Country and blues have always been first cousins. Both have a gospel background. As a white kid I grew up with Motown, Elvis and Hank Williams. True soul music.

It's a key motif woven throughout Portuguese folk music (Fado). This is the closest I've heard any English artist come to nailing saudade in their music. Oliver has got soul in his lyrics that's just infectious

Nolan Taylor's "68" is probably my favorite country song I have happened upon from a different artist going down the youtube rabbit hole from "Rich Men North of Richmond." For a recommendation that isn't just Oliver Anthony's other songs(which are also good).
I wouldn’t classify that as country by any means. But country is a very vague term Oliver Anthony is more folk/ bluegrass style than anything. I listened to him because of this comment and I really like his music but it’s more singer song writer/ Americana. He is definitely very authentic as well. Anyways thanks for the rec.

If I had to classify the genre, the closest I can think of is a hybrid of a down-tempo Appalachian bluegrass and blues.

I listen to country music more and more now because it’s humbling and they talk about real things and I can relate to it more and it’s just so beautiful and relaxing to listen to, and I love hearing instruments instead of a studio board ♥️
