make a super server like China that filters out/produces 'new' players. Now you factor in some BS tinfoil hat theories such as not showing strategy and the like into the mix and it just fks everything up. Oh right and then you add in the cultural differences and varying practice strategies of each player and you end up with nothing. In a perfect world with champq where everyone plays all the time it would work, but it ain't. Leave NA in the dumpster until they either do something or RIOTNA implements a full-scale restructure.

youre literally playing a fucking game for a living. I understand people get burnt and tired of playing 24/7 but literally play the fucking game XD. Its called getting complacent and thats why NA will always be in the doghouse when it comes to being considered a "competitive" region. I dont know why you wouldnt want to play more to improve.

if you're collecting a paycheck and can still perform at high levels without playing those extra games, would you? do you think playing extra games necessarily = getting better? maybe, but with shit returns. imagine how numb they are to playing norms and need something more mentally uncomfortable/active lol.
that champions queue stat also doesn't show internal games/practice, vod reviews, individiual performance etc.

@@nealkim4166 Can’t say as no one here has been in that position, but with a game that’s constantly evolving with new items/ concepts you think it’d be wise to house a team of players who are constantly on the bottom of LCS not taking advantage of something like SQ? It just clearly shows atleast IMO the motivation of teams who are at the top vs ones who aren’t when it comes to the stats shown from SQ games. I get being burnt out, everyday people are the same with everyday jobs. But their is a clear discrepancy in work ethic when it comes to improving vs LCS AND LCK for example.

obviously most commenters here have never worked a full time, salaried job in their lives before. those players play league as a job. just because you can have fun at your job, doesn't make it not a job... there is a thing called work-life balance. listen from 5:13 to 5:22 where DL actually calls it a "long day of scrims", where players want to relax afterwards and have a life. if you work at a company and are salaried (e.g., making 100k+, 40 hrs/week) and your boss tells you to work 20+ more hours (~ 20 games of champions queue) without additional compensation, you are actually brainless if you can't see what's wrong with that.
lastly, playing more/less games on champions queue offers no context. how much sleep are players sacrificing, how intense/long are scrim sessions between teams with players who grind many champions queue games vs not... there is always a trade-off. lastly, at their skill level, playing additional games becomes more of a passive means of learning new ideas/mechanics. not to mention there is diminishing returns of improving at their skill level, that it's more important that their time is used smarter. i wanna ask everyone to view this situation as if they were those pro players, but as workers in a normal company; that is, if it were you being asked to spend extra time at work without additional compensation, and your intent for working is to take care of you and your family, there's no way you'd continually do that long term.

You cant realy look at this as a job. It is more closely related to athletes, and to become the best you have to sacrifice some free time to that.
Athletes of what i know is either training in some way or resting and looking at where they can improve. Ofc they also put in some effort to have some work life balance, but the work to be the best still has to be prioritized.

I mean yes, that's all fine, but players know exactly what they are signing up for when they are hired as pro players. Just like mentioned in the video, almost certainly many teams have certain soloq requirements written into contracts. You're asking people to compare it to a normal job, but that's not an equal comparison.
The fact is being a pro isn't a normal job at all. It requires way more dedication, drive and focus than the average 40 hour work day. Pro's are compensated so well, because they are expected to do these things which lead them to be the best.
It's this exact same way in every professional sport out there. People playing in professional sports have the exact same obligations to meet. They spend hours upon hours conditioning themselves, practicing and playing. They don't complain because that's what's expected to stay at the top, exactly like in league.
It's the exact same way in a lot of actual professional jobs as well. Doctors easily work an insane amount of hours, and their work doesn't stop when they get home. They must constantly review, and keep up to date on their own personal time. But that is exactly the reason they are compensated so well.
All in all, being a professional is not the same as what you compare to be a normal 9-5. There are a dozens of jobs out there that require insane hours and this is one of them. If you can't handle it, then being a professional league player isn't for you.

bro this isnt a factory job this is a competitive esport, no one is forcing people to play games for less pay its about who wants it more and who is willing to put in the effort, these guys are contracted for a team but dont confuse that as if its entirely different from solo sports like tennis, the people who play more will be better and if you want a balanced life with plenty of free time thats fine but youll never compete with the best at anything

lmao 20 hours is a bit extreme but regular jobs have overtimes too and you can easily play for 10-12 hours a day esp. if you consider that between matches they're probably waiting in queue for a good portion.
