    I am from Kenya. I agree with you strongly. Bride price is a good, rich culture when modesty is observed, but when there is exploitation and huge amounts involved often making the young couple start with difficulty marriage, then it is counter productive.

    Africans in the diaspora need to understand the true meaning and root of the African bride price requirement during a traditional marriage to defend themselves better, should the situation turn out unfavourable.

      I STRONGLY support. Most of us don't even really know what the practice represents. So we say yes to everything.

    it sounds more like a business this day, some parents are raising their daughters like livestock that will pay off someday. but it's a good tradition mais makambo batu mingi bazosala mikolo oyo, ezobangisa biso ba single, yango wana totikali kobala bamindele po choix eza te heure mususu.

    I found this post very helpful. I am an American with an Angolan girlfriend who just stunned me with a Bride Price request. We plan to marry and live in the US where the divorce laws are already brutal so BP could make things excessively burdensome. Also, BP is traditional in a world of increasingly non-traditional women. The entire process sounds like a scam.

    I agree with you, especially about the involvement of extended family. They tend to make it more about them which in turn causes conflict.
    I love your content by the way. Keep up the good work 🌸

    Countries that don't have bride price would never even consider introducing it. This is a pretty good indication of its inherent value.

    Some American couples like to give a bride price to represent the price the Savior paid for His "bride," (the people that love Him.). The Bible's laws talk about a bride price but the exchange is meant to demonstrate commitment on the husband's part, like giving an engagement ring in Western culture. Some fathers in the Bible stories also tried to use the bride price to get rich so I guess that's another proof that people don't change.

  • @AkinAkin
    @AkinAkin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Preesh. The bride price should be given to the couples!!!

    My only issue with all of this is: it seems not to matter where the man came from and how expensive it took to raise him as well. Moreover, its not like the man will entirely stop being there for the wife's family once dowry is paid. Unless if thats what supposed to happen? Sounds like dowry is a transaction to cut ties. Personally I think dowry must be an exchange of gifts of equivalent value between both families. Period.

    I believe what majority of young people who are beginning to be against the bridal price etc...fail to understand is that the responsibility of marriage and paying the money falls on the whole family, not the husband alone, (but too many hero's going around) secondly, bridal price has been a culture that's been around for hundred years not only Africans practice it but many other cultures practice it in different form, it's more of an appreciation towards the lady family than anything.
    I agree with the other point of excessive amount of money being asked nowadays, but on the note of being a fixed price totally against that, and on the note the money should be given back to the couples kills the whole purpose of it all together.
    Ps. Recently got married.

    • @CongoTalks243
      @CongoTalks243  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congratulations on your wedding! 🎉
      I think one of the problems is really the fact that the ritual represents different things to different cultures (even within the same country) but we rarely ever know what is expected of us until we decide to get married. If its essence is really to show gratitude, then it would make sense not to ask for it like most families do. But I don’t know much ‘cause I’m not there yet I guess 😭

    Mbote I watched your video and I like it. I believe that the Bride Price need to be regulated practically. 1st it needs to be understood at a deeper level. I read this about Bantu-Kongo marriage (longo) from the book AFRICAN COSMOLOGY OF THE BANTU KONGO Principals of Life & Living by KIMBWANDENDE K. B. FU- KIAU, PH.D. page 39 & 40. The marriage,in other words,for the Bantu-Kongo, is a physically living symbol of alliance (s) between,at least,two communities. Therefore,divorce is not an issue of individuals,but of communities involved in the marriage. As I understand it marriage (longo) is not a only a marriage of two individuals but also a marriage (longo) of at least two different communities. So yes it going to cost a lot of money to get marriage. That is my understanding feel free to correct me on the part that I might have gotten wrong. I like your videos.Melesi. Nzambi a pambola yo.

    Sister. First,I really enjoy your teachings. I am from America, I don’t know enough about my African heritage.
    I do know that my DNA lineage shows a larger make up of Kongo and Bantu, and I watch channels like yours and others to learn.
    Concerning the bride price. I know that the bride price is a biblical principle, and I would like for us African Americans to consider this practice as well.
    In the Bible jewelry was often given to the prospective bride. Genesis 24;53.
    Would you be able to elaborate on how this process evolved from giving the dowry to the bride from now giving it to the brides family? Thank you for teachings.

      Hi dear!
      Welcome to the family, I’m glad you learn a thing or two here.
      I’m not quite sure if the practice (the way it is practiced in Africa) is based on the bible because everybody does it regardless of religion and it sometimes represents different things to different cultures on the continent. Some cultures are traditionally supposed to give it back to the bride but not many of them do it seems.
