  • ingloriousbettas.com | Re-upload of a favorite! Jim is truly a master of his craft. He maintains many beautiful species of fish, particularly Nothobranchius killifish. And yes, it's a little bit of a chaotic interview because it was during one of our San Francisco Bay Area Killifish Association meetings that Jim was kind enough to host :)

    i'm watching some of your videos again and my god... i watched this one countless times last year or so, when i was super stoked about keeping killifish! seeing this one, as well as many of your own fish room videos was really inspiring to me. always so informative and with such good taste for a certain kind of setup! now i'm keeping tons of killis!

    Wow a true fish master! This was a pleasure to watch. You could do videos with this guy all the time. I especially liked his ideas on Brine shrimp hatching. I think a whole video on that with him would be great!

    What is the tank size for the Australe?
    I've got a male and female striatum, and would like to separate them in between breeding so it's not too hard on them, planning on using the critter keepers but ideally would like to save on space and go as small as fairly possible

    • @Skylrrider
      @Skylrrider  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Another killifish breeder in the club keeps single killies in pickle jars! He also changes water every day though. The smaller the volume, the more water changes you must do to keep them healthy.

      Inglorious Bettas thanks for the reply! I've been using the exo Terra faunarium small, it's 9x6x6 inches (5 litres) with sponge filter for my striatums, but just wanted to check whether that would serve the Australe too :)

    Okay, I've listened to this seven times. At 2:54, while discussing N. guentheri, he says the "substrate, it's a combination of peat moss and coyer".... What the heck is coyer? Great site, by the way.

      Jim answered via e-mail: coir is coconut husk.

    I’m getting 30 Nothobranchius Rachovii killifish (not black just regular) in the mail from eBay, and ik how to care for them but I was just wondering if this guys had a TH-cam channel so I could get some tips?

    Is there a way to purchase eggs from him? Does he have an email? It's always neat to see the passion in the hobby!

    • @Skylrrider
      @Skylrrider  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe you can reach him through the American Killifish Association member database if you are also a member. You can also email me through my website and I can see if I can put you in touch with him if you are interested in a particular fish. I don't think Jim usually sends through the mail though - he mainly sends to shows like I do

    Can you pls explain the concept of adding bleach into brine shrimp hatchery

    • @Skylrrider
      @Skylrrider  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bleach kills off any potentially harmful bacteria. It disappears by the time the eggs hatch, so it's safe to use in between cycles.

  • @datinyone

    do those snails predate on the eggs in the mops?.

    • @Skylrrider
      @Skylrrider  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great question datinyone! I don't know, I can ask Jim next time I see him. I don't add snails to tanks that I want to collect eggs from, but I always have snails once the fry are free swimming. The snails eat any leftover fry food and fry eat the bacteria in the snail poop.

    • @datinyone
      @datinyone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah i saw some snails in with his spawning mops. wondered if i should chuck one or two in with my pairs.. lol..

    Can you do a video where you order some Nothobrantus Foerschi Killifish eggs off of eBay and do vids where you do a weekly log on the fry from egg to adult. N. Foerschi is a beautiful Killifish that is very easy to breed, just add a lot of peat moss to the tank and they'll start laying eggs within days plz do this thank you!

      This was at a Bay Area Killifish Association meeting. It's one of the few times we meet a year and we are full of fish pent up fish conversation. It's not fair to ask everyone to be quiet for the sake of a video. I've stopped filming at these events largely because I want to enjoy myself with everyone, and having a camera in front of my face is a conversation stopper. I'll go back one of these days when it's just Jim and I so I can film a "nicer" version.

      Please do not let negative remarks affect your future video recordings . . . It is at an actual fish meeting & it can't be helped anyhow . . . It is absolutely awesome that Jim uses his engineering degree to enhance his fishkeeping ! ! !
