Making lists is a great way to stay organized, I'm still in the stoneage and just use a pen and paper. Physically scratching out items on lists after you finish something is the best feeling ever. :)
I speak for your 70,000 subscribers when i say: We all love your voice! If anyone comments "ur voice is annoying" don't listen to them. Like i wish you just made hour long videos of you talking. It doesn't matter what it is just talk pls xD you could literally film itself eating cereal for 10 minutes and we would all thoroughly enjoy it.
I stayed home sick today and literally sat here all day watching your videos, lolol (especially all of the graphic design ones). But I feel like I've been productive gaining all of this knowledge! Great job!
it amazes me how much you get done! I started making a schedule last week, it seems to be working, thanks for the tips Karen, the email filter idea is genius!
The tips you show within Google was so helpful. I am a stay at home Mom and I was able to organize, catorgrize, and set up new features on my account. Thank you for sharing.
Pretty much every day I make a list on my phone in the reminders app. I also have been using google calendar more recently. But the Gmail trick I wasn't able to figure out until this video! This has helped me TONS! Thanks!!
I LOVE to-do lists too. I swear by them! just found your channel and so pleased I did :) I make videos about design too! So cool to find another designer on here!
Karen, you give very good practical advice. Watching you video I see how I can organize my time better, so I can find my niche in graphic design. Thank you. You do great videos. Shalom
Watching Veronica Mars is always productive. Always.......... but seriously great video and thanks so much for sharing! I'm a newbie freelancer who is trying to get things started, I'm absorbing any advice I can get, so thank you!
So helpful! I like the idea of Google docs; my to-do lists are always all over the place (often illegible), so it'll be nice to have one master list. Thank you for this!
Just wanted to say thank you for the tip for making the to-do list a Google Doc. I had been struggling to find a method that would work - tied to an email program that I do not like for work, but losing paper to-do lists. Google Docs hadn't occurred to me! I had such a productive day, my stress is reduced already.
I've been super overwhelmed with trying to get organised and deciding whether or not to do all my organising paperless but that's not really practical for me so I have to do a bit of both and have been using some calendar apps on my ipad but they're not exactly what I wanted so when you mentioned Google calendars I searched that on the app store thinking they had an app but apparently not but instead I found a brilliant calendar app(which syncs with google calendar) and you have the ability to drag&drop events, it's something I'd been wishing for in a calendar app but had yet to see! haha this is super rambly but if I hadn't watched this video I wouldn't have found this app it's called iCalendar and now you've inspired me to make the switch from outlook to gmail and google calendar! Thankyou!
I have a sticky note on my mac that serves as the to-do list…it keeps everything from my daily meetings to when my family and close friends have their birthdays! Super helpful and just like your google doc :)
This really helps! I just keep everything in my head, because paper planners never work. And apps don't work. But your idea seems to work, so ill try it out!
I use a Google doc in the form of a spread to stay on top of school work and life stuff. The numbers going down are for the dates and I have one column for each class and one column for non-school related tasks. Stuff that I have yet to do is marked in red, and once it's been completed, I mark it in green, and once the grade has been posted online, I'll delete it. It's really satisfying to be able to mark something green and by the end of the day, have no red left on the current day. And yes, Google services are just perfect for this kind of stuff, since you can access them anywhere. Google Drive is my life lol
I use google calendar too! That way I don't forget any bookings I have for work, or work shifts, since they're not the same every week. I can also see if I'll be available months in advance, once I put in my uni schedule. And I put in social stuff too, so I don't miss those.
I'm impressed that you can stay organized strictly digitally! I feel like I need to physically write things down to be truly meaningful, therefore I love my planner. I can use different pens and highlighters :) Google is definitely the most useful for collaborating with others though. Good tips!
You know, sometimes it just helps your organisation by having someone telling you how to do it. That google doc may just get me through high school. Many thanks from me Karen :)
Great tips! I don't make my to-do list that detailed (take out the trash, etc)- it makes it feel more overwhelming for me, but that's just a personal preference. I might try it once and see how I like it! Thanks for the Gmail tips! I always have too many emails, so I am really going in (right now!) to start setting up filters. I hope it helps! Also, I use the Google Docs for freelance work stuff to keep organized and I share it with my clients- they love it! I totally agree!
Loved the ideas. Total list girl here. Make lists for everything! Also, thanks for the heads-up on your second channel. You have another subscriber. Hugs
My to do list is badass, its a proper timetable! And my lists & notes are in the mac notes app, (My mac isn't my main computer, its the laptop I take around with me) because it allows you to make different folders of notes, and the folders inside the folders! :)
Great tips; I'll have to find a way to use them when I start teaching! Also, I became mesmerized by your hair 3/4 of the way into the video, it's like liquid gold with the ombre and high/low-lights. Or is it just the lighting?
Can you share a tip on how you manage your money? I am sure if you stay organized, you might be organized with your budget too. I want a tip to manage for savings, groceries, dining, shopping, paying rents and daily things like electric, etc as well as future plans such as travelling, movies, anything so we can balance our budget to get a better life.
Those are some great ideas! My family (me, husband, two-year-old) Have a crazy shedual (Hope I spelled that correctly, my brain went blank). I commute for two hours each way for school (graphic design, yay!) And we have work, who needs to pick up the two-year-old in kindergarden, and so on and so forth. Google calendar is really important to keep track of all that.
Out of all the organizational videos I've watched, this one was the best by a landslide. Super glad Louise from SprinkleofGlitter recommended your channel =D
Good inspiration. I think I'm too fond of stationary and paper calenders to only put stuff down electronically. I also like to have times where I don't need to look at a screen to be productive. That typically leads to procrastination for me. The Google doc is a good idea, though. :)
Only thing about google docs that doesn't work for me is that it requires me to be online to access it. So i prefer using iCal in the same way instead and colour coding each activity (work, school, home, social)
Very helpful video! I too am a lover of Google's products and have been using Gmail's filters for years (and LOVE THEM! It was quite epiphany for me when I found them, haha). But I see that the have a new inbox layout that separates out social, promotion, etc. from the primary inbox. Have you started using this? I just started using it today and don't quite know what to think of it (not sure if it will break me away from my other filters or not).
I do pretty much the same thing, except I use Yahoo! Mail (I know, but it's too much trouble to change my email address), iCal, and physical paper lists - it's more satisfying for me to cross something off physically than to delete it.
I need to do this, but I suck at staying organized and this will help so much. I love the starred email tip! My to-do lists are also everywhere, so it would make life so much easier if I make a googledocs. Thanks for this :)
I write out all of my upcoming assignments and tests in my school agenda. I also use Sticky Notes on Windows to make all sorts of lists. On my desktop I have Sticky Notes for tv guides, things to do by date, places I might want to travel to next, my friends and family Myers-Brigg test scores, filed placements I might want to choose for college, diet plan, celebs who are the same age as me and a random list with passwords and addresses. I know I'm a list maker and some of them are really weird.
I use something similar to google docs, Evernote. Because I teach myself a language I can write down what I need to do each day and it's on my iPod or computer whenever I need it.
Hi Karen! Your videos helped me like a LOT! I`m studying graphic design and your tips and advices help me a lot. :) Thank you for sharing your knowings, please make a video about bleeding and stuff like that :P Keep the good work
Hi Karen, thanks for sharing your secrets. Although I don't get to make my to-do list for work because my boss gives it to me :) : ) . I should try this for my weekend exploits :) Love you videos.
I like your Google Docs ToDo list, but, depending on how important / significant a task is/was, I don't (generally) delete completed items, at least not right away. So I'll initially mark a completed task like: Tuesday 12/31/99 [ ] Blah blah task [x] Finish that thing you love to do [x] Finish that thing you hate to do [x] Blah blah task... That way, later, if I need to know if a task was completed, or when it was completed, like "I know I sent that FAX, but when?", I can look back through recent days in my ToDo list. On the other hand, if you're moving completed items to another list, that works too.
Google is my organizational saviour. Inbox filters, calendars, drive. Yes to all of it. My colour coded google calendar is my everything. But what I am really interested in: You get NINE hours of sleep a night!??! I assume this is easier when you freelance, but I would have to be asleep by 11pm to do that. And some days, because of my work schedule, I don't get home until 10pm. and just. ugh. I want 9 hours of sleep a night.
I usually go to sleep at midnight and wake up naturally between 8 and 9am. When I had a set work schedule with a full time job, I didn't get quite as much on weekdays since I had to get up earlier.
I'm going to look into google more, didn't know you could do all that! Brilliant thanks. ps I sometimes send myself an email about something I need to do, putting the task in the title I then don't open it until I've done the task which means the email count is never 0 which bugs me
how do you guys even deal with lists?!? i have nvr been organized... ever! and i always wonder how others deal with these kinds of organizing methods...
I really like the idea of doing a to-do list in a Google Doc...I've been struggling with figuring out a good way to keep track of mine because I just don't like any of the to-do list apps...I think I'll do that!
Holy heck! As an unorganized high school student, this helps a lot!
I agree!
Yay, organization!

Karen Kavett i just subscribed!!!

Great advice Karen, thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for watching!
I love all of your videos especially Graphic Design Videos and can't believe how knowledgeable you are. I learn a lot through them. Thanks!

That GMail filter... WHY HAVE I BEEN IGNORING IT THIS ENTIRE TIME. Karen, you are my saviour. I'm gonna go and filter my cluttered email now, thanks!!
I used to have it in a notepad document, but the Google doc is great since it syncs to all your devices!
Just wanted to say thank you for the tip for making the to-do list a Google Doc. I had been struggling to find a method that would work - tied to an email program that I do not like for work, but losing paper to-do lists. Google Docs hadn't occurred to me! I would not survive without lists!!! If I don't make a list I won't get ANYTHING done.

I have a sticky note on my mac that serves as the to-do list…it keeps everything from my daily meetings to when my family and close friends have their birthdays! Super helpful and just like your google doc :)
I carry around my own organizer/notebook around and mark down all deadlines in red. Has helped me tremendously in college.
Wow you are well organized and you have so much energy. Lol I need to be more like you this is the first time on your channel. Thank You for sharing.😉
This really helps! I just keep everything in my head, because paper planners never work. And apps don't work. But your idea seems to work, so ill try it out!
I love google calendar. I use it to organize my schedule all the time. I really should look into using google docs for to do lists.
This is awesome - i love how happy you are!!
You had me hooked at 9 hours of sleep a night
I use a Google doc in the form of a spread to stay on top of school work and life stuff. The numbers going down are for the dates and I have one column for each class and one column for non-school related tasks. I'm a student juggling a LOT of coursework right now, and this really helped me relax and figure out how to break down my huge workload! Thanks! :D
Awesome, good luck with your school work!
Thank you! :D

Yup, as soon as I started using Google Calendar I just felt so much more organized.
Great advice, Karen! I learned a lot about little hacks to make staying organized even easier - the filters look incredibly useful :)
Wow, great and kind of obvious way of making a working to do list. I'm totally trying that out!
I'm impressed that you can stay organized strictly digitally! I feel like I need to physically write things down to be truly meaningful, therefore I love my planner. I can use different pens and highlighters :)
Google is definitely the most useful for collaborating with others though. Good tips!
You know, sometimes it just helps your organisation by having someone telling you how to do it. That google doc may just get me through high school. Many thanks from me Karen :)
Definately just made a bunch of gmail filters. I always forget that feature exists.
I wish I had a lifestyle like this so I could be as organised as you!
I've been using Google docs and Pinterest to stay organized with my wedding planning. Man, I love the internet.
Great ideas. Thanks for posting.
this is so so helpful Karen! Thank you!!
I know this is super old but i am excited to use the gmail filters more!! Thanks for this!
Loved the ideas. Total list girl here. Make lists for everything! Also, thanks for the heads-up on your second channel. You have another subscriber. Hugs
Awesome, I hope you like my videos over there :)
Whoa, you've got a lot going on, that's pretty cool. I definitely admire how committed you are to organization :)

Love your tips on Gmail filters. Always bogged down by updates from social media/ mailing list. Thanks!
This video was incredibly helpful, thank you so much Karen :)
Great! I didnt trust on google docs but it seems so easy and neat! I love to do lists! Thank you!!! :)

I need this organization to happen within my "day" it's past due but needed... ASAP!
Thanks!

Love it!!!! And you mention u moving to LA. That's awesome! I also live in the LA area well kinda I live in Pasadena the city of roses.

Simple, useful, to the point.
Wish you well on the move.
When you said 'stay vigilant', all I could think of was CONSTANT VIGILANCE!
Mad Eye Moody would be proud :)
I love being organized Cannot work last minute ....... Like your methods .Nice video
Great video. Watching ages after it was filmed but still helpful! Defo setting up Gmail filters!
This was quite helpful :) I started the gmail labels a little over a year ago
I do pretty much the same thing, except I use Yahoo! Mail (I know, but it's too much trouble to change my email address), iCal, and physical paper lists - it's more satisfying for me to cross something off physically than to delete it.

Awesome, I'm glad it helped!
Ampersands everywhere! I love it. :)
Great video! Definitely not as busy as you, so I have less to organize, but this was still super helpful!
I write out all of my upcoming assignments and tests in my school agenda. I also use Sticky Notes on Windows to make all sorts of lists. I've heard a lot about Evernote but I've never used it. I'm glad it works for you!
I need to organize my bookmarks and my emails...dreading it.

Love you videos.
Thank you so much! Love your video
A video on not just filters but organizing your gmail and getting it under control would be excellent.

Oh my gosh!!! I love ur necklace, where did u get it
I love organizational tips! Can you do an in-depth video about how to create filters in gmail?
I'm designing a cd cover case based on the outsiders for school. Any helpful tips?
Great tips
!!!! thank you!
You are so incredibly likable on camera! :3

I do the exact same thing to keep up with readings and homework...
I only wish I'd watch this during my exams!!
I love this video and you really look similar to sue from the middle x
how do you guys even deal with lists?!? i have nvr been organized... ever! and i always wonder how others deal with these kinds of organizing methods...
NINE HOURS HOLY SHIT
What great organizational ideas!! 9 hours of sleep each night? Sounds dreamy. I think a lot of people forget how important sleeping is -__- zZZzzzZZ
Thanks,great tips.
I really like the idea of doing a to-do list in a Google Doc...I've been struggling with figuring out a good way to keep track of mine because I just don't like any of the to-do list apps...I think I'll do that!
Evernote is also good for that :)
Keyholder Or Google Keep, a tiny alternative to Evernote.
