Overwatch origins and lore wise, Roadhog is currently a reluctant bodyguard to an insane - yet potentially very rich explosive obsessive in Junkrat! Currently an internationally wanted criminal, the life of Mako Rutledge wasn’t always this way. Once a rebel with a cause, following the theft and then destruction of his home, he’s now only known as the ruthless, wanted killer and international criminal - Roadhog.
What does Roadhog think of life, the universe and everything? Exactly how does he feel about Junkrat and their partnership, and what is his favourite genre of music?
I discuss all these important (and silly) questions and more!

Brother Shaw I really wish "Do you ever shut up" was a voice line. That would come in so much handy. Especially if there's a d va on your team...
I like Roadhog. I don't know what it is, I don't normally like characters like him, but Roadhog himself is somehow engaging. I like to think about how he's so big and intimidating that he probably can just lean forward in his chair to intimidate people, without saying too much at all. He's got a hidden depth and story to him and perhaps is smarter than most think (maybe even the second smartest of the tanks, falling short of Winston) and I imagine he's a sort of observant fellow. He's quiet and pays attention to others and uses psychological tricks against others by being extremely terrifying.
By the way, I have little doubt that Roadhog's a mechanic. That scrap gun is something that only he could wield due to its size, and it's rather ingenious seeing as junk is about the only ammo a Junker would have access to in the Outback. The hook and chain looks like it came right off of a pickup truck. And, of course, Roadhog has his 'Hog', that pimped out bike.
He was a war hero, saw many friends and family dying, and got PTSD for life. I'm sure he was a charismatic dude before. However, war messed up his head. He also seems to have bipolar disorder since he always says "we" instead of "I". A war hero, broken, misunderstood and forgotten by the people he saved.

If you ask me roadhog is the most ignored tank (same with junkrat) he gets no interaction by no one, And that's really sad since he's a great character in my opinion

The one button Last name He's a man with a few words. He only talks when it's necessary. Even in Junkrat's comic he didn't say anything to Junkrat. And i don't think anyone would like to have a conversation with a giant who wears an emotionless mask and an intimidating posture.
Roadhog is infamous in the community for his broken hook hitboxes and physics. He's loved (hated?) by the community greatly if that makes you feel any better.
Ingame, that's just his character. Strong and silent.

He reminds me of Teddy Roosevelt's quote "Speak softly but carry a big stick" or in this case, a hook. Either way who would've thought a guy that barely speaks could have probably one of my favorite backstories.

I think "Nice Mask" might be the only interaction line he has with someone else other than Junkrat. Lol
Interestingly, the monster in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is only ever referred to as monster by the people around him. it is referred to as "creature" in the narration because it is not really "monstrous." That's why the "they called me a monster" makes so much sense. Because of Frankenstein's repeated abuse the creature becomes a monster
Which is basically what happened to Roadhog.
Except Blizzard turned the Shelley story on its head, Dr Junkenstein didn't abuse his Monster, he clearly adores the "Frankenhog" (as I call the creature). The abuse was the king and the people of the town abusing Dr Junkenstein and calling him a freak. "Junkestein's Monster" seems to have inherited his memories and anger while still being an automonous individuum, seeing how the Monster decided he would not let himself be controlled by anyone. But the monster attacked the people Junkenstein wanted revenge on.
Thanks for making this video. Hog is my favorite hero, and i was worried that he'd not have enough interactions to hold himself a video, but I'm glad he did :D

One weird thing I noticed was that Roadhog seems to have a lot of parental or home themed lines, such as "Sit down!", "You're in my house...get out!", "Point is mine...property of Roadhog", and possibly some others. This, combined with his apparent obsession with pigs, makes me wonder if he used to be a farm owner in life.
I think it's pretty cool that Junk rat and roadhog are complete spin-offs from the regular Overwatch cast. They're a completely different story arch than the other characters. It's pretty cool :p

The "toa" as an aboriginal thing was interesting, but I don't think that was the intended reference:
In some/many of the Polynesian languages, "Toa" means "warrior". (Like this if you first heard the word from Lego.)
For context, (one of) the same cultures give names to the "mako" skins (both 'hog's real name, the name of a species of shark, and the Maori word for "shark").
This also has the connection to Maui (Gaijin Goomba covered this in one of his videos), Roadhog's Toa and Islander skins' weapons (based on both Maui's hook and traditional Leiomano weapon), etc.
Infernoraptor totally right. I had the new Zealand and Polynesian tribal stuff in my longer voice over, but then cut it. I should have left it in as it makes more sense! I havent seen gajjns vid but will go check it out!

I like to think Roadhog, contrary to initial impressions and through the little tidbits of personality we've gotten, is actually extremely intelligent and possibly more sophisticated than appearances might suggest...which could be seen as another Pig or Boar like quality since they're actually extremely smart animals and are often depicted as having a sort of hidden sophisticated side to them a lot of fiction. He's just had to sort of "become" what he is now to adapt to what his homeland became, and maybe learn to deal with whatever lingering (probably negative, largely.) feelings he had over the Liberations' failure (which, if the theory that he's got some sort of aboriginal or pacific islander ethnic background in some way is true then that last one becomes especially and maybe a little uncomfortably poignant.) In the very least, he's got this really weary, insightful side.
I don't think he's a completely "bad" guy, if even anything beyond completely neutral; he's just a victim of some really consistently shitty circumstances. It's hard to tell though. Honestly of all the characters he's (and Junkrat of course, but honestly a bit more on Roadie.) the most in need of a cinematic or more extensive comic about him because he's one of the most interestingly enigmatic characters. My friend even had a crazy theory that maybe Mako way back in his youth was at least partially a part of Overwatch, or at least the militia he was a part of co-operated with them, because while he's not quite as old as the OG Overwatch crew, he'd have still possibly been fighting age during the Omnic Crisis and it'd explain a great many things. It's just a theory but it just goes to show how there's possibly so much to this character and it'd be a shame if they didn't take even a little advantage of that.

That's like seeing someone with something in their teeth but not saying anything. It's better to let them know so they can fix it rather than just let such an embarrassing little thing like that go unchecked.
Besides, these videos are to show off voicelines that give insight into a hero's personality. Voicelines some people not be able to find or know about. You can't make a video about sharing voicelines and then just mess up in sharing the voicelines.

so, what's with the cannisters? Were does he get them and what are they?
Instead of the very popular "Vape" theory, I had heard that Roadhog was affected by the Radiation in the Outback quite horribly. Think of them as inhalers for Asthma, as that is basically what they are, but There is a chemical within them that interacts with the radiation in his body that essentially "Heals" him or rejuvenates him.

i always just assumed it was gasoline fumes. roadhog's warped psyche and physiology probably respond well to it.
the radiation of the exploding core affected his lungs so its very difficult for him to breath so the canisters are little cans filled with junker found/made medicine. or he has asthma and the mix of asthma and him being overweight clenches his lungs and takes medication to help his lungs expand and retract allowing him to breath once more. that could also be why he wheezes after he stands still after moving. *(speaking from experience)

Ah damn I was hoping from the name of the video that Roadhog would have a reference to Terry Pratchets Disco World Series! One of the stories is about the main characters saving "Hogswatch" when someone tries to kill the Hogfather.
So, essentially, they took a page out of the history books and sent the omnics to Australia like they did with criminals in the past... Interesting.
Also, I do love what Blizzard did with the maps, showing how the characters affected the world around them. I always wondered why there was a messy tunnel leading into the gold vault and a good chunk of the gold was missing, but then it was explained to me with all the gas cans and detonation switches everywhere, the spray with the heist plan on it, and the voice lines
