Vince Velasquez in LF was wild
there's also a play where he's pitching. he gets drilled in his right arm with a liner. ball goes towards the third base side and he fires a laser to first base left handed.

Jim Thome was an everyday third baseman until 1997 when Cleveland acquired Matt Williams, so the clip of him wasn't out of position at that time.
Posada almost couldn't make that 20ft throw from 2nd to 1st. Good god

Given that we've had both Steve Sax and Chuck Knoblauch, I've seen way worse throws from 2B.

Gary Carter and Jesse Orosco were really out of positions. I remember that in Cincinnati.
That was the Ray Knight and Eric Davis brawl game, right?

Yes. It was the same game that Keith Hernandez started a 3-5-4 double play by fielding a bunt a few steps from the third base line. One of the most unique plays I've ever seen.

I remember Carter occasionally playing first base when he was playing for the Expos. And I used to think Johnny Bench was the only catcher to play third base. Obviously I am wrong. Thank you MLB.

Thome wasn’t out of position
Most of these aren’t players out of position as much as them making their major league debuts in a different position from what we are used to. For instance Donaldson wasn’t out of position. He came up as a catcher.

I remember seeing Pudge play second base. Brandon Phillips playing 3rd on the Braves. Freddie Freeman moving over to third for like 15 games. But really the wackiest is seeing Chipper Jones as a left fielder for a couple years straight. Rare to find left field highlights from him. Only see him out there from an Andruw Jones highlight and chipper just watching.
I remember that! I think he was considered a fail out there. I remember he made the cover of SI with the headline "Butcher, give it up Chipper"!

Agreed. It seems neither wacky nor wild to show Jim Thome playing 3B, considering he played more than 840 games there in his career (Majors and Minors).
And some of these guys were "tried" at all kinds of positions, some never really owned a position and became DH's.

Supposedly Edd Roush played a few innings at 2nd base in 1920. However, after looking at the game's box score and play by play, I "think" Roush did not actually play second, but officially he did.
It's always nice to know about players that played other positions. Throughout my days in rec league, I've played every position, except first and catcher
early years of Josh Donaldson when he played catcher. I saw him play in the minors at that position

Mattingly was also a 2nd baseman for 1/3 of an inning, the batter struck out, so there's nothing to see.

if it were say 1954 youd win if you said 1 player lol. today game is a joke!
fyi Joe Sewell while playing 2nd base w/NY Yankees struckout only 3 times in entire 1932 season while hitting 11 HRs......Ohtani Trout etc strikeout 3-4 times per game a couple times per month now...
This is proof for those secondary positions in MLB the Show
Troy Glaus at shortstop, Ryan Zimmerman and Adrian Gonzalez in the outfield, Cristian Guzman at 3B in the All-Star Game and never played 3B prior to that.
Wildest one i can remember is when Mauer played right field.
Bagwell in right tops that in my opinion, especially considering he was in the middle of his MVP season when they did that one game experiment.
Joey Gallo had no position so playing 3B, 1B, or outfield was just okay. I bet he could pitch too.

Gallo came up as a 3B but was absolutely terrible. Eventually got moved to RF where he was excellent. I’m fascinated by that-a guy who struggles at his “natural” position becomes a plus-plus defender elsewhere on the diamond.
That Mattingly play isn't super crazy until you realize that this is one of the only times in the modern era a left handed thrower has EVER played 3B in the big leagues. Generally speaking the only position on the infield that can be played by a defensive southpaw is first base.
And there was that time the Giants walked it off vs the Dodgers when LA had their 5’10” catcher at first base and Trea Turner threw it too high.
I remember seeing Posada's game at 2nd base in high school. You can tell they were really having fun there!

It’s just funny to me how the ball always finds the person playing out of their normal position. I guess it’s true what one of my coaches said all those years ago (luckily not to me lol), “the ball will always find you”

Because he wasn't all that good, its really not all that complicated. A 1B with less than 250 HR, only 42 bWAR. He's really not even close.

@@siloshroom2132 Sure, not saying he's bad or not an interesting player, but he's not a hall of famer, he's a good player who was on track to accumulate but injury got to him, many such cases.

Who wouldn't hold their breath if a "base" was hit at them. That seems more dangerous than a ball would be coming at you.

Catcher handle everything behind the dish. They are never out of position and perfectly capable in any other defensive position
What isn't shown is the 1983 game in extra innings when the Orioles had John Lowenstein at 2B, Gary Roenicke at 3B, and Lenn Sakata at catcher - all out of position. They get the three outs on three pickoffs by Tippy Martinez. Then Sakata hits a walkoff HR to win the game in the bottom of the inning.
Posada tried his best Chuck Knoblach impersonation on that throw!

It's too bad that Vince Velasquez was no longer with the Phillies in 2023. They could have had an outfield of Velasquez in left, Trea Turner in center, and Michael Lorenzen in right.
Speaking of 2023 Phillies, J.T. Realmuto as a Marlin hit that ball to Turner as a National and then in the next segment made the putout on the assist from Velasquez.

I saw Beltre at 2nd for the Mariners. I saw an Athletics players play Catcher, Left, 2nd Base and come in to pitch from 2nd all in one MLB game

I was more impressed with left-handed Don Mattingly playing 3B than any of the other players playing out of position. I can only imagine how difficult it has to be playing 3b when the glove hand is on the right hand and most balls are hit to your left side where you have to back hand all of your catches.
They said Bregman played 2B 5 times that season alone, his shouldn't count at all for this

Kent Tekulve once played left field got the last out in the ninth. If the batter had got on Kent would pitched to him. He had been on the mound before going to LF.
Bregnans played alot of 2B. Donaldson came up as a catcher originally. Thome came up as a 3B. Some are a stretch....

Well, this video is 50% of a good idea. Of what significance are any of these clips if you don't at least tell us the normal playing position of the player involved? Too bad you couldn't do a little home work and highlight a player really out of position: Micky Stanley the Tiger's center fielder in 1968 being moved to short stop for the World Series. Now that is rising to the occasion in a high stress situation.
This might have been better if you had maybe the player name, team and position prior to the clip of the play
Technically Josh Donaldson at Catcher isn't out of position. That's just where he started out.
one of my favorites is 39 year old carlton fisk - slow even for a catcher - playing some left field for chicago in 1987. in that same vein, i would like to know what cruel manager sent him to be caught stealing at the age of 45
He was a perfect 3 for 3 in stolen bases at the age of 44.

Of Jim Thome's top 3 seasons in terms of WAR, numbers 1 and 3 were when he was a 3rd baseman. Fascinating.
that's because 3b is a premium position for defensive WAR both seasons he gets 2 pts higher because of the positional rating
@@mrob8982 makes sense, but that's because it's also significantly tougher to play than first base, so he played a decent enough 3rd base to not take those 2 pts away. 0.3 dWAR and 0.4 dWAR in those seasons

@E3Ops the video was specifically about players playing positions they don't normally play.... hence my comment that frelick has solely played the outfield. He wouldn't be in this compilation.

I'm not far into the video, but Thome was initially a 1B & Donaldson was a C....
Thome came up in 1991 and didn't play a game at First Base until 1997.
