You forgot that when flying this craft was not restricted to flying over water. It can fly over land also. I believe it's max altitude was 500ft. It was also capable of carrying indecent amounts of cargo/ordnance.
Scrat335 Ground effect exists only at an altitude equal to the wingspan of an aircraft, and is only pronounced within one-half the wingspan. To fly at 500 feet this Ekronoplan would have had to have a wingspan 4 times that of a 747.

I know nothing of the shipping industry but it seems like having a few of these in the cargo fleet as well as all our usual shipping container ships would be super beneficial, I have no idea how, I just think it’d be cool.
I agree. There needs to be faster ship travel that is commercialized. We have been dealing same slow cruises for decades. If we can get planes to fly in the air at high speeds I’m sure we can come up with faster water travel.

We travel a lot on the sea here in Greece. And hydrofoil ships, (we call them Dolphins), are popular here. It would be the coolest thing to see and travel with an Ekranoplan! These things look so futuristic, even today. It is a real shame what happened to this program and its creator. Hope we see something like this in the future. I would definitely pay to ride on one.
But fast catamarans powered by water jets like those made by Incat have made hydrofoils, hovercraft and even ekronoplans obsolete. Fast cats are cheaper to build, much cheaper to operate, give a smoother ride to passengers and the big ones can operate at up to 100 kmh. Sometimes a simpler idea is better than hugely complex engineering.
Ground effect is very intriguing when it comes to managing aero. It provides lift if you’re in a plane; it provides a vacuum of downforce if you’re in a car (albeit a car with ground effect channels). In 2022 f1 will introduce new regulations for allowing the return of ground effect due to other rules that will simplify aero on the from and rear wings.

After a perfect test, the pilot made a mistake, led to the wing and crashed the ekranoplan against water. It is currently at the bottom of the Caspian.... But it is only a gossip. There is no official information
The ekranoplanes ceased releasing, because Gorbachev, by his treacherous decision, included this program and some other promising Soviet technologies in the strategic arms reduction treaty, so they simply stopped releasing them. 16:45 (th-cam.com/video/VJImXVBqv7s/w-d-xo.html) After the collapse of the alliance in the 90s, the country plunged into chaos, people often weren’t just eating, so it wasn’t up to eranoplanes, it’s good that now everything has changed dramatically, part of the program has been restored, but something was just created from 0. The CM tests took place in the Caspian for 15 years until 1980. In 1980, due to a piloting error, the CM crashed, there were no casualties, the ekranoplan after the accident remained afloat for another week, but no attempts were made to save it, after which it sank [2]. No operations to raise, restore or build a new copy of the CM were carried out. One of the Lun ekranoplanes (42.881830,47.657284) will be demilitarized and transferred to the museum of the Patriot Park in the city of Derbent (th-cam.com/video/Hf7zFE2CjG0/w-d-xo.html ) (to translate the subtitles, we press the following: subtitles button, settings button, in the menu that opens, click subtitles, translate - select the language)
@Master Robotnik Soviet Union was not in a structural crisis before Gorbachev's catastrophic economic reforms of 1987-88 (Law on State Enterprises, Law on Cooperatives) and his political reforms of 1988 to 1990 (new parliamentary institutions and the end of the CPSU monopoly on power). If not for the Gorbachev faction of reformers in the USSR, even if the country remained stagnant and conservative for a few more years, the powerful implications of the computing revolution for Soviet planning would have been immense, and easily guaranteed the country's stability and prosperity well into the 21st century.

How interesting. I can't help being drawn to the idea even though I've just seen all the difficulties that need to be overcome. Imagine a small nimble one flying around picking off all sorts of water craft.
Imagine a slower (about 200 km/h) "ekronoplan", optimized for fuel efficiency and range. It could compete with cruise ships. 4 square meter cabins for a couple, would not be as comfortable as those in a cruise ship, but being able to cross the atlantic in fewer than 2 days, would certainly be tempting for people who dislike the cramped seats of an airplane.

@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409 Big ground effect vehicles can carry more cargo per unit dry mass than traditional planes, that means lower fuel costs, and in theory cheaper and more competitive operation. There might be a niche between the efficiency of boats and the speed of aircraft that a ground effect cargo vehicle could take up. They are no more limited in operation than boats are.
@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409 "factor in weather and maintenance" I'm not quite sure what your point is. Planes, boats, and ground effect vehicles are all affected by weather and all require maintenance, that's not unique to the latter. "land locked areas" Indeed, boats are also incapable of reaching landlocked areas, which is why I suggested ground effect vehicles as an intermediate between boats and aircraft, faster than boats, but with a worse payload to mass ratio, and slightly slower than planes, but with a greater payload to mass ratio. They are neither better than planes, nor are they inferior, they simply fill a different niche. Comparing the two is like comparing bicycles and cars.
@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409 I mean as a fast attack craft they're pretty much unparalleled. Planes can be faster but they require air superiority to use and can't carry similar cargo loads as fast, meaning they can carry less missiles and smaller ones. Planes also fly at heights where they can be detected by radar. This thing can carry about as much munitions as a ship but faster and without being detected easily.
@@hedgehog3180 to be fair though, if it does get detected by surface radar (ultimately ekranoplan would still be detected by surface radar, that's better than aircraft... but worse than the range ships can be detected by radar), then things are going to be very dicey for it... it's fast... for a ship or even hydrofoil vessels, but still not faster than aircraft to escape against one (or against anti aircraft weaponry) so unlike aircraft it can't simply enter and escape anti aircraft weapon bubble. and it's payload is large against aircraft... but a missile boat smaller than half it's size can carry 2/3 it's missile complement so in terms of maximum missile saturation salvo, missile boats are still better bang for buck. a missile boat doesn't exactly stand that much of a chance if engaged by aircraft or warship, but they DO have some chance owing to their small size and agility .. some even have CIWS mounted on them so while their chance is not great if they are detected, they do have a chance to survive. ekranoplan have none of that, given it's size and inability to maneuver.
@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409 Lun was developed as an aircraft carriers killer, thats why they arent used since USSR collapse. USSR was the only one who really need that type of weaponry - countries like China or India doesnt have mediterranean seas where that type of weaponry could be effectively used and countries that does dont need it cause they already in alliance with USA which is main aircraft carrier operator. Other uses of Ekranoplan are as sea/ice rescue vehicle, Extreme North or inland navigation transport vehicle and as a fire fighter. Sure, as regular sea transport its inefficient.

I do think a lot of the difficulty in controlling it can be easily solved with modern computerized controllers. If we can solve the physical limitations the controlling apsects should be easy to tackle with today's tech.
No. To control an aircraft, you need a control surface. For conventional 'planes, they bank; that's how they get the force and acceleration for a turn. If you can't get the ekranoplan to bank (which you can't, because it has to stay in that thin layer of ground effect in order to fly), your only option would be some huge vertical fins. Information processing cannot make up for lack of physical means.
Wtf dude, I was literally doing research on Ekranoplans this afternoon after remembering reading about them a few years ago, and then I see you upload this video in the evening.
If you're shipping heavy materials or goods your cost of shipping will always be much less expensive than air. This plane could carry the heavy weights at the speed of a conventional aircraft.
@@TheFrogInYourClosetWatchingYou if you watched till the end you would have known if it was made bigger then it would be feasible as modern cargo "ships"
Note .... the ecranoplan in general can be called a flying ship, when the water is stable, it can rise from the sea surface when it is traveling at high speed thanks to the turbines in the front where its front and rear wings act like a huge plane, but when the sea water is unstable, it behaves like a ship but at a high speed thanks to its streamlined design The Ekranoplan is used to transport the largest number of soldiers or armored vehicles to the beaches in a short time during the landing, instead of using other means such as transport planes.

There is actually an almost-finished second Lun-class named Spasatel
Spasatel was originally started as a Lun-class but after the loss of 42 sailors in the K-278 Komsomolets disaster in 1989 (34 of those deaths were people who made it off the sub but died of hypothermia before rescue could make it to them) it was revised to be a giant Marine Search and Rescue Craft, sort of a high-speed ambulance ship able to respond to that sort of disaster faster.
It's mothballed now, but in decent condition and every so often people float the idea of finally finishing Spasatel and putting it to use.

Big ground effect vehicles can carry more cargo per unit dry mass than traditional planes, that means lower fuel costs, and in theory cheaper and more competitive operation. There might be a niche between the efficiency of boats and the speed of aircraft that a ground effect cargo vehicle could take up. They are no more limited in operation than boats are.
@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409
"factor in weather and maintenance"
I'm not quite sure what your point is. Planes, boats, and ground effect vehicles are all affected by weather and all require maintenance, that's not unique to the latter.
"land locked areas"
Indeed, boats are also incapable of reaching landlocked areas, which is why I suggested ground effect vehicles as an intermediate between boats and aircraft, faster than boats, but with a worse payload to mass ratio, and slightly slower than planes, but with a greater payload to mass ratio.

It would be quite a sight, a gigantic boat-plane coming into port. The sound would be incredibly loud though having engines powerful enough to get enough thrust to lift a cruise ship. Awesome concept, very complicated to get right
Orion Sagano - All fair points. But then again if Boeing ever takes the idea on we'll be fine. They haven't flinched in the past when it comes to sacrificing and risking lives due to one or two faults on planes.
But seriously, if it was treated with care it could be great, if they actually took the time to work out every fault and every potential circumstance. Plus it would need both naval and aviation engineers working together, rather than just aviation
@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409 Sounds to me like a challenge to design one to NOT destroy itself when it hits a wave, and to be capable of at LEAST doing so regularly during a single flight without problem.
@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409 As was pointed out in the video, the larger the ekranoplan is, the higher it can go above water level and still make use of the ground effect. So if you made one big enough, it'd have little to fear from waves even in the Atlantic.

That thing i still toast if it gets hit by a wave
@@dirckthedork-knight1201 plus the turning issues.

"a ship that could move as fast as an aircraft by lifting itself out of the water"
so... an airplane?
think cargo capacity of planes vs ships
If you're shipping heavy materials or goods your cost of shipping will always be much less expensive than air. This plane could carry the heavy weights at the speed of a conventional aircraft.
@@TheFrogInYourClosetWatchingYou if you watched till the end you would have known if it was made bigger then it would be feasible as modern cargo "ships"
Except that it never leaves ground effect.
@@TheFrogInYourClosetWatchingYou eh, bigger airplanes doesn't mean better...unlike the ekranoplan.
Note .... the ecranoplan in general can be called a flying ship, when the water is stable, it can rise from the sea surface when it is traveling at high speed thanks to the turbines in the front where its front and rear wings act like a huge plane, but when the sea water is unstable, it behaves like a ship but at a high speed thanks to its streamlined design The Ekranoplan is used to transport the largest number of soldiers or armored vehicles to the beaches in a short time during the landing, instead of using other means such as transport planes.
