As an automotive engineer you should know that this isn't an engineering issue. Manufacturers put the same engine in various vehicles. An engineer could easily relocate the drain plug for every vehicle application but the higher ups want to save money on tooling costs.

Manufacturers put the same engine in various vehicles. In this case they didn't have an engineer relocate the oil drain plug for this vehicle application. This has nothing to do with faulty engineering so you'll have to ask a higher up at GM that makes the decisions for R&D and tooling costs to experience the flaws.

You have to understand that engineer are ask to optimize the engineering for reduce assembly cost and time at the detriment of maintainability. If manufacturer told and reserved engineering time for easier maintenance, the result would probably be different.

We're not idiots we have some serious business constraints. Business leads the company not engineers unfortunetly. When we do package studies no doubt this popped up. But board level didnt take notice as it either cost to much to change the pacakging, time consuming, and to costly + neigbouring engineers will fight their corner to not agree (if not critical) so they do minimal changes and save extra work and costs. So the engineer who designed that error on packaging prob know and is unhappy but has no power to make the changes they wanted. Its bigger than 'oh just draw something up and make it' 🤦‍♂️ world is that straight forward when it comes to business and making profits. Engineering is secondary infortunetly. I've been in the industry for 15years and worked with 5major OEMs. So have something to go by.

It would probably cost GM about $30,000 to move that drain plug on just that model. At aluminum oil pan would have to be recast for each and every one of those models produced. Oil filter comes in a pasteboard box that can easily be fashioned into a deflector so that you don't spill the oil everywhere use your head.

Works quite well and Impalas are not only vehicles designed like this. Very stupid yes but easily overcome.

The engineering industry will never let that happen because of these reasons, it's not a lot of engineers in the market place, it's time consuming, it will delay process within projects, and it will be expensive to let that happen.
It's basically the supply demand game. It is more people who are less educated, then educated so corpations know they can use them compared to an engineer who spent 4-6 in college to learn their profession. So, that gives power to the engineer.
So, to save time and money they put all of the weight on the technicians, and labor guys to do the work...

If you think that’s bad you should work on modern bicycles! The people who designed them don’t seem to understand a simple concept of maintenance? For your problem, (as a bike mechanic) would a funnel and a rubber tube help? Or a pvc pipe?

Well to start id weld the existing drain hole shut with aluminum, then id drill a hole smack dab in the center. Following that I'd tap the hole for a steel insert. And plug it at the bottom...... smarter guy 👦

@@WhatTheDuckAuto if you're going to fix it yourself, sure, but that kind of thing won't happen in production.
The engine is designed at one company. The chassis at another company. The body another, and so on. Often in different countries. Then all this crap has to be coordinated. I can't even imagine THAT nightmare.
I work with engineers designing cosmetic pieces (trims, grilles, etc.). Crap that does nothing but look good and it gets ridiculous at times.
I guess my point was, it's a miracle these things work at all. So, I don't sweat a messy oil change.

@@timdutton2056 not to necro a month old post but a simple solution, copy what works for other vehicle designs then, yall don't gotta be special Chevy Silverado's in general have the smartest oil filter and oil drain plug location, drain plug facing to one side, with the filter slightly above the drain plug allows mechanics to remove the plug and loosen the filter without making a mess, every single car could be designed to be that simple. But you engineers choose not to. part of it is business constraints, but personally i feel part of it is yall are too arrogant and half to make stuff different to feel good about it.

Your blaming the wrong people. What customer has ever entered a show room and said "I'm looking for a car that easy for technicians to work on." Zero, therefore the sales and marketing people who set the vehicle requirements, based in market place demands, don't make ease of maintenance a priority that has to be met by the design. So it isn't.

I don’t care how you put it they’re not there’s nothing in the same about them anything is engineers are stupid. We see it one way there is a reason why they do it. They will have a good reasonable explanation. Why they did it that way if it’s save money, new design, change the pitch whatever they will have a reason for it.
