      there's also a play where he's pitching. he gets drilled in his right arm with a liner. ball goes towards the third base side and he fires a laser to first base left handed.

    Jim Thome was an everyday third baseman until 1997 when Cleveland acquired Matt Williams, so the clip of him wasn't out of position at that time.

      Yes. It was the same game that Keith Hernandez started a 3-5-4 double play by fielding a bunt a few steps from the third base line. One of the most unique plays I've ever seen.

      I remember Carter occasionally playing first base when he was playing for the Expos. And I used to think Johnny Bench was the only catcher to play third base. Obviously I am wrong. Thank you MLB.

      Most of these aren’t players out of position as much as them making their major league debuts in a different position from what we are used to. For instance Donaldson wasn’t out of position. He came up as a catcher.

    I remember seeing Pudge play second base. Brandon Phillips playing 3rd on the Braves. Freddie Freeman moving over to third for like 15 games. But really the wackiest is seeing Chipper Jones as a left fielder for a couple years straight. Rare to find left field highlights from him. Only see him out there from an Andruw Jones highlight and chipper just watching.

    Most of these were they began or feeling out where they would fit best. Thome’s originally a third baseman.

      Agreed. It seems neither wacky nor wild to show Jim Thome playing 3B, considering he played more than 840 games there in his career (Majors and Minors).

      Supposedly Edd Roush played a few innings at 2nd base in 1920. However, after looking at the game's box score and play by play, I "think" Roush did not actually play second, but officially he did.

      fyi Joe Sewell while playing 2nd base w/NY Yankees struckout only 3 times in entire 1932 season while hitting 11 HRs......Ohtani Trout etc strikeout 3-4 times per game a couple times per month now...

      Gallo came up as a 3B but was absolutely terrible. Eventually got moved to RF where he was excellent. I’m fascinated by that-a guy who struggles at his “natural” position becomes a plus-plus defender elsewhere on the diamond.

    That Mattingly play isn't super crazy until you realize that this is one of the only times in the modern era a left handed thrower has EVER played 3B in the big leagues. Generally speaking the only position on the infield that can be played by a defensive southpaw is first base.

    It’s just funny to me how the ball always finds the person playing out of their normal position. I guess it’s true what one of my coaches said all those years ago (luckily not to me lol), “the ball will always find you”

      Because he wasn't all that good, its really not all that complicated. A 1B with less than 250 HR, only 42 bWAR. He's really not even close.

    Catcher handle everything behind the dish. They are never out of position and perfectly capable in any other defensive position

    What isn't shown is the 1983 game in extra innings when the Orioles had John Lowenstein at 2B, Gary Roenicke at 3B, and Lenn Sakata at catcher - all out of position. They get the three outs on three pickoffs by Tippy Martinez. Then Sakata hits a walkoff HR to win the game in the bottom of the inning.

    It's too bad that Vince Velasquez was no longer with the Phillies in 2023. They could have had an outfield of Velasquez in left, Trea Turner in center, and Michael Lorenzen in right.
    Speaking of 2023 Phillies, J.T. Realmuto as a Marlin hit that ball to Turner as a National and then in the next segment made the putout on the assist from Velasquez.

    I was more impressed with left-handed Don Mattingly playing 3B than any of the other players playing out of position. I can only imagine how difficult it has to be playing 3b when the glove hand is on the right hand and most balls are hit to your left side where you have to back hand all of your catches.

    Kent Tekulve once played left field got the last out in the ninth. If the batter had got on Kent would pitched to him. He had been on the mound before going to LF.

    Well, this video is 50% of a good idea. Of what significance are any of these clips if you don't at least tell us the normal playing position of the player involved? Too bad you couldn't do a little home work and highlight a player really out of position: Micky Stanley the Tiger's center fielder in 1968 being moved to short stop for the World Series. Now that is rising to the occasion in a high stress situation.

    one of my favorites is 39 year old carlton fisk - slow even for a catcher - playing some left field for chicago in 1987. in that same vein, i would like to know what cruel manager sent him to be caught stealing at the age of 45

    Of Jim Thome's top 3 seasons in terms of WAR, numbers 1 and 3 were when he was a 3rd baseman. Fascinating.

      that's because 3b is a premium position for defensive WAR both seasons he gets 2 pts higher because of the positional rating
