This is going to be wonderful during the fall! We love hot and sour soup and my BF is going to be impressed! Thank you Father and son Pang! I love your videos 🤩
I agree. I'm in Montana and it's just starting to come into autumn. In fact, I just passed my favorite Chinese food earlier and almost stopped for hot and sour soup 🍲
Man, one third bowl of egg drop soup, two-thirds bowl of the hot and sour, add 2-3 soup wontons, and I'm in seventh heaven, cloud nine. I love the title: Hunger Pangs.
I can tell by looking the hot and sour soup I loved when I lived in Boulder had the wood ear mushrooms. Oh how I miss that soup. I’m going to try this. Honestly don’t know if I can find those mushrooms here though.
I could eat this soup every day, IF made properly. It is always on a "chinese buffet" and terrible. This is a very easy recipe, but caution, go to an Asian market to get the ingredients at 20% of the price of the specialty section of your grocery. Can somebody help me? I had it a couple of times with a thing that looked like a slimy black flower or mushroom, what was that? I am a chef and cook all the french stuff, this is different. Never saw the cornstarch added to the egg but great idea. I drizzeled the egg to simmering soup, and one stir with one chop stick, it worked. This is more foolproof. Don't think they mentioned not to forget the green onion and the fried wonton noodles on top. Golly, thanks, you guys made my day! The very best soup in the WORLD.
That black flower of mushroom is the wood ear fungus that Mr. Pang showed as an alternative to the shiitake. My mother's recipe includes wood ear along with shiitake (dried is fine, if you can't find fresh). Just be sure to soak the wood ear before adding it to the soup. (Speaking of flower, some people also add dried lily buds. These are brown an usually tied into a knot before adding to the soup.)
This may come as a shock to some people, but my favorite soup is hot and sour soup with wontons. The broth that is used for wonton soup is in my opinion very Bland. My personal favorite way to eat wonton soup is to place the wontons from the wonton soup into a bowl of delicious hot and sour soup. Unfortunately, I have to do this at home because I have yet to find a Chinese restaurant here in Eastern Canada that will prepare me such a dish.
My favorite Chinese restaurant just closed due to retirement. Black Pearl in Shoreline, Washington. Best hot and sour soup. Have never eaten any other soup that matches it. They included tiny shredded pork and some black seaweed kind of stuff. Gonna miss that version of soup so much. But this recipe and steps give me hope to try and make my own. Thanks to the chef and tiny dragon. Whoops, dancing lion.
Thank you for this recipe video, we love hot and sour soup but many restaurants make it too thick or greasy. I made this today, loved the tip for the egg, I never knew how to get that silky texture when I make egg drop at home. I followed the recipe exactly but held back a little heat, knowing I could add more if needed and we loved it! Followed tips for the tofu and my tofu stayed intact while eating our soup, it did not fall apart like it has when not pressing it. Only thing I added, was about 1/8 tsp grated orange rind and thinly sliced garlic chives for garnish. Thanks again! It is delicious
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!!! It's my comfort 🍲 Soup and the Soup I crave when I have a cold and not feeling well. It's just the best! Thank you for showing me how to do this. I live in an area that DOESN'T DELIVER my favorite Hot and Sour Soup 🍲 so this is a Blessing. Much Love!💗
I go with dried mushrooms, both shiitake and wood ear (Chinese black fungus). Rinse them first quickly and then soak them, add some dried chilies to the soak if you like spice. Instead of using just plain water, use the water from your soak! That water is pure gold! I add konbu as well just to bump up the complexity of flavours. Definitely try to use white pepper. White vinegar is a decent substitute for black vinegar in a pinch, but black vinegar is a whole new level. I add it closer to the end so the flavour doesn't cook off. A great garnish is cilantro or chadon beni.
My fav local Asian joint closed just a couple of years ago (owner died) and I was never able to squeeze that H/S soup recipe out of her in the 20 years that I ate there, no matter how many hugs I gave. I'll have to try to make this and see if I can at least get close to her bowls of spicy Ambrosia.
For years I only ate wonton soup..then one day in my 40s I suddenly made a switch and tried my husband's hot and sour soup. What a revelation! I used to go by a certain Chinese restaurant just for a quart of their hot and sour soup. Sadly, for some reason several years ago they took it off the menu! So, I have tried several recipes and other restaurants but haven't found my new favorite yet. I hope this is it!
We had been going to a Seattle restaurant since the mid 1970's that served excellent Sizzling Rice Soup. The restaurant was started by a first generation (legal) immigrant family, and the restaurant had passed through a couple of family generations. I moved out of the city in the early 1990's and happily drove over an hour to get the soup. Sadly, they were recently forced to close due to street crime and the homeless invasion.
Despite of ingredients substitutions, I successfully made this delicious soup today. I followed the instructions but used rice vinegar and balsamic vinegar instead of Chinese black black vinegar. Also I used low sodium soy sauce, 2 cans of low sodium chicken broth plus 2 cups of water and 2 teaspoons of Chinese soup base paste. I added some carrots and white pepper just before adding egg. I needed to add more cornstarch to get desired thickness. By the way, my favorite is pumpkin soup made with Kabocha pumpkin and half and half.
Love Cook's Illustrated's recipe for hot and sour soup. I used to hate it as a kid but now I love it. This recipe is in regular rotation in our house. I just made it yesterday! So I was super thrilled to see Kevin and his dad Jeffrey do this recipe for Hunger Pangs 😄 Also just wanted to add I always put more black vinegar because I like mine really sour.
My top three soups are borsht, split pea with ham, and hot and sour. When I lived in Michigan, I regularly went to a Thai restaurant in Dearborn, Bangkok 96. They had the absolute best hot and sour soup.
Perfect soup, I post this on every episode that this father/son show on ATK should be on every day & the Chinese have enough recipes to do that for years, best food show on you tube
I grew up eating my Mom’s Thai-style soups, so those are my favorites, especially Thai wonton soup. For soup at a Chinese restaurant, Hot and Sour is my favorite, but it’s difficult to find one with a nice balance of heat and tang. Thank you for sharing this recipe! It looks so delicious and fairly easy to make.
Consider having "Madame Huang" as a guest. She must know every recipe for every dish in all of China. And, like you, she has a wicked sense of humor. Thank you for this recipe. I make Hot & Sour, but it is good to know the authentic ingredients.
I really love a tart, hot and sour soup. I just happened upon your video and had to watch you two. I'm going to make this recipe soon, and I'll let you know how it goes. 😋 Thanks for the video. Oh. And dad Pang, good call on no restaurant. Lol😅
Thank you very much for this authentic recipe. I also find hot sour soup to be comfort food. Here In Melbourne Australia, I rate the cafe or restaurant on the quality of this soup.
Oh my goodness, just landed on your video and channel for the first time. What made me stop was the Hot and Sour soup which is my absolute favorite at any Chinese restaurant!!! You and your dad are so cute!! And I would take the extra credit part making this with wood ear mushrooms which are my FAVORITE, just like your dad !!! Thank you for sharing this video and God bless you both.
I’m like your Dad. I love hot and sour soup! That’s my favorite soup. 😋😋😋. Thank you for your vlog. I need to look for the Chinese vinegar at the grocery store. White pepper is hard to find too! I’ll look around for the wood ear mushrooms as well.
I’ve always liked this soup and usually get it as a little side with the meal. Last night I got the large bowl as the main meal along with 2 spring rolls that came with sweet and sour sauce. When I got home I tested my blood sugar and it was only 109. Even after eating the sweet and sour sauce. I’m definitely going to learn how to make this soup at home. Great tutorial!
I've always loved Hot n Sour soup, and the place I most often bought it has changed the recipe or something. I'm not sure if they make it in house or if they get it already prepared and heat it up, but it used to be like a broth, and now it has a gelatin-like consistency and the flavor is not the same. I will definitely be trying this recipe in the hopes that I can make it at home now.
I tried this recipe and the taste was really good. I didn't have the black vinegar and substituted it with balsamic and red wine. The flavor was there but I think the black vinegar would have made the color a bit better (darker). Great recipe.
My favorite Chinese soup. I used to make a simplified version of this that only had chicken broth, corn starch, white pepper (lots for heat), vinegar, re-hydrated shitake mushrooms since I couldn't get fresh, tofu (like yours), pork, and bamboo shoots. I cut everything into matchstick size. No egg or soy sauce etc since I was a bit poor at the time and had limited space in my tiny apartment fridge. But it was close enough to what I'd had at a local restaurant to make me happy. I'm sure your soup is better. I could get about 4 meals out of it.
Whenever I would get sick, I would order this from my neighborhood Chinese restaurant. It always made me feel better! I can't wait to try making my own!
Chris Lion: I KNOW, RIGHT?! Just the best when you're head is stuffy and you're 🥶 cold. It's SO comforting. Years ago it would have been Homemade Chicken 🐔 Soup 🍲 when I was growing up...but that was before I dined at a Chinese Restaurant. Hot and Sour Soup... ain't nothing like it! I agree. I'm in Montana and it's just starting to come into autumn. In fact, I just passed my favorite Chinese food earlier and almost stopped for hot and sour soup 🍲
I like to add the cloud ear fungus/mushroom in addition to shiitakes, and usually add dried lily buds as well. Looks delicious!
Hot & Sour soup is my #1 Chinese treat.
I've rarely felt so connected to a person as when Jeffrey pulled the batteries out of that dancing lion.
That was hilarious
🤣🤣🤣
🤣😂🤪 it was so cute!
He's like ... Aggg....I still can't get him to put away his toys..
😄
I love hot and sour soup. It was my favorite when I was growing up when I was a kid going to Chinese restaurants I love it.
Thank you ❤very cute father and son 😊
I used much more Black Vinegar and White Pepper to bring it closer to the flavor from my favorite Chinese restaurant. Still, a very good recipe.
Love this can't wait to try it
Man, one third bowl of egg drop soup, two-thirds bowl of the hot and sour, add 2-3 soup wontons, and I'm in seventh heaven, cloud nine.
I love the title: Hunger Pangs.
Looks delicious guys. 👍
followed your recipe and absolutely LOVED it! XieXie!
Wonderful indeed!!
My favorite soup. Forget about wonton and egg-drop, this is the best.
I love how genuine they were as the Dad wasn't always agreeing with the son and instructing him not to stir too much XD
Dad is a sweetheart
My favorite is Chicken Won Ton but this is #2! Love your Lion and your videos.
Hello U2 . Again long time no see . We realy love your cooking , it is also fun to watch .♾️ 🥰🍀🌾🍀🍃🙏👌👍👏👏

After trying several "you tube" recipes... this is finally it! This is the delicious soup I get a Chinese restaurants! Thank you!
"Souped Up Recipes" has a very good recipe. So does Food Wishes.
I think Dad should have his own cooking show.
I will try this recipe! Thank you for sharing!

No doubt really looking tasty. ❤❤
I’d really like to learn the salt water method.

Some places will still make something even if its been removed from the menu. Ask, you might be pleasantly surprised.
…sooooo…is it your new favorite?!
Thanks for this recipe. You dad is a treasure " 寶藏 " !!
I just purchased your cook book, I don’t find Egg Drop Soup…..Help 😂
I love the book……
Sizzling Rice Soup is my all time favorite...love the flavor of toasty rice...and the sound of the sizzle when the soup hits the hot oily rice.
Interesting.
I've never heard of that.
I'll have to do a little research on it. 👍
Another great choice...!

I'd never had that until my mom's friend ordered it when we ate out. I've always ordered it ever since if it's on the menu! 😋
My favorite soup. I have tried for years to make it but with no luck. Now I have a real recipe. Thank you
