  • In this time-lapse style video I show the process of renovating the valve cover on the M20 engine. A follow up to my E30 valve adjustment video. Makes a big difference to the overall look of the engine bay and all it takes is about $30 in materials. I used Rust-Oleum high-heat automotive spray paints including a primer, black enamel, and gloss clear, applying 3 coats of each. I followed can directions for drying time, aprox. 24 hrs including time between coats, and covered the engine head with a garbage bag during that time.
Make sure you take your time and clean the cover as good as you can from all contaminants. You only get one shot to prep the surface which is the most important step and where I spent most of the time. The painting step is the easy part if you follow directions and can be forgiving with the many coats. Im no expert with the spray can as you will see on the video and it still came out great.

Good DIY job but I would have put a couple of coats of clear over the whole thing after sanding the emblem and inner section

Good idea. I can still do it, just need to get it cleaned really good.

Protip.. While the paint is still tacky (10 mins after last coat) you can take that black layer off with your trusty yellow scraper. A sliver undercoat make for perfection. Other wise good job. New subscribe.

Really nice job man... Good to see how you did that sanding... It looks like you used 2 different kinds of sand paper, what were they? Thanks again

I used 3M sand paper, 120 first and then 150 grit

The best clear coat that you can get is the "OH MY" 2k clear from BuyCustomPaint.com. A HS clear that's really easy to spray with a high gloss, and doesnt require cutting or buffing and the small kits start at $30..... Definitely worth checking out...good video

    No gasket required?

You definitely need a gasket and I installed a brand new one. You can see it on the valve adjustment video.
