    This is the first recording of the Caprices that really shows their character and doesn't just sound like a series of technical exercises. Very Italianate with plenty of humor (remember, Rossini was Paganini's idol).

    Itzhak Perlman has huge fingers for the violin and it is absolutely amazing to see his total flexibility and absolute mastery control on the finger board.

      @@Meira750 Yes indeed. I watched him seated while performing a violin concerto with the orchestra. Absolutely breathtaking performance of hte Mendlessohn violin concerto.

      Keep in mind he had mastered the instrument well before adulthood. So the technique was already in his fingers before his hands were large.

      What I found amazing as well, is his mind flexibility as well. For example, after playing Paganini, he goes making pizza. And all this being constrained. He is totally brilliant

    I didn’t heard lots of Perlman’s recording, but I think his one has power, but some soft beauty. It is great to hear this great violinist’s recording with just search and click(or touch)

    I think it is absolutely incredible how he plays it with perfect intonation and yet still put so much emotion into the pieces.

    A superb recording. Many thanks for the post. Itzhak Perlman should also be commended for the fact that in his retirement he donates a lot of his time to leading and coaching young violinists (at every level of ability) at a school which he created in Sarasota, Florida. Bravo again, Maestro!

    Kovacos (Dynamic) made the best recording and that's a fact (0 % doubt !). Never heard someone play these pieces witch such skill, ease, passion and virtuosity. As good as it gets.

      I agree, Kavakos is a monster on these. I also like James Ehnes on Teldec and for someone who plays them with a lot of character and nuance, Gringolts. Gringolts' gives them humor and a demonic ambience few dare to do.

    Bien souvent l'interprétation des Caprices ne fait ressortir que la technicité de l'oeuvre , dans cet enregistrement Itzhak Perlman rajoute la beauté a cette technicité ce qui montre qu'il est bien au dessus de la difficulté technique pour pouvoir accèder à la subtilité.

    We had this record, from 1972. It was a disaster...Instead of practicing I just played the album over and over- so I never learned the violin.
    I think in their time these short pieces were dismissed as "technical" ("capricious")- but now they sound way ahead of their time.
