I wish there were more like you in this sad old world. I'm old enough to be your mother, so don't think I'm getting weird or anything. All the finishing touches are coming along nicely! I love how certain things you’ve found on your travels seemed to have been meant for your new store location. The stained glass window from Mary’s house, the Five Roses sign and I love what you did with the canoe over the counter. A little reminder from your old location which again, looks like it was meant to hang there. Best wishes for a fantastic grand opening! I see myself coming to visit one day down the road. It’s been 27 years since my last visit to Edmonton. Even if it takes me years to find my way up there again, I have no doubt you will be operating a very successful business for many years to come out of this location! WOW store looks amazing.
Alex maybe your neighbour with the large ugly wall would be interested in a painted mural on it. You could find or hold a contest to find a mural and artist to paint on it. Suggest a mural of the period house/structure trees that once occupied the property. Look forward to your opening. Hope to see some store front T shirts.Your side yard through the double doors is a great location for picnic tables for the bus loads of people about to arrive.

I've been following your channel for some time but never commented, just wanted to say I just love your channel and your energy and enthusiasm. My grandfather was an antique dealer and had a massive collection of antique cutlery in the UK so I grew up around antiques, but wasn't super interested but watching your channel has definitely made me appreciate my grandfather's life work more and piqued my interest in antiques!
My grandfather was a antique dealer here in the states. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed I ended up with everything he had. My house is quite full of antiques, and the garage has boxes full of them. Someday I need to unload some of it.
@@stubs1227 Luckily when my grandfather died my aunt took over and spent a long time sorting through everything and auctioned off many pieces and lots so they have hopefully gone to places that will preserve them. I have a few pieces of his that he gave me that I will treasure.

*_This is what family life is all about. I live in Ireland & i drive the same Volkswagen van in your video. I just love the sound & feel of the engine & it still smells as it did when myself & my 8 siblings would pile in with mam & dad, heading of down to visit the relatives for the summer. We still visit our relatives on same farm. We drive the same route, stop at some of the same stores for gas [we always brought our own food..lol]_*
I live in northern Illinois and once a year we drive the same route down to Eastern Tennessee. We make the same stops, and have watched these places evolve into what they are now. It's amazing to look at pictures we took on these trips and to see the changes year after year. 💗

So excited for you and the family. I was in retail for fifty + years, and was also blessed with a ‘good eye’. And not only do you have a splendid ‘good eye ‘, your work ethic rates at the very top of the scale. Your truly amazing, way back I wrote that you business should and would be a tourist draw for the city, - and here you are- new location and the busses are getting ready to roll. Congratulations all your hard work is going to be rewarded. I’m sure it’s just another step towards major success.
Most YT'ers have the screaming hab-dab's if a fan turned up and even though this chap was expected, there have been others who have turned up unannounced that have been treated with civility and kindness. It's just refreshing to see folks on YT who have manners and are genuinely likeable.
I always believe in kindness. If it weren’t for my viewers I wouldn’t have a TH-cam channel after all.
I like your expression "screaming hab-dabs!" I also think there's a big difference between welcoming unexpected visitors/fans when you own a retail business vs. showing up in a TH-camr's "real life" at their home, etc. Not to downplay Alex's patience and kindness.
When I was there last month visiting from Baja California, Mexico, Alex was delightful!!! He invited my friends and I in to take a look around and then included me in one of his TH-cam videos. You're a really great guy, Alex! I am excited for your Grand Opening! Looking good!
Yes, Alex is kind and friendly. He does exactly what a good retail merchant should do, welcome people of any persuasion and treat them as future friends! If I ever get to visit the area, I will be sure to stop by his (And his family's) charming shop. By the way, I could easily see a small brick patio off the side doors with a couple old metal patio sets to sit and chat for a minute!
He’s also pretty new to it. If he gets even more popular, it might be different if he gets someone turning up at night at his home. Please don’t assume a youtuber is a terrible person if they’re upset that someone turns up unexpected at their home. Some are horrible people, but others have had some pretty horrible experiences with people turning up and harassing them because of the parasocial relationship (someone feels they know a famous person well, of course it’s completely one sided and often they really only actually know superficial details). Kindness and civility are amazing qualities, but occasionally people behave in ways that can’t be met with either.
What you need for the basement is a Dehumidifier you probably can find one used or purchase one new for under $150.00 CN?
Your basement will remain musty until the temperature outside gets into the low 30 degrees. After the ground starts to freeze you won't need it until springtime again. Those bags won't even begin put a dent in your musty basement.
I was thinking the same thing about the bags he bought vs. a dehumidifier. He should also buy a hygrometer (they are quite inexpensive) to monitor the indoor relative humidity (RH). If it's above 60 percent, that greatly increases the risk for mold growth. Ideally, the RH should be between 30 percent and 50 percent, if possible. We had mold in our home due to poor drainage in our backyard, and the RH in our closet (attached to our bathroom) reached as high as 75 percent. I was shocked at how much water a dehumidifier pulled out of the air.

I am going to miss that beautiful WW1 painting. Love the stove. Maybe Josh’s Johnny Cash and or Kurt Cobain painting by the guitars? I think all your missing is something red and black flannel checked to go with the great canoe. Josh needs to do your family’s portrait to put somewhere prominent in the store. Love the store.
I think the family portrait is a great idea but have them to dress up in period clothing. There used to be several different places here you could go and dress up like the old west and have your pictures taken. We had done that with several different friends and had a great time with it. We even went with my friend and her mom. One set of pictures we look like very prim and proper ladies but the other picture we're dressed as bar room floozies. LOL We were able to find some old frames to put the pictures in and had a running joke if anybody asked about the pictures we said that they were distant relatives.
I had an old friend that used to say... "Carefully measure it with a ruler, accurately mark it with chalk and then cut it with an axe"

I am doing something similar with two leaded / stained glass transoms ... hanging over the tops of windows as valences. One is special as it comes from my church building where I have attended for about 55 years. ... I am excited for your opening.
The stained glass in it's new home is perfect! I wasn't so keen on the Canoe De
Lumière, until I saw how well it lit the Cashier stand, and yes, it's spot on. You have created a Show Stopping place with this little building; someplace to VISIT not just shop.
For the future, I would suggest an outdoor seating area, where folks can sit and visit or rest after shopping. You could sell bottled drinks and pre-wrapped snacks [no need for health department certification] for your Picnic Area... instead of a Soda Counter. Work a deal with a local Food Truck, and let THEM serve the food, you provide the seating... and when customers are done eating, they tour your shoppe.
This is a potential gold mine with a wealth of opportunities for expansion, diversification, and all of it designed to fulfill what a General Store once provided.
I was thinking the same thing about having an outdoor seating area. Sodas and pre-wrapped snacks is a great idea a vending truck would be great too possibly on the weekends so it would not interfere with weekday traffic. They would have a great view of the little park across the street while they sit and eat. 😀
@@suzannejensen275 Oh, I was thinking Lunch Time service during the week, myself. My hometown in Texas has dedicated an entire park area in the middle of downtown with tables and seating- just for lunch time, and invited Food Trucks to serve as outdoor cafes.
However, I saw the Food Truck pulling in from the back lot, and off the street.
I think it's lovely that one seed of creativity can lead to more.
@@Objective-Observer We have a couple of the food truck courts in the downtown Dallas area and they do very well but for some reason they've tried to put some in cities north of Dallas but they don't seem to stay in business long even if they do have areas to setup for live music along with the variety of food trucks and some serving alcohol there's just too much competition with all the restaurants. I don't know what kind of permits he would have to get to have a food truck on the property.
@@suzannejensen275 In the populated areas, sure I could see Food Trucks struggling; absolutely, competition would prevent them from surviving. Out here in the wilds of West Texas, our new brick and mortar eateries don't survive long. Yes, there is SOME competition, but the brick and mortar cafes do quite well that first quarter, as folks are excited to try the new cafe, but they rarely last much after that. Not even the major Chains do well out here. Our Food Trucks, however, are doing well. No sky high property taxes, and trust me on this, The Concho Valley and the Big Country have astronomically higher property taxes than you.
Alex is like Canadian Willy Wonka in the best way possible.

Bravo! Your store is such a gem. Some customers obviously can't wait till opening day, which shows how valuable your items really are. The skull chandelier is awesome. What a great idea. And the stained glass panel and canoe are inspired. It all works marvellously well.

Something else that's huge is being invited to speak to a college class. That just proves that you have a lot to share and others recognize that. Hi from Missouri! It's always an honor to be asked to speak to a university class. I was asked to join a panel a couple of years ago to talk to students at our local university (University of Central Missouri) about old age. The questions were geared more to what was life like back in ancient times when you were a kid.

My daughter told me about your TH-cam channel and I'm looking forward to watching your Potter house episodes.
That's so cool that you were asked to give a business lecture at your local college. I'm sure that you have a lot of valuable experiences and advise to share.
It sounds like a dream come true to have your shop be a community landmark/ destination, for bus tours.
My husband is a carpenter and has experience, renovating houses with old basements that have the dirt shelf.
He spreads Surf powder detergent, over the bare dirt and it helps take care of the dank, earthy smell.
Plastic bins on heavy duty shelving or wood pallets are great for keeping (seasonal decorations, extra parts, etc.) directly off the cement.
It helps with air flow under and around your stored items.
And if you have any unexpected flooding, it will keep your stuff from getting ruined.
I've seen those multiple plug, power strips, mounted with the power cord running along the top of the wooden rafters.
That way several things can be plugged in without the cord hanging down and it looks nice too.
A few years back, we owned a vintage shop.
It was broken into, two days before Christmas.
It took the thief about 10 seconds, using a screwdriver and hammer to pop the lock.
The locksmith told me that if we had a lock that was a few dollars more, with a safety ring on it, the thief wouldn't have been able to spin the inside around with his screwdriver (like a key).
Make sure you have multiple surveillance cameras.
The business that sat next to me, had cameras and wasn't touched. We viewed their footage, after the break in, and saw the thief.
He stood under one of their camera (at 1:30 a.m. Using the darkness and snowstorm, for cover).
He looked directly into the camera and decided not to break into their establishment.
This was before the doorbell surveillance systems that you can hook up to hear and watch things from another location....
We learned from this experience and put up signs that said,
"No cash or valuables are stored on the premises, overnight."
When we closed for the night, we left the empty cash register tray, sitting upright on our counter, within clear view of the front windows.
We installed motion activated lights inside and outside.
We used clear Christmas lights (on a timer) around the inside windows and the register desk that we left on at night.
It looked pretty and added a measure of security, as well.
I parked where I could get a clear view of my car and kept the parking area, well lit at night.
Please also invest in security bars for any side or back windows.
My husband always met me before closing, so we could handle the end of day money and leave together, for safety.
We were friendly with the other shop keepers by us, and we looked out for each other.
Just some things that I thought to share.

What a great idea Alex could have it set up outside by the door. Several of the places we used to go visit would still have the little General store and they'd always be men sitting outside either playing checkers, Domino's or just sitting there talking and watching the the cars drive by. I cried when they had tore down two of the ones we had visited since we were a child it was so sad because there was so many memories there. Both of them lasted into the 1990s the one in the town I lived in for a little while in the 80s was one of the first buildings in that area it really was an 1800s General Store. I went through the town a few years back I couldn't even find the street I lived on that city is so overgrown now with houses and stores. When I finally found my street it's between 7-Eleven and another store I just thought it was part of the parking lot until I saw the street sign. When I lived there there was only the two main roads and one small housing development with six streets and a small building for the volunteer fire department the rest was still farm land.
I literally could not love this channel anymore than I do!
Everything looks wonderful! You are going to draw crowds from all over. You aren't a "store" ... you are a step back in time. A museum of awesomeness! I could spend hours in there meandering from spot to spot. You and your crew should be very proud of what you have accomplished. ♥

As I said one time before, you are a mover and a shaker. I had no doubt that The store was going to come together. I am from Ohio and sure would love to visit. I grew up in a household of antiques. I can appreciate all that you’ve done. You have vision! Congratulations!
Alex, a few suggestions if you don't mind. That cellar basement. I have a 92 yr old neighbor. She has a cellar basement the neighbors emptied out. One of them got the bright idea to put a gallon of bleach in a 3 gallon pump sprayer and coated her walls from floor to ceiling. They barely got that done and were almost gassed from the chlorine fumes. Unbelievable. They came to me and asked for help. First, you dilute bleach. If I had a 3 gallon pump sprayer, I'd put 2 gallons of water in it and about a cup of bleach. That should be a good enough disinfectant to kill any mold.
Since the damage was already done to my neighbors cellar I went to investigate. From the kitchen I could smell the odors. I told them to keep all those windows open and to get a few fans. I have COPD and I did have an actual quality face mask I could wear. I got my SunJoe electric pressure washer and set it up outside her cellar window. I went down with my mask on and opened the window and they handed me the wand. I sprayed those walls down from top to bottom with the pressure washer. They looked great. I even did her floor. The entire room was probably no bigger than 15 feet by 15 feet or so. I made sure the drain was cleaned and not clogged with anything. The odor diminished quickly as it was all flushed down the walls and down the drain.
I ran out to Lowes and got two gallons of that white KILLZ paint. I had plenty of brushes at my house so I asked the neighbors, since they started the project if they'd paint. Three of them went down a few days later since it was dry as a bone and they knocked that out in just a few hours. Now that lady has a clean dry basement. With all that mold that was down there, the smell was working its way up into her home every time the furnace kicked on. So I told the neighors to make sure the filters were changed and clean. I got the size so I can get her a half a dozen more. Her vent work was tight so it was the odor coming through the filters as the furnace kicked on.
So, after watching your video, I not only thought of that but thought you should get a pressure washer and clean that from top to bottom. DILUTE bleach if you think you have a mold issue so it doesn't blow up when your furnace kicks on. But, after you power wash, you should be able to get a few cans of killz paint and that should keep your cellar tight and dry longterm rather than quick fixes like those bean bags. Should that moldy smell come through your vents, your cardboard products might retain the smell and linger and people would notice when they came in. (wow sorry 4 paragraphs) but I thought you should think long term, pressure wash and paint so future damages are avoidable. I do enjoy your channel very much.

I do believe that is a huge part of why I love your channel you are a well rounded person and it shows. Also raw concrete will always let more humidity pass then sealed concrete as it is a porous material. Painting the basement with concrete paint would help.
You should ware some sort of vintage outfit when running your store especially on the grand opening day

The canoe light was a perfect touch for hanging over the cash register! You definitely want great lighting for making change or inspecting an item that is up for sale to you! My husband looked for all kinds of cheap options for moisture and accompanying smells for our basement. Before painting the walls he hung nylon stockings and panty hose filled with barbeque brickets. He changed them out every 3 to 6 months. They worked until he used a special paint. I lived there 48 years thankfully without the hanging hose for most of them.
Everything is coming along nicely.

Like the little stove in back. I have the same one in my basement. Jotel from Norway. It has a relief on both sides of the Norway coastline & a Viking ship sailing west across the water. Excellent heat choice!

Dehumidifier are a must in any basement.
But you will need to be careful picking the right one. Some you have to constantly empty the collected water. Others can be made to drain outside or in a floor drain.
@@sand3882 I got one that will pump uphill. It is nice not having to dump a bucket.
Dehumidifiers are energy hogs as they are essentially air conditioners. A better solution ( assuming you have eliminated to cause of the water in the basement) is to get a 4" diameter inline fan that picks up air near the floor and exhausts it outdoors just like a dryer vent. You can run it on slow speed continuously or connect it to a humidistat so that it comes on when the humidity level increases. Much cheaper to run and no hassles draining water etc.

One story I hope you told the business class was about starting an online store and then deciding it I was not a good idea. Basically, you are creating an experience for people, and the online store was not central to that. Also, as I have learned in my little business, the online store consumed a great deal of time for you and your staff in putting up items and tracking what was available, and that wasn't part of how you wanted to spend time as part of your LIFE. I think that is really important for entrepreneurs: "Remember why you did this in the first place! Doing what you love and making your life better!" It is so easy to go off into areas that get you side-tracked. That really struck me when you told about it in an earlier video! BTW, the stain glass looks great as does the canoedelier!

That guitar amp is a CRATE, which were mostly made in St. Louis, MO. I owned a music instrument store for 22 years, and I was a dealer for Crate. This era of Crate amps are known for having issues with cold solder joints, which will make them cut out. If you have a soldering iron, remove the amp from it's box and remove the circuit board from the amp's chassis, and look it over really well. Might want to use a magnifying glass during this step, as you are looking for solder joints that are cracked. When you find them, or if you think ANY of them are questionable, just re-heat them with your iron until the solder is hot enough to flow and that will fix them 99 times out of 100. Easy peezy, although it takes a little time to disassemble and reassemble the amp.
OH, I forgot to mention, if a Crate starts cutting out, take your fist and just give the amp a rap on the top, you don't have to bash it hard, but if you rap it and it acts like it is trying to come back on, then you know you have a cold/loose solder joint.
Oh my gosh! At 12:30, the way you filmed that side window, it looked like it was one of those old fashioned, frosted & rib textured glass windows. Turns out it was just the neighbors warehouse! That stained glass is perfect there. 😍 From one artist to another, I love how each and every job you complete is a separate project.
LOL, Alex's pockets are always stuffed with bulky, oddly-shaped things that make his hips look funny :). Some day you'll have to show us what you're carrying around.

Alex, have you thought about installing window film. I think it would be perfect on the window with the stained glass. Take the stained glass down. Put the window film on. It goes on like tape.
