When Mulan decides she will take her father’s place in his call to duty, her ancestors summon a guardian to protect and guide her on her journey. With her guardian Mushu, Mulan fights the Huns and saves China, but was Mushu really the only guardian? Was there actually a second guardian present in Mulan’s life?

If this is true, then when Khan stomps on Mushu when he first introduces himself to Mulan, it may have been because he knew of Mushu's past failures as a guardian! It may also explain why Khan and Mushu would communicate and tease one another repeatedly, such as Mushu calling Khan a cow and Khan's responses; this may have been because they recognized each other as guardians and didn't see the other as fit to guide Mulan on her journey.

Khan also does it multiple times Mulan 2 bc of Mushu's attempts at ruining the marriage (if they married, mushu would lose his ability to be a guardian forever. Spoiler alert, he doesnt.)

This definitely makes sense, and I'm all for Khan being another guardian. However, he's not the only expressive animal. What about Cri-Kee? He's expressive too, and was supposed to be a good luck charm for Mulan. But, it makes more sense to have Khan play the role of guardian, since as you pointed out, a horse is on the Chinese Zodiac.
I didn't include Cricket because there was less evidence for him being a guardian, but he might be. I'm not 100% sure :D Thanks for watching!
What if he was the grandmother's guardian!? Which explains why she had him at the beginning of the movie!
Marauders4EVR I don't think crickets have long enough lives for that. Khan may be a guardian, but does that necessarily mean he can live longer than a normal horse? Mushu is a dragon, so he obviously has a great many years of life in him, more so than a human, but horses don't have that gift.

Maybe Mushu worked well as a guardian for Mulan because she is a dragon zodiac. (I know the ancestors didn't want Mushu, but they still wanted a dragon) and the reason the other ancestors wanted the specific animal guardians is because they were their zodiac animals in life and wanted to see them receive more glory. That would mean her father is also a horse zodiac, and I don't mean that everyone has to have their own zodiac, they are just more comparable with their own.
Another thing that has puzzled me about Mulan...during the boot camp, where Shang tells the soldiers that the two bronze weights represent strength and discipline, and that you needed both to reach the arrow, do you think Shang also tied them together during his boot camp when he first joined the military, or do you think Mulan was the first one to figure out that trick? Either way, it wasn't cheating, it was thinking outside the box, turning what seemed like burdens into something useful to propel yourself up the wood pole.
A dog is also part of the Chinese Zodiac. But you didn't say it because there was no dog statue. Do you think LITTLE BROTHER IS A GUARDIAN TOO?

Also, there wasn't a snake, rat or pig guardian statue. Maybe two of those animals were the guardians of Fa Li and Grandmother Fa.
Wouldn't that be cool? Each of the living relatives of Mulan all have guardians. In the second film the ancestors told Mushu he would be out of the job once Mulan was protected my Shang's guardians so maybe what family you marry in to traditionally is where you'd get a new guardian from. Perhaps those statues were in angles -not- seen, since they took pains to show the ancestors from a usually forward or 3/4 forward angle, that leaves room for the 'missing' statues in the shrine to be facing inward. Or, perhaps, like the Stone Dragon, they were placed outside of the main shrine. Could theorize they left the rat and snake out near the storage areas to ward off pests, and a small pig statue in the livestock area, etc. There not showing any statue of those when most of the zodiac is represented (albeit with Mushu on the incense holder/gong) doesn't mean they -don-t have them in some capacity. Doesn't mean they do, either, but hey, theories.
I've never seen Mulan, but do you think that "The Dragon" from OUAT is most likely to be that Mushu dude?
I kind of don't think so, but I'm not sure. "The Dragon" is one of those mysteries I'm really curious about.

That... Makes a lot of sense. Even as a kid i found it weird how expressive, smart and even courageous the horse was.

I 100% agree with this; since one of the four elements for the horse in the Chinese Zodiac is fire. I'm not sure but I think fire represents bravery and courage - maybe Khan is a reflection of the Fa family or Mulan (in spirit)?
I've just done a Tarzan theory of Jane's background story but one of the things that puzzles me is that why everyone thinks Trek is a girl (minus the play fighting)? I don't know if it maybe a good theory to focus on but it's worth trying to suggest it. 🙂

Here's why people think Terk is a girl: In German there are 2 ways to say "best friend": "Bester Freund" if it's a guy and "beste Freundin" if it's a girl. In the German translation of the movie Terk calls herself Tarzan's "beste Freundin". She speaks of herself as a female. Plus at the beginning her mother calls her "Terkina". I'd say this is a female name. But in the musical Terk's a guy.^^
If you play the quiz on the movie disk, there's a question that asks for Terk's full name in a way that nudges the audience towards female. That and on a episode in the tv show Terk wants to impress a male gorilla and asks Jane to make her look 'pretty' and teach her to be 'lady like'
I think I specifically remember Terk's mother saying; "Alright little lady it's time for bed." This is probably over shadowed by Terk begging her mom to stay up longer.
Question: Mulan was being sent home the first time she tried to train to become a warrior but didn't do well enough, of course only being allowed back after she proved herself by climbing the totem and improving greatly in her abilities. If Mulan's father did go to the military, wouldn't they just send him home as well when they saw how incapable he was to fight? I guess if Mulan didn't know that, she may think her father would be imprisoned or punished in another way somehow. Plus, it would be very embarrassing for her father. Mulan of course wanted to be a substitute for her father and perhaps thought that he would accept her going in his place since she's his child and so a part of him and continuation of his legacy. Of course she would still have had to leave in secret since he'd probably never actually agree to it. When she returned home and presented the offerings to her father, Mulan was obviously feeling guilty and expecting shame. But upon her return, knowing that her reasons were pure and out of love and seeing everything she'd accomplished beyond being a regular soldier, of course her father harbored no anger or disappointment. Now, I'm a really big fan and lover of all things Disney, so I'm not trying to poo-poo Mulan, its a great movie and I like it a lot. But if Mulan's father would've ultimately been fine anyway even if Mulan didn't take his place, can't the story just stop there? I love the rest of the story and it becomes so much more than Mulan trying to protect her father and bring honor to her family, but its kind of funny to think about. But yea my question is basically would Mulan's father would be sent home from the military if he was deemed unfit, safe and sound, albeit extremely ashamed?

The only theory I ever knew of was the stone dragon theory when the stone dragon had actually gone with her, hence why the staute broke. HOWEVER this theory actually makes more sense since their are 12 guardians and only 11 are statues. This is such a good theory that It definitely gets a stamp of approval from this Disney fan!

Ever since the movie first came out in the late 1990s, Mulan had been one of my favorite movies and all time favorite character. For Khan, I just thought he was a very loyal, noble steed, but this about him possibly being Mulan’s second guardian makes so much sense.
The theory I had:
The grandmother seems to be at the head of the household when it came to the ancestors and in contacting them, as it was her who got notified by the ancestors when Mulan ran away. This could mean that she has a say in awakening a guardian, for example the dragon statue standing outside the shrine. My theory is that the dragon couldn't be awakened by Mushu because he was already summoned by Grandmother Fa, in her call for assistance to help Mulan with the matchmaker at the beginning of the movie. And as legends say that particularly powerful dragons can shapeshift, guess who was with Grandmother Fa on her way to meet Mulan? Cri-Kee.

Khan is Mulan's guardian, because they share their ways of thinking, they understand each other very well and they protect each other!
I think that there were 3 guardians: Mushu, Kahn, and Mulan herself. The reason for that is the ancestors told Mushu to "awaken the Great Stone Dragon" but the dragon was already gone when we see the eyes flash before mama fa wakes Fa Shu and Mulan's mother by saying Mulan is gone. Thus giving the representation that Mulan is the Great Stone Dragon. This theory was already shown by someone but I can't remember who posted it.

There are many ways I agree but others I disagree. In the older times Warhorses aka like Khan are trained to do anything for their owners/riders. Like when Mulan was almost punished the horses instints and training were seen.
Maybe the Horse is a Special Guardian. The way you can communicate with the horse is maybe like, think that you are talking to it and it can listen. That you can hear it talking to you inside of your head. Or you can communicate with it by telling the ancestors.. my theory

Cricky and Khan could be guardians, with only the grandmother and father being able to hear there voices. Aside from needing to protect Mulan, her interests, and being obligated by Mulan being married, when has Mushu talked to a living human other than Mulan? Meaning, the mother might be able to understand Khan if she wanted to, or needed to, not only the father. Over all, and yes I read a few other comments before this, it would make sense. Mulan has three guardians that belong to herself, her father, and either her grandmother or deceased grandfather helping her.

. 1) How does one become a guardian?
2) What happens when a guardian dies while the person they're are assigned to?
3) If the statue is destroy what happens to the spirit? If the statue is fixed or replaced can it still be a guardian?

Dang it. It was a horse. I thought it was the cricket... I'm not sure where Mulan's grandma found the cricket but it stayed with Mulan everywhere she went. That's also why I thought it was the cricket.
I have a Chinese Zodiac sign is a dog and I like dogs. Mulan was one of my favorite when I was little and I saw the movie about her. It was her duty to follow her heart and I always think of Mulan as a loyal person. I always accepted her the way who she was and I hope that someday that I would see a statue of Mulan as the hero of China. ☺️
My theory is that the reason the Great Stone Dragon did not awaken, was because it already had, within Mulan. Whom, as she made her choice to take her father's place, she was seated between the claws of the Great Stone Dragon's statue.

Something to be noted in Mulan the eyes of the Dragon glow and that wakes her grandma up something I thought of and I've heard I've heard this before that the great Stone Dragon Spirit went into Mulan so I was thinking it'd be funny if the great Stone Dragon Spirit went out of Mulan and she had vague memory of what happened because she was almost sidelined for that movie and the second. She has like part of the memory but she becomes back to how she was originally so she's not this courageous girl that she became became girl she was cuz it wasn't fully her
I think that Khan and Crickie might both be guardians for Mulan along with Mushu. I think Crickie might have just become another guardian for Mulan when he was originally supposed to just be a good luck charm, he became more of a guardian for Mulan along with Khan.

I think that mulan has a guardian. Her because when mushu goes and tries to wake up the great stone Dragon he dosent wake up because he is all ready wake (that's my thought)

For whatever reason, I thought he may have belonged to one of the ancestors that was a warrior. Rather it would be classified as reincarnation (over and over), eternal life or what other types of myths and beliefs of old in ancient China would have explained it. It was just something I thought of for the same reason than believe he'd a guardian (which does make better sense).

did u actually WATCH the movie? it was made very clear another Dragon was going in Mushu place and that he was demoted after he failed and one of the answers was beheaded he snuck out deceitfully called himself mulan's Guardian and why you don't acknowledge that is complete bungkus

Does anyone realize that Mushu wasn’t the dragon that was summoned to watch upon Mulan? Mushu was only called upon to WAKE UP the great dragon. Remember that stone dragon at the beginning? Yeah that was suppose to be Mulan’s guardian and to bring her home but Mushu didn’t do anything right. He went to retrieve her and then let her continue to PROVE A POINT TO THE SPIRITS!!!! So yeah, just remember that.

Some food for thought: Mulan is not the one who truly saved China. Mushu is.
If he hadn't delivered those forged orders, their unit wouldn't have been at the mountain pass to cause the avalanche in the first place, for Mulan to have had her victory there.

It also makes sense since you see all these guardians but along them you rarely see a horse meaning they arrive from stone instead of just being a spirit, hence when Mushu's stone isn't there if he was previously a guardian. If he guardians appeared in spirit, Mushu's stone would most likely be there.
