Naruto and Sakura feel the most unbearable in this arc due to the need for them to stay on Sasuke's side, despite the fact he is a massive moron in this arc : attack blindly all kages, throwing away all his taka members to their deaths, trying to murder Karin, trying to murder Sakura twice, trying to kill Kakashi and Naruto. He is an ennemy of the leaf and yeah he personally wants to crush his former village, but he is being again overconfident, Naruto would have taken this exhausted Sasuke in a couple of minutes without Tobi and Zetsu saving him again. He doesn't show any kind of inner conflict for fighting against his former teammates that used to be saved by him and also saved his life. Which makes him even less likeable. Yeah yeah, it shows he is in a dark path, but my god he is the king of the a**holes. He turns against everything and everyone with still the plan to attack Konoha, which shows he thinks he can take on the full village without any support. This is just beyond dumb, for a character that usually is meticulous and act with tactical analysis. For whatever reason, Suigestu and Karin are gonna still come back to be teammates with him later on. Hopefully for him he recruited idiots, with other people he would have been left with just Juugo. I don't rate him bad for being evil, except the absence of inner conflict to fight team 7, but for being stupid in his choices. Worst Sasuke alongside the final twist Sasuke. The two of them are the least likeable and it's a miracle he has not being sentence to death and to prison for life (massive thanks to Kakashi and Naruto). Kage summit Sasuke is saved by his fights that are really cool to see, against the Raikage and against Danzo, which I would put in my favorite of the series. But still he is unbearable. Fortunately he is still alive at the end cause he is probably the best character of the early Boruto ere.
For me, Early Shippuden/Hebi Sasuke was the most unique and underrated version of him, Hebi Sasuke was the perfect balance of Martial Arts like-Hand to Hand Combat (his Taijutsu was exceptional) and Swordplay CQC. A diverse range of short-medium and even some long range Fire & Lightning Powers. His Speed and his Reflex Reaction was very Insane for that specific time, The utility of the White Snake powers. Complete with a cool Vampire/Cursed like Transformation(The Cursed Seal) All along -side his 3 Tomoe Sharingan. Hebi Sasuke gave off vibes and feelings like: cool, edgy, direct, unique, intelligent, focused, determined, perceptive, no-messing, tactical, analytical, powerful. ☯️
This! I also really, really liked how he had his own moral code. After refusing to kill Naruto in the final valley, he commits himself to only killing when necessary. Which made him feel much more likable, and easy to root for. Plus, I really enjoyed his dynamic with his team. He was a surprisingly charismatic leader, which is interesting, because we never got to see much of his leadership skills in part one.

*reads title* Hebi Sasuke hands down! Sasuke was the PERFECT anti hero here. He reminded me of Sesshomaru from Inuyasha. Was unfazed and calm by everything and everyone, and had trump card after trump card. Hebi Sasuke was perfectly balanced
Yeah I think hebi sasuke looks older and is just a cooler design I think kishimoto should have used the taka design first and finish the series with the hebi design.
I really like the entire first part version of Sasuke, for all the reasons you listed plus it leading into the Sasuke that leaves the village and fighting Naruto which is an amazing battle and really good character writing on both sides. It's all great and I get why you separated them. But to me they are the same. I didn't like Sasuke in Shippuden that much, he's constantly changing sides and people around and while it makes sense it just makes him seem like a selfish backstabber who's hard to root for a lot of the time and they could have done his entrance better because he comes across as so smug and arrogant which is a complaint a lot of people have with him. Also I get that they needed to end Naruto with another Naruto vs Sasuke fight, but it's kind of tiring how he wants to take over the world after they just defeated two other people trying to do the same thing.
I think think that was the point of his character he is insecure and doesn't have clear goal or a view on anything. He spent all his life trying to kill Itachi, but after he does he is told truth about Itachi and his world view and ideals are changed. He focused on nothing else his entire life but now he realises he was living a lie.

He would have murdered Naruto at the start of shippuden if not for Orochimaru. It felt he was at his best when he had those moments of vulnerability and doubt. After part 1 it sincerely felt as if he really didn't give a shit about having friends of any kind. So I stopped too. I had no reason to root for a reunion when he accomplished so much without them.

I think kishimoto should've showed us more of what happened between him and orochimaru specifically his training. It's only after this time period that sasuke becomes a full blown introvert. Rarely speaking his mind at all, unlike when he was a genin in the leaf. My headcannon is it's because he spent most of his time with orochimaru in solitude with no one to talk to. I just think it would've been so interesting for kishimoto to dive into the mind of that version of sasuke. I really want to know what he was thinking during his time with orochimaru. For example sasuke was dead set on giving his body to orochimaru in the beginning, but we never get to see the moment he changes his mind. Or his thoughts on the leaf, or if he was thinking about it at all. I also think his training itself would've been really interesting to see, he was pretty overpowered after the time skip. Meaning he went through some pretty intense training from the moment he arrived at orochimaru's hideout. All we really got was him soloing team 7, and soloing 1000 ninja without a scratch off screen... there's so much more we could've seen like him getting his sword, learning to use it, getting better with his sharingan, learning kirin, and his new variations of chidori. People would probably appreciate his character alot more if we were given that before he just came back and clapped Naruto no diff. That's exactly why everyone hates his character so much lol.
Your analysis of hebi sasuke at the beginning is interesting. The way he acted when he was fighting team 7, I never took it as a front and him trying to act more ruthless in front of orochimaru. I never thought of it like that but it makes sense. The fact that he tried to use Kirin, I just assumed that was an overlook on kishimoto’s part. @@dantemitsoyu977 He still cared about team 7. He told naruto at the end of part one that he's valued his time with naruto and others leaf shinobi, but he has to join orochimaru to kill itachi. Orochimaru doesn't know this and just thinks sasuke is like him. So while orochimaru is secretly watching he has to keep up the act for him. And he doesn't want the leaf to get in the way of his plans for revenge so. That's why he acts like he doesn't care about them. He also shows the power gap to make them feel like chasing him is useless.
People dislike Taka Sasuke because he's going against Itachi's wishes despite doing these things for the sake of Itachi, but realistically you can love someone and do things for their sake without agreeing with their ideologies, Sasuke understood why Itachi did what he did but he still hated the village elders for causing all the issues in the first place and at that point he was becoming unhinged, this may also have been because the Magekyou was giving him a lot of extra chakra and Obito and Kisame also refer to this.
Kage summit Sasuke is, to dis day, the best character representation of the mangekyou sharingan's curse of hatred. The fact he comes immediately after hebi Sasuke fullfils his single-minded goal, which had been his goal since part 1, just makes his descent into madness that much more iconic.
How is it plot that he won when they show that he had the reverse summon ready before the fight. That shows how efficient he is at using all his tools that's at his disposal.
Hebi sasuke for me. He was calm, collected, and analytical in his fights as opposed to MS sasuke who keeps spamming amaterasu and susanoo all day and charges head on without a plan.

He goes from one of my least favorite to my favorite character when we see him finally break and cry over his brother and then decide to kill danzo for causing itachi so much pain as hiruzen was already dead.

It’s awesome to see someone finally appreciate Taka Sasuke, it’s my favorite version of the character and I really disliked how it ended. I enjoyed a lot more how Naruto UNS 3 Full Burst handled the character (gotta mention that ending line: “Even in the fog of war, this eye will keep you in my sights. I’ll teach you how weak your thinking is, how deep my hatred runs.” Is cold af) and I would have loved to see the full fight between MS Sasuke and Sage Mode Naruto seen in the intro of UNS Generations; Sasuke turning into the final villain would have been really interesting

The plot required Naruto to "save him" from darkness, so even after learning the history of shinobi and meeting the Sage of Six Paths, he would still choose to be a dictator

I’m glad I seen this vid this further proves my point that Sasuke was/is best when he’s a good guy fighting for more than just his own vengeance/curse/clan, Early Part 1 Sasuke and Boruto Era/Adult Sasuke are my favorite versions and I’d argue the best versions and when his character is at its best. My 3rd favorite version of his character and the only time I like Sasuke when he’s the villain is Taka/Kage Summit as in my mind that’s the only time where I felt like his actions are somewhat justified again somewhat like who blames him for wanting to kill Danzo and the other 2 elders they were the ones who pushed Itachi to do what he did while Hiruzen was trying to compromise with the Uchiha but then Sasuke went too far when he started trying to just kill everybody everyone at the Five Kage Summit, Leaving Jugo and Suigetsu to die, Sacrificing Karin, Killing Team 7 and everyone in the Hidden Leaf like they’re literally all innocent when it comes to what happened with his clan. However Hebi and Late Part 1 Sasuke are both at the bare minimum of ok to me like who cares and don’t get me started on War Arc that’s just trash and it makes sense too cause the War arc in general is just trash.

teenage post konoha sasuke was a straight badass, taka sasuke was skilled sure but he was emotionally out of control....lacked tact, and wisdom and was easily manipulated by obito used up his mangekyo way too fast and would have been killed had obito not been there. He was a sucide bomber.... It was using orchimaru, traning to become stronger than him, and killing him (to his knowledge) leaving and forming a team after of released prisoners that was pure boss. By far my favorite version of sasuke. He was an assassin who went his own way, a true ninja imo.
off the top of my head once every team realizes they can't get a bell individually then they'll work together. Once they work together kakashi will pass them.
To me, hebi Sasuke vs Itachi is the coolest, gen 1 Sasuke the most well written and adult Sasuke the most attaching. After the revelations about Itachi and before the redemption the character is really bad however

I can argue naruto did have drastic character changes or a lot of enteral crisis. It seems like every major village actually changed his believes more and more. Making him into the hokage he becomes. It wasn’t like he never changed ideologies I just feel it gets overshadowed by his goofy nature. But zabuza&haku, gaara, sasuke pt1, pain, obito&madara, then sasuke end of series. Shikamaru also went through changes from the super lazy kid in part one who doesn’t want to be apart of anything to someone who wanted to save the world and be naruto right hand to guide him to hokage.
His fight with B was just a bunch of asspulls because B was so much stronger than sasuke, even in a 1v3, that bee basically killed him twice. Maybe 3 times cause he would have no answer to a bijuu bomb at that point either I can understand Karin saving him, but the second time was bs. His entire chest was gone. No coming back from that.

I won't lie that what Sasuke turned into around Taka keeps things interesting at first because at first we think he's lot his mind, only to slowly realize how much as he slowly goes more insane. I still feel like his goal to destroy the hidden leaf was so stupid. Mostly because if im remembering correctly, he was told that Itachi made his own decision to do that, to save the leafs future, but he freaks out and tries to destroy the very thing his brother sacrificed everything to protect. It just seems so backwards. If he had been like "I will kill all the elders of the lead who made him choose this decision" like Danzo who was the main culprit I'd get it, but he goes off the deep end and doesnt come back. It's not like he calmed down and was like "well its not like the current village as a whole is at fault". Sure it made for an interesting story but the leap in logic just made him seem so stupid, not even broken, just stupid. If you really respected your brother, would you destroy what he sacrificed his and many others lives to protect?
Yeah but you have to understand that sasuke had no idea how itachi really felt when obito told him the truth. It's more likely that itachi was forced to slaughter his family, rather than he chose to. He even screamed at danzo that he made itachi do it when danzo tried to explain to him the kind of man itachi was. Once itachi confirms everything sasuke finally comes to a new conclusion. The writing all beautifully comes together.

It's not right, but it still makes perfect sense given the circumstances. Any Uchiha who survived the massacre would have similar feelings towards the leaf. Especially if it was their brother who was used to do it. On top of all the manipulation throughout his life.

Until Gold Roger stumbles upon it some time before the events of the manga and, years later, the Akatsuki reactivate its magnetic field, causing the Straw Hats (post Alabasta) and a bunch of pirates to stumble upon it. With the Akatsuki escaping the continent looking for "something" (money? revenge? power? safety?), Naruto and Sasuke join the Straw Hats in pursue. Every character is written masterfully, the jokes are on point, and the author managed to combine the (known at the time) lore of both series in a really interesting way.
Hey Horizon, can you explain why the Akatsuki had to wait 3 years to start collecting tailed beast. In part 1 they could have captured Naruto, but then claim that they must wait 3 years which takes place in Shippuden.
Remember how the akatsuki would take on mercenary missions to try to collect money? Then they would use that money to hire mercenaries once Nagato would destroy the world. Not sure if that was the exact plan, but they didn't start collecting beasts until they had amassed almost enough money. They were trying to coordinate so that they collect just enough money by the time they seal every tailed beast. The reason why they tried to capture naruto in part one was that the village was vulnerable. Right after orochimaru attacked their manpower was down and Hiruzen was a major loss by himself. Also Naruto was young and easier to capture at that time. But the 9 tails must be sealed last because his chakra level was so much more than any other tailed beast. For some reason if they didn't seal it last the gedo statue would break from chakra overload. I assume they wanted just imprison naruto until every other tailed beast was captured.

Here is my take on why people may not like Sasuke. When it comes to characters that you're following the journey of you need a reason as to why you should follow them. As such one great way to do that is to make the character someone the audience cares about. Personally I don't think Kishimoto did a great job with making us like Sasuke aside from the superficial aspects like his cool design, powers and his social status. For some that is more than enough to him to be the fan favourite for many people since they use him for fantasy projection. They see this kid who is cool looking, popular with the girls, the best ninja in the class and everyone keeps talking about him unlike Naruto. Even other ninja that were more capable than Sasuke at the time like Gaara, Lee or Neji they didn't get hyped up by others on a constant basis or have a hoard of fangirls, also Sasuke surpasses them later anyways. So for that reason alone, people rep Sasuke even if that he's not that likeable at all. As for others who claim his tortured past and his cold attitude due to his grief and pain is so interesting, that is due to the circumstances around his character rather than the character himself. When we first meet Sasuke we see a boring moody kid who's only purpose at the time was to give naruto a goal to get stronger. He does show small moments of caring but afterwards he doesn't change and acts like a moody brat afterwards, this remains the same until Itachi pushes him to seek more power. So at that moment what reason did we have to care about Sasuke genuinely? Even in the flashbacks where he was happy and stuff, we only see him interact with his family and as such we don't know how his interaction with his konoha peers would differ. As for me I really don't care for Sasuke cuz in the real time of the show he's just a bore who is only interesting when he's butting heads with Naruto. Even when things around him change like him learing the truth and such he still has the same boring personality and to me that is the key to make me care. Naruto for example is a great example. He has a bunch of crazy stuff surrounding character but his personality isn't lacking but for sasuke we'rr supposed to care about him but we've never had a good enough reason to. So yeah that is my main problem with Sasuke, he is someone we should root for but he's written in a way where we want to root against him.

This! I also really, really liked how he had his own moral code. After refusing to kill Naruto in the final valley, he commits himself to only killing when necessary. Which made him feel much more likable, and easy to root for. Plus, I really enjoyed his dynamic with his team. He was a surprisingly charismatic leader, which is interesting, because we never got to see much of his leadership skills in part one.
The original Sasuke who just was tryna be the very best....... Like no one ever was.

I really like the entire first part version of Sasuke, for all the reasons you listed plus it leading into the Sasuke that leaves the village and fighting Naruto which is an amazing battle and really good character writing on both sides. It's all great and I get why you separated them. But to me they are the same. I didn't like Sasuke in Shippuden that much, he's constantly changing sides and people around and while it makes sense it just makes him seem like a selfish backstabber who's hard to root for a lot of the time and they could have done his entrance better because he comes across as so smug and arrogant which is a complaint a lot of people have with him. Also I get that they needed to end Naruto with another Naruto vs Sasuke fight, but it's kind of tiring how he wants to take over the world after they just defeated two other people trying to do the same thing.

I think think that was the point of his character he is insecure and doesn't have clear goal or a view on anything. He spent all his life trying to kill Itachi, but after he does he is told truth about Itachi and his world view and ideals are changed. He focused on nothing else his entire life but now he realises he was living a lie.

It felt he was at his best when he had those moments of vulnerability and doubt. After part 1 it sincerely felt as if he really didn't give a shit about having friends of any kind. So I stopped too. I had no reason to root for a reunion when he accomplished so much without them.

I think kishimoto should've showed us more of what happened between him and orochimaru specifically his training. It's only after this time period that sasuke becomes a full blown introvert. Rarely speaking his mind at all, unlike when he was a genin in the leaf. My headcannon is it's because he spent most of his time with orochimaru in solitude with no one to talk to. I just think it would've been so interesting for kishimoto to dive into the mind of that version of sasuke. I really want to know what he was thinking during his time with orochimaru. For example sasuke was dead set on giving his body to orochimaru in the beginning, but we never get to see the moment he changes his mind. Or his thoughts on the leaf, or if he was thinking about it at all. I also think his training itself would've been really interesting to see, he was pretty overpowered after the time skip. Meaning he went through some pretty intense training from the moment he arrived at orochimaru's hideout. All we really got was him soloing team 7, and soloing 1000 ninja without a scratch off screen... there's so much more we could've seen like him getting his sword, learning to use it, getting better with his sharingan, learning kirin, and his new variations of chidori. People would probably appreciate his character alot more if we were given that before he just came back and clapped Naruto no diff. That's exactly why everyone hates his character so much lol.

Your analysis of hebi sasuke at the beginning is interesting. The way he acted when he was fighting team 7, I never took it as a front and him trying to act more ruthless in front of orochimaru. I never thought of it like that but it makes sense. The fact that he tried to use Kirin, I just assumed that was an overlook on kishimoto’s part. I’m assuming that’s headcannon on your end but that’s pretty damn convincing. So thanks for offering that perspective. What made you come to that conclusion? @@dantemitsoyu977 He still cared about team 7. He told naruto at the end of part one that he's valued his time with naruto and others leaf shinobi, but he has to join orochimaru to kill itachi. Orochimaru doesn't know this and just thinks sasuke is like him.
So while orochimaru is secretly watching he has to keep up the act for him. And he doesn't want the leaf to get in the way of his plans for revenge so. That's why he acts like he doesn't care about them. He also shows the power gap to make them feel like chasing him is useless.

People dislike Taka Sasuke because he's going against Itachi's wishes despite doing these things for the sake of Itachi, but realistically you can love someone and do things for their sake without agreeing with their ideologies, Sasuke understood why Itachi did what he did but he still hated the village elders for causing all the issues in the first place and at that point he was becoming unhinged, this may also have been because the Magekyou was giving him a lot of extra chakra and Obito and Kisame also refer to this.

Kage summit Sasuke is, to dis day, the best character representation of the mangekyou sharingan's curse of hatred. The fact he comes immediately after hebi Sasuke fullfils his single-minded goal, which had been his goal since part 1, just makes his descent into madness that much more iconic.

It’s awesome to see someone finally appreciate Taka Sasuke, it’s my favorite version of the character and I really disliked how it ended. I enjoyed a lot more how Naruto UNS 3 Full Burst handled the character (gotta mention that ending line: “Even in the fog of war, this eye will keep you in my sights. I’ll teach you how weak your thinking is, how deep my hatred runs.” Is cold af) and I would have loved to see the full fight between MS Sasuke and Sage Mode Naruto seen in the intro of UNS Generations; Sasuke turning into the final villain would have been really interesting

I wasn't planning on putting his appearances in order, but I like most versions of Sasuke. However, Taka Sasuke is completely unhinged and his actions stopped making sense to me. He starts killing people for no reason, even Suigetsu calls him out. First he's like, "I'll kill the Konoha elders" then he's like "Everyone in Konoha must die." Then he betrays his comrades even though he saved them one arc ago. And War Sasuke's motivations at the end seemed like a cheap excuse for conflict

Narratively, I agree but there is no transition between rational Sasuke and psycho Sasuke. The plot required Naruto to "save him" from darkness, so even after learning the history of shinobi and meeting the Sage of Six Paths, he would still choose to be a dictator

I’m glad I seen this vid this further proves my point that Sasuke was/is best when he’s a good guy fighting for more than just his own vengeance/curse/clan, Early Part 1 Sasuke and Boruto Era/Adult Sasuke are my favorite versions and I’d argue the best versions and when his character is at its best. My 3rd favorite version of his character and the only time I like Sasuke when he’s the villain is Taka/Kage Summit as in my mind that’s the only time where I felt like his actions are somewhat justified again somewhat like who blames him for wanting to kill Danzo and the other 2 elders they were the ones who pushed Itachi to do what he did while Hiruzen was trying to compromise with the Uchiha but then Sasuke went too far when he started trying to just kill everybody everyone at the Five Kage Summit, Leaving Jugo and Suigetsu to die, Sacrificing Karin, Killing Team 7 and everyone in the Hidden Leaf like they’re literally all innocent when it comes to what happened with his clan. However Hebi and Late Part 1 Sasuke are both at the bare minimum of ok to me like who cares and don’t get me started on War Arc that’s just trash and it makes sense too cause the War arc in general is just trash.

teenage post konoha sasuke was a straight badass, taka sasuke was skilled sure but he was emotionally out of control....lacked tact, and wisdom and was easily manipulated by obito used up his mangekyo way too fast and would have been killed had obito not been there. He was a sucide bomber.... It was using orchimaru, traning to become stronger than him, and killing him (to his knowledge) leaving and forming a team after of released prisoners that was pure boss. By far my favorite version of sasuke. He was an assassin who went his own way, a true ninja imo.

I can argue naruto did have drastic character changes or a lot of enteral crisis. It seems like every major village actually changed his believes more and more. Making him into the hokage he becomes. It wasn’t like he never changed ideologies I just feel it gets overshadowed by his goofy nature. But zabuza&haku, gaara, sasuke pt1, pain, obito&madara, then sasuke end of series. Shikamaru also went through changes from the super lazy kid in part one who doesn’t want to be apart of anything to someone who wanted to save the world and be naruto right hand to guide him to hokage.

I won't lie that what Sasuke turned into around Taka keeps things interesting at first because at first we think he's lot his mind, only to slowly realize how much as he slowly goes more insane. I still feel like his goal to destroy the hidden leaf was so stupid. Mostly because if im remembering correctly, he was told that Itachi made his own decision to do that, to save the leafs future, but he freaks out and tries to destroy the very thing his brother sacrificed everything to protect. It just seems so backwards. If he had been like "I will kill all the elders of the lead who made him choose this decision" like Danzo who was the main culprit I'd get it, but he goes off the deep end and doesnt come back. It's not like he calmed down and was like "well its not like the current village as a whole is at fault". Sure it made for an interesting story but the leap in logic just made him seem so stupid, not even broken, just stupid. If you really respected your brother, would you destroy what he sacrificed his and many others lives to protect?
Yeah but you have to understand that sasuke had no idea how itachi really felt when obito told him the truth. It's more likely that itachi was forced to slaughter his family, rather than he chose to. He even screamed at danzo that he made itachi do it when danzo tried to explain to him the kind of man itachi was. Once itachi confirms everything sasuke finally comes to a new conclusion. The writing all beautifully comes together.

There are a bunch of people who had nothing to do with his brother, why not just kill The Elders that he believe forced him, or at least put him in that position. Because HIS brother had to live a life of suffering. So in the moment of his insanity, he makes the mistake of directing his hate at everyone in the village. It's not right, but it still makes perfect sense given the circumstances. Any Uchiha who survived the massacre would have similar feelings towards the leaf. Especially if it was their brother who was used to do it. On top of all the manipulation throughout his life.

Until Gold Roger stumbles upon it some time before the events of the manga and, years later, the Akatsuki reactivate its magnetic field, causing the Straw Hats (post Alabasta) and a bunch of pirates to stumble upon it.
With the Akatsuki escaping the continent looking for "something" (money? revenge? power? safety?), Naruto and Sasuke join the Straw Hats in pursue.
Every character is written masterfully, the jokes are on point, and the author managed to combine the (known at the time) lore of both series in a really interesting way.

Hey Horizon, can you explain why the Akatsuki had to wait 3 years to start collecting tailed beast. In part 1 they could have captured Naruto, but then claim that they must wait 3 years which takes place in Shippuden.
Remember how the akatsuki would take on mercenary missions to try to collect money? Then they would use that money to hire mercenaries once Nagato would destroy the world.
Not sure if that was the exact plan, but they didn't start collecting beasts until they had amassed almost enough money. They were trying to coordinate so that they collect just enough money by the time they seal every tailed beast.
The reason why they tried to capture naruto in part one was that the village was vulnerable. Right after orochimaru attacked their manpower was down and Hiruzen was a major loss by himself. Also Naruto was young and easier to capture at that time.
But the 9 tails must be sealed last because his chakra level was so much more than any other tailed beast. For some reason if they didn't seal it last the gedo statue would break from chakra overload.
I assume they wanted just imprison naruto until every other tailed beast was captured.

Here is my take on why people may not like Sasuke.
When it comes to characters that you're following the journey of you need a reason as to why you should follow them.
As such one great way to do that is to make the character someone the audience cares about.
Personally I don't think Kishimoto did a great job with making us like Sasuke aside from the superficial aspects like his cool design, powers and his social status.
For some that is more than enough to him to be the fan favourite for many people since they use him for fantasy projection.
They see this kid who is cool looking, popular with the girls, the best ninja in the class and everyone keeps talking about him unlike Naruto.
Even other ninja that were more capable than Sasuke at the time like Gaara, Lee or Neji they didn't get hyped up by others on a constant basis or have a hoard of fangirls, also Sasuke surpasses them later anyways.
So for that reason alone, people rep Sasuke even if that he's not that likeable at all.
As for others who claim his tortured past and his cold attitude due to his grief and pain is so interesting, that is due to the circumstances around his character rather than the character himself.
When we first meet Sasuke we see a boring moody kid who's only purpose at the time was to give naruto a goal to get stronger.
He does show small moments of caring but afterwards he doesn't change and acts like a moody brat afterwards, this remains the same until Itachi pushes him to seek more power.
So at that moment what reason did we have to care about Sasuke genuinely?
Even in the flashbacks where he was happy and stuff, we only see him interact with his family and as such we don't know how his interaction with his konoha peers would differ.
As for me I really don't care for Sasuke cuz in the real time of the show he's just a bore who is only interesting when he's butting heads with Naruto.
Even when things around him change like him learing the truth and such he still has the same boring personality and to me that is the key to make me care.
Naruto for example is a great example.
He has a bunch of crazy stuff surrounding character but his personality isn't lacking but for sasuke we'rr supposed to care about him but we've never had a good enough reason to.
So yeah that is my main problem with Sasuke, he is someone we should root for but he's written in a way where we want to root against him.
Yup Kishimoto didn't show pre massacre Sasuke's life in the story and what he does post-massacre as well. I guess you might be right when you said that he is written in a way where we want to root against him lol.
