Good info! I’m an American living in Mexico. My adult daughter is a Mexican and US citizen, but she is in the process of getting her Spanish citizenship. Her grandmother is a Spanish citizen and apparently my daughter qualifies for citizenship because of that. So, I was wondering if that will allow me to get residency in Spain. Once my daughter gets her Spanish citizenship.
I'm from Spain and or course I've been living here since I was born but, even though I love watching your videos as it is so interesting to know how foreign people see Spain and how you and others interact here being from another country
To me is very interesting to see how Spanish citizens see other countries. The Spanish citizens view of Spain is really really bad, I just came from Paris (second time visiting Paris) and my colleagues from work were very exited and asking me: how was it? Paris is so beautiful, no? Bla bla bla and I am like: I am sorry, I like Madrid way better… and they made fun of me, like it was something absolutely impossible, because most of them think that Paris is way better than Madrid… People here also ask me WHY DID YOU MOVE FROM CANADA? 🤷🏻♀️ Spaniards think Canada is heaven on earth, I guess because they never lived or visited there. Spaniards don’t appreciate Spain and underestimate their beautiful country! Yes, with many issues, but that’s everywhere. I am not saying YOU are like this, but many ppl are!
I agree with you, I'm from Madrid and I love it but I used to not realize how beautiful it is... or much less than visitors... and then I started traveling to many different countries and cities and now I think finally I realize how incredible this city is@@vanpak

As an expat, huge thanks for emphasizing learning the LANGUAGE. It's responsible for like 80% of a successful integration. Without the language you will stay a forever alien just wondering around like a tourist. With language, you can socialize, learn more about the culture, history, traditions, etc. I would give another 15% for finding a fitting job and living space (town and apartment) but the rest 5% is basically paperwork and such.
This is so true! I’ve lived in USA and Canada, both countries have so many immigrants that don’t speak the local language… in Canada I’ve seen many people becoming Canadian citizens that can’t have a conversation in English (I was on the English side) I helped ppl, with documentation, doctors, dentist, Canadian citizens that can’t speak English! I created a free English practice, it was online, ask who joined, few people! =[ I lived in USA to learn English, in 6 months I was speaking, when I moved to Canada I was already fluent, now I am in Spain and although I use very minimal Spanish on my daily life, but I have the very minimal to have a conversation in Spanish, for shopping, for doctors, dentist and to connect to my local friends! Learning the language is key for success as an immigrant anywhere!

Learning Spanish since some time and being active in the community of language learning people. I realized that actually literally everyone who says you don't need to learn the grammar you can learn the language "like children do" only by listening and speaking with your very bad Spanish, all of them are not getting it done and not having any respectable level of language. I think this switch has to happen in your mind, yes you have to learn a new language and yes it is a lot of work, its never easy to learn a new language, but it does not affect you at all if you in love with that language and with culture and people of the country you would like to move in.

Excellent video James! I’m from the US and my girlfriend is from Málaga. Planning our permanent move to Fuengirola in the next few years. The US tax code for expats is plain and simple absurd. Just like the Hotel California, you can check out anytime you want, but can never leave 🤣 Anyway, I’ve been a follower of your channel for a while now and really learn a bunch form you and Yoli. We visit our apartment in Fuengirola every summer so maybe one day we’ll run into each other if you’re down south! I also wanted to second your comment about learning the language and would also add to anyone moving to Spain, learning the language and more than anything embracing the amazing Spanish culture will certainly make the Spaniards be a lot more open and helpful to you which in turn will make your transition a lot easier. Good luck!
You will always have Delaware LLC and the law that allows to incorporate in any state with the same tax advantages to avoid taxes, even if you are an employee, and not a business person, for your savings.
@@mitcoesWhy would I want to register as an LLC? I don’t own a business. The tax law in the US is nothing short of criminal. No US citizen should have to file or pay taxes if they generate their income outside of the US. Like he said on the video, only two countries in the world have this law; the US and Eritrea. And the law goes deeper than that, it can involve children even if not born in the US or a spouse married to a US citizen.

I just discovered this channel a couple of weeks ago and enjoy it. I lived in Spain from 19984-89 and loved it. I can see from your videos how the culture has change since my time there (i was shocked to see men in shorts LOL). The one thing I would like to add is that you really want to enjoy a good Paella, then you must take the time to visit Valencia. My ex-father-in-law was from there and while visiting him I had many Paellas in restaurants, in the small towns and in country villas. The paella in Valencia (since its the provincial dish), IMO, is better nowhere else. Also, my suggestion is to do it during Fallas. The small towns in the area are having fiestas (smaller versions of Fallas) and many of them cook very large paellas for the entire community. These people have been cooking paellas for generations and they are without a doubt the very best you can eat. Funny story, I just attended a Paella cooking class. It had shrimp and chorizo. I told the chef that during my time in Spain, I had never seen a chorizo paella. Maybe its and Andalusian version, but I tend to think it was an Americanized version. LOL Keep up the good work as it gives me a fresh view, from the U.S. into the country that I miss dearly.
Bravo James ! That was a very comprehensive video of vital information about moving here to Spain. I got to learn something new, even though I have been living in Spain nearly 3 years. I didn't know about Wise and their issues with larger transactions. I am glad you shared that. Very good video and excellent information !!! I would like to add that folks should not compare Spain to their home country and try to accept that Spain is a separate country with its own uniqueness. Many things will be better and some may not. Take the country as a whole package and you will enjoy this wonderful country a lot better.

Thanks so much, great advice. I'm an American interested only in spending part time in Spain when I retire, maybe 2 or 3 months at a time, but that might become a permanent stay . Sanitas has a very good English language portal and number for appointments. I’ve had nothing but a good experience with them. I can definitely understand going with a broker but this has been my experience
James, excellent advice and thanks for sharing! I can't comment because it's not something I've ever done, but it seems like a very good starting point. As with any big lifestyle choices, dot the T's and cross the I's, do your own homework and find reliable, recommended and professional experts to help you on your way. ❤ to you and your lovely family.
Thank you James, so much, there's a lot of stuff here to look at and at the very least you put it all in the context of actually doing it. Probably the most intimidating is the TAXES concerns and how to move money from USA to Spain once there. Sounds like Golden Visa is the most streamlined form of doing it, but for retired folks it's the Non-Lucrative Visa.

Sometimes learning Catalan, Galician, or Basque are more important than Castilian Spanish. It depends on where are you going to live. In Catalonia Valencia and Balearic Islands most people, and schools are in Catalan, and they are about 25% of Spaniards. Of course, they also know Castilian, but if you want to fit, better know that.
The one thing that is not clear to me is the wealth tax on worldwide assets. I’m looking to buy a in a small town / rural area within 1 to 4 hours or so from Barcelona, ideally. There are a lot of nice home for under €60k with 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms, 90 square meters and up. Initially, I’d move to Spain (non-lucrative visa) but go back to the US every couple of months for 2-3 weeks. My wife would move to Spain once she retires from her US govt career in a few years. Here in the US, me and my wife own (mortgage) a home with a current market value of around $1.5 million. How would Spain tax this asset? Values change-can go down as well as up…

We hired a company to do both the translations of the documents and the apostille now required in Canada. They sent the one document to the wrong place and after spending a fortune we now have to wait another 3 months for the federal government to process our document. Very frustrating and nope...they won't give the money back...To add insult to injury the government does not charge for the apostille process for that document.
Hi! I think the only one that really works is the first way to transfer money. If you move and send 20k us dollars or similar, you could have problems with any method than bank to another bank account. I have my sister there since 16 years and she said if I want to invest in a small store, the only way is with legalized money, i cant just convert it to cripto. Cripto is a 4th way wich is better than the other 3 in that case. I couldnt make a bussiness but I could buy stuff for myself, pay the rent and live. What do you think? Is mandatory i could invest
As far as banking and currency transfers, what about US banks that have branches in Spain, such Citibank, Chase (JP Morgan)…I do know that Citi allows account holders to transfer funds fee-free…but I I believe that the user needs to have accounts in both the US and Spain.

Do I just walk into a private hospital/healthcare center which Allianz have contract with and they’ll know I have insurance, or do I need to bring paperwork / talk to the insurer 1st?
Excellent advice! We were able to get the non-working visa by ourselves in 2023 and Facebook and TH-cam were essential in growing our knowledge base about the steps.
Americans are mentioned or featured so frequently because they have more scenarios of "getting it wrong" by being hit with double taxation, 'avoidable' higher taxation; or worse, punitive taxation and IRA penalties. It's not exclusionary of other countries' citizens, it's just cautionary to Americans!
Depends. If you’re coming from the US, for example, and you have a public pension from a job, such as being a teacher or police officer, then that won’t be taxed. But you’d need to speak to a tax advisor to truly understand your unique situation.

@@jpworldtrvlr9801 Perhaps it is not for you, but read how many LLC are registered. each day, it is not rare.
Us tax code for migrants
Only half way through this, and so much resonates - thank you very much for a great video.
Excellent and informative overview. Thank you.
Another exceptional honest, truly useful Video, anyone can learn something from, kudos 🎉
The complexity of spain immigration is the only thing that gives me some concern about making the move in 6 years. Good info!
How will cost me?Where i can the find a job in the studio for the comic artist,in the Spannish city, La Coruna? And how can i make the beggining for the new life in the Spain without a money and knowing the laguange, like adult?Whare i will life?
LOL
Keep up the good work as it gives me a fresh view, from the U.S. into the country that I miss dearly.
Thank you James .. great important video ....
you are right: it is better to pay for good advice than for fees or trouble
100%
Thanks!
Thank you, Gina!
Great video, thanks for all the information I'm from Puerto Rico but born in New York and thinking of moving to Spain me and hubby are retired.
I did learn Spanish by osmosis when I went to Salamanca for an Erasmus year. But my liver took a heavy hit when I lost a lot of drinking games for the first six months!
😉😊+Spanish = -liver 🍻

This is such a helpful video. Thank you, James and Yoli! We love your channel.
James, this is tremendous!! Thanks soooo much!
You might do a video on finding a reputable international mover. I had a very bad experience with International Sea and Air Shipping (hidden fees, missed deliveries, etc.).
This is a great video. Really good information. This is your best video yet.
Wow, thanks!
Thanks so much, great advice. I'm an American interested only in spending part time in Spain when I retire, maybe 2 or 3 months at a time, but that might become a permanent stay . I know a tourist visa will suffice but there are critical services I will need while staying there. Great channel, been a member for a few years.
Very useful, thank you, I’m checking both Spain and Greece, right now.
I think Spain is a good option for you
Quality information as always, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks James, your clear and efficient help if much appreciated
Sanitas has a very good English language portal and number for appointments. I’ve had nothing but a good experience with them. I can definitely understand going with a broker but this has been my experience
Good to know!
Im glad it was helpful!
Wise works awesome, the UI is beautiful and the exchange rate is great… but it’s true as soon as you need help you will find the customer service really sucks. I had similar experience with N26, worked great for years until it doesn’t and almost impossible to get help
Yeah that’s the issue. But for small amounts it’s really good
You are just amazing. Thank you so much for the wonderful videos!!!
Great video! Ready to rock n roll
Excellent advice, clearly explained. Thank you for sharing your extensive experience!
Superb video, James; clear and insightful
Glad you enjoyed it
You guys have educated us tremendously over the past few years, so thanks for all the work you do! I searched both various Facebook groups, and this comment section for any leads on currency brokers. Not Wise, rather person(s) who are currency brokers to help transfer a large amount for a house purchase. Thanks in advance!
Our pleasure!
This is a fantastic video. Thank you.
Perhaps a video on bringing animals to Spain.
Not difficult. Spain is not England. Vet check and rabies test from most countries will suffice.
Thank you! Nice video though there are points that cab be more tricky ib reality
Do EU immigrants wanting to stay long term need to speak with an immigration lawyer in your opinion? We need to understand how to manage our tax situation the best way possible but we don't need a VISA. Thanks for all your great content!
I am a dual citizen US and Spanish\EU. I have lived in the US all my life but will be moving to Spain permanently soon. I have been scouring the internet for advice and services for someone in my situation but cannot find anything as it all seems to be geared towards expats with visa scenarios and not expats who are also Spanish citizens.
If you’re a citizen of Spain, sounds pretty easy. Move there and live.

Excellent video, the reality of moving to another country. The process & adjusting!!
Great video! Definitely joining your masterclass!
Hi, I'm from the UK myself and my wife + 2 young kids (2 y/o and 9 y/o) are looking at moving to Spain. I will want to commute back to the UK every 2 weeks for work while my family live there. What would be the best visa to be on
Excellent video, James!
Love your channel.
When it comes to money, i would use paypal. They allow one user to have multiple forms of currency. I have a USD "wallet" and EU "wallet". The only problem is that some features like the high interest savings may be limited to USD
Thank you so much for all you do - you guys are super sweet!
Interesting what you say about money transfers is an issue, but I guess moving big amounts from another EU to Spain is not a big issue?
Another question. If you are living in United States as Franco American citizenship. Would live in Spain as French....how does the tax issue work there.
Excellent video, very informative 🎉😊
the property purchase aspect of golden visa is being stopped.
LOVED all the information, but my favorite part was where you pointed to the link, and it was on the other side of the screen.
Totally agree about learning the language! How do you say “buying agent” in Spanish?
Where's the coast location at 12:21 in the video? It looks beautiful
Galicians do not care what you speak.
Subtítulos en Español por favor , gracias
Values change-can go down as well as up…
Tengo pasaporte español, nacido y residente en Puerto Rico. Quisiera mudarme a España y hacerme residente, pero vivir con mis ingresos de Puerto Rico. Estos ingresos tributarían allá si me convierto en residente y ciudadano español?

Once I moved €14000 to Indonesia from ghetto Netherlands to pay off a home and it took 1 day and a phone call. That’s 13 months ago now so not at all a bad experience considering the problem was the Indonesian law asking what the money was about as a counter-terrorism law but not wise themselves
Taking your UK car is a terrible mistake. Loads of paperwork time and cost especially if you do not use a gestor.
I am not a doctor but you should go see a cardiologist to check your heart and your circulation system (nothing to do do with the dots)
I am a UK citizen but I live in NL and work for an International organization (non-tax payer). So if I applied for a DNV would I be liable for income tax in Spain?....
James, this is great info! Please no music in background. Unnecessary and distracting.
Great. I liked and had to subscribe.
Do you have recommendations on how to get a landlord to understand pay stubs to get approved for rent?
It can be challenging. Ideally you can speak Spanish or take someone who can and explain to them your finances. Or work with a relocation agent who provides these services.
Did anyone know about ecoutor institution Valencia?how is master in tourism management and it's economic impact course and opportunities
Now we have a Labour government, we all want to move to Spain.
Those services are expensive and total crap. Always making mistakes that take months to fix.
Spanish banks won't touch crypto.
Thank you sir.
As far as banking and currency transfers, what about US banks that have branches in Spain, such Citibank, Chase (JP Morgan)…I do know that Citi allows account holders to transfer funds fee-free…but I I believe that the user needs to have accounts in both the US and Spain.
Spain and US banks are not very friendly. Find an independent money transfer service. Do not even think of cashing a US bank cheque here.
I’ve just moved to Spain and my Spanish payroll company is paying me a private health insurance (Allianz). Do you guys know how do I what’s the process of using that? Do I just walk into a private hospital/healthcare center which Allianz have contract with and they’ll know I have insurance, or do I need to bring paperwork / talk to the insurer 1st?
i appreciate this video so much
Im glad it was helpful!
No coffee for this man. Chamomile.
Thank you! Great advice. Wondering if anyone can recommend an accountant here in Spain who can prepare US tax returns?
Yep, I can indeed. Drop me a line at hello@spainrevealed.com and I'll put you in touch.
Are there no Gestorias anymore?

Excellent advice! We were able to get the non-working visa by ourselves in 2023 and Facebook and TH-cam were essential in growing our knowledge base about the steps.
I love these videos but this entire channel is clearly geared towards Americans moving to Spain, no other countries get referenced besides the US
Americans are mentioned or featured so frequently because they have more scenarios of "getting it wrong" by being hit with double taxation, 'avoidable' higher taxation; or worse, punitive taxation and IRA penalties. It's not exclusionary of other countries' citizens, it's just cautionary to Americans!
No worries. Same rules apply.
What if you're living off non-taxable income? Will Spain tax that?
Depends. If you’re coming from the US, for example, and you have a public pension from a job, such as being a teacher or police officer, then that won’t be taxed. But you’d need to speak to a tax advisor to truly understand your unique situation.
