  • We filmed Davey Collins in Finglas in 2001 making this pot in the traditional way. What a pleasure it was to see him at work, he was a master of this craft, and a gentleman. The resulting short film was one of a series of 32 films we produced or TG4 and the arts Council, on the subject of artists and makers from around Ireland. This film shows the entire process from beginning to end.

I wish there was more positive videos of traveller culture around like this... I love metal shaping and would have bit the hand off of Davey Collins if I'd had the chance to learn a bit from an old school tinker like him, mighty stuff!

A wonderfully crafted piece of workmanship. Skills going by the wayside today. Thank you for the demonstration.

Amazing to watch. Maybe a handful of people in the world left that can do what he did in under an hour.

      Any Spengler can do it.
Very simple, it's quite rough with all the hammer marks.

He is a professional tin smith but the camera man was concentrating more on the tin smith face than the job he was doing

I work with copper every day and I don’t have very many tools, but what this man can do with a piece of a board and a metal stake is amazing! So encouraging! I worked on the road, usually in a tent. I love to see him building this without even a table or chair! This guy is amazing! ❤
I wonder what gauge copper he is using? Looks thin, like, maybe 24 gauge…

Not wishing to be critical of a skilled man but the guage looks too thin to me. Wouldn't last if used daily on a range. i.m.o.

It definitely is,I am a student in the first year of the tinsmith craft and I feel a sense of reward when i make a functional, goodlooking product with my own hands, also my father has worked as a tinsmith his whole life until now,so he was the main reason I chose this profession, his work is an inspiration to me.

Next time try wiggling the camera more and zoom in and out of his nose a few more times! This would have been a great video had you set the camera on a tripod, stood still, quit zooming and running around all the time and just focused on the work at hand.

Hi @tommiller9743 . Thanks for watching. This footage was originally shot for a series of 32 one-minute films we were producing for broadcast on TG4. The original intention was to edit all this footage into a one minute film (which we did). There was a good bit of interest in seeing all the original footage (including from Davy's family) so we decided to put it all up, unedited. You're correct - if we were producing a one hour document of Davy's work, we would have shot it is a very different way.
