DIY Kayak Shade Top and Night Fishing Rig

  • How does it handle in the wind?
    During my test run I had 10 - 15 mph gusts winds. When the wind was behind me I put the shade in the vertical position and it acted like a sail. When I was heading into the wind, I had a gust knock it backwards. I then twisted it so the short end faced the wind and had no problems. Finding the right balance of friction is the key, you want it hard to twist and pivot, but not too hard - that it's impossible to do.
    What is the shade made of?
    I brought the shade frame into my local banner print shop and they used a thin white vinyl. They added some grommets and I zip-tied them in.
    ----------------------
    To beat this Texas heat during the summer months I usually go night fishing. My last few night trips have produced a lot of smaller fish - so I wanted to brave the heat and get after some bigger game. I started researching kayak shades online and found some awesome ideas online and on forums. I like the "Flintstone" style shades that I was seeing mounted to flush mount rod holders... so I went to building it. I used an umbrella on my other KC Kayak and what I liked about it was that I could rotate it to cover me no matter what direction I was facing.
    I came up with a way to make the shade tilt and pivot from another build I did for a pivoting spotlight to use at night.
    The frame is pretty clear cut, frame it out to your specifications using 1-1/4 inch PVC pipe. For the tilting mechanism you will need a 2 inch T, (2) 1 1/4 inch to 2 inch bushings, a 3/4 inch to 2 inch bushing and (2) pieces of 1-1/4 inch PVC. This will allow your shade top to tilt. The 3/4 to 2 inch bushing in the center of the T will allow you a full 360 degree swivel.
    Frame out your shade top using 1/2 inch pipes and cover with vinyl. Have grommets installed and simply zip tie it down.
    For the night set-up, I used the same mechanics. Instead of installing the shade top, I popped in a 1-1/2 coupling and jammed the spotlight handle into it. Added some velcro around the coupling for a snug fit into the center of the 2 inch T.

    Another great video Rex. I'm a subscriber of yours and definitely appreciate what you do and share. I'll need to study this more so I can modify the plan for my Ascend 128T. I plan to make mine modifiable to be a duck blind also. Appreciate the info and you sharing. High points 1) break dancing at the opening and 2) firing the filming crew at the end! Keep up the great work.

    Outstanding! You come up with some great ideas. I plan to make one, as well. I'm not a Yakker,. I ride a 2-man Bass Hunter pontoon boat, so mine will be a modification of your idea. Keep it up!

    You are one of the most clever individuals I've seen when it comes to building things with PVC.
    I was wondering how your shade device does with wind?
    It appears that it would act like a sail with much more than a breeze. Possibly moving you in a direction you don't want to go.

      Hey Tommy. The top is made out of standard banner vinyl - with grommets installed. Any banner shop can cut it to size.

      @ReXDeLReY  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What's up Joe. Yeah the seat is cooler. I was trying it out as a seat and standing platform. Works well - but I switched to mounting a comfy boat seat instead. The top is made out of standard banner vinyl - with grommets installed. Any banner shot can cut it to size.
