    The commentary of this movie is hilarious. Downey stayed in character during the commentary, until he went into "Kirk Lazarus" mode, then he had an Australian accent, then he went into his regular voice when the credits came up. Jack Black was in tears, for that whole thing.

      This is a very good candidate, but I think he made up for M:I 2 wonderfully by bringing in Philip Seymour Hoffman for M:I 3. The only reason 3 is not the best movie in the franchise is that Ghost Protocol came out, and it was the best movie in the franchise. Zoolander. Dodge Ball: A True Underdog Story. Both of these movies are quotable for days, and both are some of Ben Stiller's best work. Jamie Foxx made a comment about it on Joe Rogan's show and made a good point, its easy to point out racist things with celebrities and start the conversation of - was that okay? And the fact is, RDJ is a perfect actor its near impossible to say he made fun of black people since he acted like a black man so well. And its great Alpa Chino was there to f**k with him about it. BUT that does bring up the fact, if RDJ wasn't as good, the backlash would've been huge since another actor prolly would have f**ked up that role so bad.

    Yeah context is extremely important. "Blackface" was offensive because in the past contexts that this term refers to, people depicted black people in a intentionally negative and derogatory manner, this term and the controversy around it seems to somehow have been extended to any context in which a non black individual possess black makeup or face paint in any context with any intention, which makes absolutely no sense.

    • @phishcatt
      @phishcatt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You missed the whole point. He's absolutely doing a blackface in this movie, he has black paint on and acting like a black man, aka blackface. That's the point of his role, to make fun of cardboard blackface characters in old movies. His blackface IS controversial within the movie, as it should be. The message of the movie is not that blackface can be ok in real life, it's exactly the opposite.

    Pandas rely primarily on spatial memory rather than visual memory. Though the panda is often assumed to be docile, it has been known to attack humans, presumably out of irritation rather than aggression. Even in captivity, where pandas are used to being cooed over by humans, they can be dangerous. In 2006, a drunken 28-year-old man by the name of Zhang clambered into the panda enclosure at Beijing Zoo and tried to pet the internee.

    Look up the old school black face and show me the resemblance. This is no worse than white chicks which black people love. The old school version had huge lips and other very offensive parts of the look and were used for horrible reasons. Being able to separate "black face" from something like this shouldnt be that difficult for people but they all want to get upset about something. Then you have the fact historically, actors of all kinds have played many characters different from who they are whether it be the opposite gender (men AND women) or race. And its certainly not just white people. Whether its this country or other countries around the world.

    • @oddnoobian1123
      @oddnoobian1123  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think the difference is that this movie is more about "whitewahing" than actual blackface. Its all about intent and context. This movie ultimately is saying that whitewashing is not ok through comedy and satire. And your right about other cultures like Japanese Kabuki is all male so they tend to stay true to that tradition. The world is more sensitive to these subjects now than we used to be for better or worse. This movie or White Chicks probably couldn't be made in todays social climate.

    • @AAAbatterye2
      @AAAbatterye2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@oddnoobian1123 Talking about whitewashing, isn't is interesting then, if casting for someone like Ariel, a white mermaid is now going to be a black mermaid is praised by a lot of media for diversity, and not considered wrong? And speaking of the little mermaid and that red hair, have you seen how many white, red headed characters have been replaced by blacks? Considering the number of red heads to begin with, it's fairly substantial. And when you bring these questions up with people on the praising diversity side, something they often say "it's not a real person so it doesn't matter." Ok, Black Panther isn't real so if he was white in the next movie there's no problem? You know people would not accept that. And when it is a real person, Anne Boleyn, 2nd wife of Henry VIII, who is in a period film being portrayed by a black woman, what then? I wish we had consistency. If whitewashing is wrong, then blackwashing is wrong etc...
      Anyway, Tropic Thunder is a great movie and I'm happy you liked it, cheers.

      @oddnoobian1123  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@AAAbatterye2 I agree that both ways are wrong but your example of Black Panther doesn't work because he is rooting in being a Black African man. I think Ariel was originally green in the fairy tail, I may be wrong in that, but she is not rooted in being white. If portraying a person that was white irl then they should be played by a white actor and if they were black the actor should be black. This goes for any other race as well imo. Everyone deserves fair and equal representation on the big screen. fictional characters have more wriggle room imo, besides when the race is a part of the character ie, Luke Cage, Black Panther, Storm, Peter Parker, Superman. I prefer them to create different characters than to change existing ones races but that's just me.

And no she's not green, described in the book as having blue eyes, and white skin as clear and soft as a rose petal, surprisingly no red hair though, that's a Disney thing apparently. Also you mentioned race as part of the character and said Peter and Clark but how is being White at all important for being who they are? Dreams, morals, motivations, interests, etc.. where does the I'm White therefore this come into play? I really want to know that perspective because I don't see it. Just like I honestly don't see it for Black Panther either. He could be the adopted one instead of his brother, be any color, still have the same family, raised the same, be the same man he is. He'd still be culturally African, or Wakandan specifically, royalty, athlete, physicist, leader, that's where the character is.

      @@AAAbatterye2 I understand what you mean. Yes, there are other traits that make the characters what they are but from what I understand the intention of black panther's creation was for him to be a Black superhero. He obviously stands for more things than just his skin color but he was created with his skin color in mind. Clark was created in a time where there were no black superheroes that I know of. If they wanted to make a black superman he shouldn't be Clark he should be a different character with similar powers, the same way they did Miles for Spiderman.

    Yes, pandas are docile, they eat bamboo shoots, not meat. Perhaps tugg just PANICKED when he encountered it and what we see (when it really appears to be a bear, not a panda bear,) was what he THOUGHT he saw, in his panic:)

    Loved your reactions! To this day, every single black person I know who has seen this movie not only didn’t get mad at RDJ, they thought his role was the funniest thing ever. I mean RDJ is a white American, playing a white Australian, playing a black American, who at one point is playing an Asian farmer and speaking Mandarin (terribly) 😂

    Gotta give a thumbs up for recognizing the connection between Booty Sweat and Pocari Sweat. Most people miss that. Pocari Sweat is a grapefruit flavored sports drink (like Gatorade) that got it's name due to some Japanese guy not really understanding English when he tried to find a name that reflected its purpose in replacing salts (electrolytes) lost via sweating during strenuous exercise. It's actually pretty good despite the name.

      That's a false equivalence, why would you be offended at white chicks? The Wayans Brothers haven't made a habit out of stealing white actors roles, and white face doesn't have the same history of marginalization that black face does. It's nowhere near as offensive. RDJ pulled it off, but black face is not okay. White face doesn't carry the same punch, by any means because it wasn't used as a tool to hurt people for so many years.

    • @jono8884
      @jono8884 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sfodd1979 I wasn't offended at White Chicks, that is the point, comedy is comedy. Just as Tropic Thunder was a comedy showing the craziness of method actors and the lengths taken - pigment treatment - for the role. Neither movie has anything to do with the traditional use of Black face.

      They have a whole ass conversation in the film about how even method acting and being 100% accurate still doesn’t mean the same thing as a black guy saying or doing things, and that because of the fucked up representation the other actor felt like he had to represent an actual black man somewhere in the film...but sure it was just about acting and not about blackface. What.

  • @rakugothdajjal527

    I honestly don't think the message from RDJ's part is that blackface is fucked up. I think it has more to do with hiring the best person for a role no matter the color. I can't really think of a person that would have played his part better lol.

    The big criticism of this movie (as I recall) was over the 'Simple Jack' theme. They skewered SO many Hollywood tropes, maybe folks just got overloaded.
    I saw this in the theater & coming after the REAL ads & previews, the opening of this movie was the first brilliant satire. It took a while before the audience realized they were watching the actual movie.
    This may be my favorite 'Hollywood being self-aware' comedy ever. No wonder they got so many A-listers to take even minor parts.
