    IRL, I am a 42 year old electrical engineer. While watching your videos, I am a 12 year old kid trying to keep my jaw off the floor. You've created some really interesting projects and it is great seeing how far you've progressed over the years. Keep it up. The rap at the beginning was nerdy and wonderful too.

    For efficiency science: Ask the plane to maintain an altitude that's out of ground effect and compare energy consumption against maintaining an altitude that's in ground effect? That would give you a measure like "minimum energy required to maintain level flight", which is a pretty useful metric for a ground-effect vehicle. Even if you get different speeds out of that comparison, you could still make a useful claim about energy required to travel between two waypoints.

    • @gi295
      @gi295 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The faster you go, the more the drag. The difference in efficiency because of speed is very substantial, more so than the ground effect

    • @lukearts2954
      @lukearts2954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gi295 which only makes it another part of the power consumption. If the plane reaches different speeds for the same "effort", then that's a base to start fine tuning the experiments. Start of with a maximum of parameters the same and measure overall consumption and speed (time between A and B), then tune parameters to achieve same speed (match the lowest of the two). Also, with such a small plane, I'm guessing it will be bouncing in and out of ground effect, which will have a slight effect on airspeed and drag too, so a variable consumption due to different drag is already happening within the same flight anyway.
      I agree with Saul that this would be the best approach to determine efficiency gain from ground effect.

    • @TheVirIngens
      @TheVirIngens 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      what would be even cooler: an extremum seeking controller, maybe as an extra layer feeding a setpoint to the lower level PID ontroller, which measures energy use in real time and chooses the most efficient altitude to fly at

    Would it be possible add a pressure sensor on the underside and top of the wings to measure what's going on? No idea if it would be useful, but you might be able to correlate it to efficiency, or factor it into the Ardupilot controller. Might just be a cool thing to see.

    Three thoughts:
    1. Awesome project, series, and music
    2. Turning altitude problem: Are you rectifying the lidar altitude measurement with roll attitude? Maybe even dial in some additional compensation with roll to account for the lower wing too
    3. Flying over waves: With the lidar pointing directly down, your system is reactive and not so proactive in handling disturbances in measured altitude; meaning, you measure a high wave, your controller pitches up, but you've already passed the wave. How about pointing the lidar forward at an angle to get a 'look-ahead' measurement? Better yet, mount the lidar as far forward as possible on a stick out the nose. The distance to cancel out phase delay of the wave/vehicle reaction would entirely be dependent on the length of the stick, or your total control bandwidth. Could be a fun problem to solve on video :)

    2. A way to control the speed in ground effect by allowing the auto-pilot to adjust the pitch and throttle.

    Have you considered positioning two lidar sensors, each at the wingtip? With this you could take average out of the two, and on turns use the sensors to prevent wing strikes. My knowledge on lidar is limited so I don't for certain whether it would work.

    • @arnavpawar256
      @arnavpawar256 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Actually it would work, but it's not necessary. He can also make a code to increase the altitude / lidar distance value when the aircraft is turning to avoid wing strikes.

    • @paulosbusulas6623
      @paulosbusulas6623 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      when its turning the lidar measures the hypotenuse of a right triangle so based on the turn angle and the distance measured you can calculate the distance from the ground

    • @arnavpawar256
      @arnavpawar256 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it would be better to place one sensor at the tail or in the center, and one sensor at the nose, and it should be at an angle of about 45 degrees forward. So it can tell the plane if a big wave is approaching. If it's not angled, then it would detect a big wave too late and the plane will hit the wave.

    • @jlondon1441

      What about flared wing tips? Upwards to run parallel to the ground/water level in turn. Forcing planes higher and sort of fight the roll with increasing pressure as it rotates into the ground effect. Might make turns wider but also might add another safety against turning into the water or ground.

    Outstanding work Daniel! On the topic of analyzing efficiency: You could integrate the power over time to get energy, and the speed to get distance. Keeping separate integrals for each mode, in-ground vs. out-of-ground effect. The ratio of total energy to total distance would then represent how far the plane could go for a given amount of energy for each mode. This should account for the nonlinearity in the relationship between speed and power. Keep the great videos coming!

    Man, this was really an incredible video. I liked it a lot, and I can't imagine the amount of work that must have gone into it. I can't wait to see what you do next.
    Speaking of what you do next, how about an autonomous submarine of some kind? That could make for some interesting footage. Also, since I love your autonomous boat content so much, how about an autonomous sailboat? I would love to see what you do with it! I love all your work, great stuff all around.
