    The expansion’s story was a mess, the gameplay was decent, the world was pretty but by god the soundtrack is incredible

    • @_its_lunar_
      @_its_lunar_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @N7Andy I love Valhalla’s story and I enjoyed the mythology sections too for how they tied into the Isu lore. The writing of the DLC was just bad, the Isu lore involved in it doesn’t make it better, if anything it makes it worse as they’re only further convoluting a messy story and contradicting things. That also doesn’t change the nature of the anticlimactic ending and that it’s part one of a DLC for twice the average DLC price.
      The vision stuff works in snippets but it doesn’t work (unless you they make major changes) for a whole expansion because then you have to write a story that adheres consistently to mythology which further convoluted the Isu lore when you start taking metaphors and fantasy passes down for generations as being a literal account of events in Isu history. Not to mention the DLC contradicting lore established in the main game!
      Odin also just isn’t a likeable character to play as either, they have Eivor’s voice and face but all of the charm and endeering qualities are gone in place of godly arrogance and inconsistent dialogue that creates narrative dissonance.
      Sorry that’s a bit of a rant but this DLC just narratively doesn’t work for me and it should’ve sold for half the price

    • @_its_lunar_
      @_its_lunar_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @N7Andy my point is Odin is awful and that’s why it’s not a good idea to make them your protagonist. I understand all the lore behind it, that’s not my issue. From a storytelling standpoint having an unlikable egomaniac as your main character in a story we’re supposed to sympathise with them in just doesn’t work in this case

    • @_its_lunar_
      @_its_lunar_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @N7Andy the game clearly wants you to sympathise with Odin and his goals, this isn’t some cautionary tale despite all the things Odin does wrong. There’s also a dissonance between Odin’s apathy to the dwarves struggles and the gameplay of running around helping dwarves and then him asking for no reward and then also in a different quest saying he only helps for a reward. That constant flip flopping does the character no favours.
      My point is having a character that is fundamentally unlikable who never learns or grows and who’s ego is never challenged as your game’s protagonist is harmful to the experience as a whole. That’s not to say your protagonist can’t have unappealing facets, Ezio and Edward both posses negative traits but over the course of their respective games those traits are challenged and the character overcomes them. Odin is an unlikeable egomaniac and he stays that way and the game expects you to enjoy your time with him.
      You ask “so what can you do” but that’s the issue, to be faithful to Odin’s mythology you can’t deviate from that character. Perhaps the very concept of having the main character of your game being a powerful Isu leader who is indisputably awful is at its core fundamentally flawed. Part of Eivor’s journey is overcoming the part of Odin that lives inside them, perhaps it’s also counter intuitive to make us play more as the devil on the shoulder.

    • @_its_lunar_
      @_its_lunar_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @N7Andy I specifically said I think it works in small doses, where as having Odin as the protagonist for an entire expansion just doesn’t. And I don’t have any thoughts on the upcoming storyline because I don’t know anything concrete about it. I’m saving my judgement for when we get some official information. But also Basim is treated for the brief moments we had of him in the modern day as a more villainous character who’s manipulating others to reach his own ends and not someone we’re supposed to root for despite being awful.

    • @_its_lunar_
      @_its_lunar_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @N7Andy I literally just said I liked how Basim has nefarious motives that we have yet to understand. That’s interesting. But we’re also not playing as him the entire game. When we play as Basim the point is we’re experiencing is machinations, whereas DoR follows a journey we’re supposed to empathise with yet the protagonist is awful. These are two different things.
      And I also previously said that this works in snippets, that’s why a more villainous character like Basim works in the modern day but not as someone you play as for a whole game. It’s all about framing. Basim is a bad guy and is framed as such and the narrative is about whatever he’s planning with Alethia; whereas Odin is a bad guy but is framed as a good guy on a journey about family and the narrative is framed in a way that we are supposed to be invested in their struggles.
      There are plenty of games that have you play as a bad guy and have you relish in it. Like I said, it’s about framing. Dawn of Ragnarok simply isn’t narratively assembles correctly. I don’t know how to fix that but it simply does not work as it is, and that’s just with Odin alone; there’s so much going on in the story that just doesn’t work

    Not to rain on their Grammy parade but this isn't even close to the quality of what Genshin Impact is putting out musically the last 3 years (and I don't even like Genshin Impact as a game).

    • @stephenwagner3717
      @stephenwagner3717 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t played either games, or heard genshin impact, just more to consider. The music from the soundtrack might be better placed in the game than genshin impact. They might have better compositions for genshin, but AC might’ve just wrapped it all together nicer. I don’t know how they judge soundtracks by, like if they do it just by sound or how they incorporate the music into the game as well. From what I can tell, genshin impact is a money grabbing gotcha game, while assassins creed is a full-on traditional video game, maybe a more in-depth story line since you don’t have to randomly pull from a pack for a chance to get characters.

    • @stephenwagner3717
      @stephenwagner3717 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I listened to some of genshin impacts soundtrack, and immediately there are key differences. There’s more going on harmonically in AC than genshin impact. Genshin has melodies that are easy to identify, like the classical era of music. This is more atmospheric and does a great job at pulling you into the atmosphere being presented. Yeah there are melodies in AC, but they are not the focus, but more decoration for the atmosphere and most people wouldnt be tempted to hum along. Genshin has great Melodies that makes you want to hum along, great writing, but this soundtrack is an entirely different beast compared to genshin.
