  • This video demonstrates how to use a Miswak stick. Ahmed from Alhannah.com first shows viewers how to prepare a new miswak for use. He goes on to explain how a freshly peeled miswak is softened by soaking in either water, or with Rose water which is traditionally used to give the mouth a pleasant fragrance. After preparing his miswak for use, he then demonstrates how to use the stick to clean the mouth without toothpaste.

    Hold miswak from the top as much as possible so you have more control. Miswak should be around the thickness of your pinky finger and always start from right to left. Do this for bottom teeth and then followed by right to left for the top teeth. After use, rinse it and always let it air dry, DO NOT keep it in a wet or sealed package as mould will grow. After few days, cut the miswaak and repeat until it is the length of your pinky finger. It is not recommended to use too thick or too short miswaks.

      @@elkaberpa Praise be to Allah.
      It is part of Allaah’s complete blessing upon us and the perfection of this great religion, that Islam organizes all aspects of our lives. There is nothing good but it has shown it to us, and there is nothing bad but it has warned us against it. As well as beliefs, acts of worship, interactions with others and morals and manners, that also includes our private affairs in which Islam shows us the way that is befitting to man’s noble status and the way in which Allaah has honoured him. That includes the way the Muslim eats and drinks, and so on.
      This is an established principle in sharee’ah: that which has to do with honour and nobility, such as putting on one's garment and pants and shoes, entering the mosque, using the siwaak, putting on kohl, clipping the nails, trimming the moustache, combing the hair, plucking the armpit hair, shaving the head, saying salaam at the end of prayer, washing the limbs when purifying oneself, exiting the toilet, eating and drinking, shaking hands, touching the Black Stone, etc are all things which it is mustahabb to start on the right or use the right hand. As for things which are the opposite, such as entering the toilet, exiting the mosque, blowing one’s nose, cleaning oneself after using the toilet, taking off one’s garment, pants and shoes, and so on, it is mustahabb to start on the left or use the left hand. All of that is because the right hand is more noble and honoured. This was stated by al-Nawawi in Sharh Saheeh Muslim. There is a great deal of evidence to support this principle, such as the following:
      In al-Saheehayn it is narrated that ‘Umar ibn Salamah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O young boy, say the name of Allaah and eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5376) and Muslim (2022).
      In Sunan Abi Dawood (33) it is narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: The right hand of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was for his purification and food, and his left hand was for using the toilet and anything that was dirty. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.
      Muslim (262) narrated that Salmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: He (meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)) forbade any one of us to clean himself with his right hand.
      And Muslim (2020) narrated from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No one among you should eat with his left hand or drink with it, for the shaytaan eats with his left hand and drinks with it.”
      Allaah has warned us against disobeying the commands of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
      “And let those who oppose the Messenger’s (Muhammad’s) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah __ legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them”
      [al-Noor 24:63]
      This applies if one is able to eat with the right hand. But if one is unable to do so, there is no sin in that. Al-Nawawi said in Sharh Muslim (13/191): The objection to eating and drinking with the left hand applies so long as there is no excuse. If there is an excuse which prevents one from eating and drinking with the right hand because of sickness, injury etc, then it is not makrooh. End quote.
      Al-Ghazaali said in al-Ihya’ (4/93): Then the One Who gave you two hands to do things with, some of which are noble, such as picking up the Mus-haf, and some are ignoble, such as removing impurities. So if you pick up the Mus-haf with your left hand, and you remove impurities with your right hand, then you have used that which is noble to do something ignoble, and you have neglected its rights and wronged it, and turned away from what is proper. End quote.
      To sum up what the scholars have said about the reasons why the right hand is preferred for things that are noble:
      1-That is differing from the shaytaan, as in the case of eating and drinking.
      2-It is honouring the right hand over the left.
      3-It is using proper etiquette with people, so that one does not shake hands with them, take things from them or give things to them with the hand with which one removes impurities.
      4-It is a sign of hope that Allaah will make us among those who are on the right hand (ahl al-yameen).
      And Allaah knows best.

      @@manuelAAU620 The miswak can be reused, wash everytime after use. Lets say after 4-5 days of use, cut the brush altogether which you made earlier and the repeat the process of pealing the skin 1 inch, soaking in water for 15 mins to an hour, chew it to make it like a brush and wash after each use. Keep repeating the process until the stick becomes too small to use or you lost it😂... I also do not recomment to keep it in toilet with other brushes.. May be keep it in your room or you can also carry it all the time to use it whenever needed. Hope this helps

    Although I'm not muslim and I don't follow islamic rules but I'm still watching this video because miswak is a damn good toothbrush. Like it cleans your teeth better than most of today's toothbrushes, it doesn't harm the body in any way like the floride toothpastes, freshens the breath and still eco friendly! I'm planning to switch to miswak and also grow a tree of it. Also, the guy in the tutorial is pretty cute 😊😊.

      You should look into Islam. If the man who advocated for the miswak the best (the prophet ﷺ) is telling you Islam is the truth then you owe it to yourself to look into Islam. Also think about how something natural from trees works so well for our teeth. The creation has a creator behind it and he created everything with a purpose.

    brother so do I keep the miswak in a small cup of water regularly until I use it again?

    • @AlhannahIslamicClothing
      @AlhannahIslamicClothing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +123

      As-salaamu Alaykum brother, It is only necessary to soak your miswak in a cup of water after you first peel it, in order to soften the end so bristles can form. Once the bristles are formed at the end of your miswak it is not necessary to soak it in between use. Be sure to rinse it off, however, after each use. Then store the clean miswak upright (like a toothbrush) in a clean, dry place. The next time you use it, rinse the bristles off and it will be ready to use. Once the bristles start to wear down, you can trim off the end and prepare your miswak again by peeling and soaking it and then chewing on the end to from new bristles. After trimming the miswak a few time and it becomes too short it will be time to replace it with a new stick. Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching and Jazak Allah Khair!

However, if you have any dental work which may become damaged, such as a crown or bridge, we suggest consulting your dentist first. There are no chemicals in the miswak--plain or flavored-- that should damage teeth. Thanks for watching!

    • @AlhannahIslamicClothing
      @AlhannahIslamicClothing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Salaam, Thanks for asking - this is a good question. However, I do not recommend this approach. Using a Miswak and a toothbrush does not have to be mutually exclusive-it does not have to be one or the other. In order to fight tooth decay and prevent tartar build up on our teeth, we brush with a toothbrush, we use toothpaste, we use dental floss to clean between our teeth and rinse with mouthwash all in an effort to keep mouths clean, fresh and healthy. I suggest we think of the miswak as another weapon in our “war” against tooth decay and gum disease. When added to an existing dental regimen, the miswak will improve our efforts to keep cavities and gum disease at bay. I think of the miswak as another tool in my arsenal used to fight tooth decay. Therefore, I use both a miswak and toothbrush daily. Generally, I brush my teeth in the morning and at bedtime. However, I carry a miswak with me and use it throughout the day-especially after eating and after wudu. (It is especially convenient and can be used anywhere, anytime.) As a result, I have noticed a marked reduction of cavities and tartar buildup on my teeth.

    brush teeth from up and down or left to right or circular motion ?
    after it's dry , can i store it in a plastic box container with lid ?

      Salaam, I find soaking a new miswak in water for 15 minutes is sufficient to soften the end enough to form bristles. If you prefer, it can be soaked in water for up to 2 hours to make it a bit softer when you chew on it. However, I would not recommend leaving it in water any longer than is necessary, and in my opinion soaking it for 24 hours is far too long. (There is no right or wrong answer other than what works best for you.) After soaking it, chew on the end a couple of times and then spread the end apart by pushing on the top of the miswak with your thumb. When you push it apart, brush like bristles will form.
      When you brush your teeth with the miswak use an up and down motion to clean the plaque from your teeth in front and in back. You can also make sideways motions however do not put excessive pressure on your teeth and gums. Use similar pressure that you would use with a toothbrush.
      Before you use your miswak rinse it under water and again when you are done. The miswak can be left out to air dry between use, just like a toothbrush. If you prefer, you can store it in a clean container or in a plastic baggie to take along with you.
      If there is anything else you would like clarified, please ask. Thanks for watching!

    Is it normal that it smells really bad and burned?

    • @AlhannahIslamicClothing
      @AlhannahIslamicClothing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Salam, A fresh miswak does have a very distinct scent. I would describe the scent almost like a cross between an earthy scent and licorice. Although some people are not particularly fond of the initial scent, a new miswak should never smelled burned or have a chemical taste or taste rancid. When you initially peel the miswak you should not leave it soaking in water too long. Some people suggest leaving it overnight, but I really think that is too long. I find 10-15 minutes or 1/2 hour at the very most is sufficient to soften the miswak enough to form bristles. (If you soak it too long, for example overnight, it may acquire an unpleasant odor from sitting in the water.) (You might also try soaking the Miswak in Rosewater or Peppermint essential oil to give it a pleasant scent.) After soaking the miswak you should chew on the end to soften and separate the bristles. Chewing on the Miswak to separate the bristles is the only time I have ever tasted an unpleasant bitter flavor. Also, I find that if any of the outer peel is left on the miswak stick, the bitterness will tend to be stronger. After chewing on your miswak for the first time, you should rinse your mouth to remove the bitterness and also rinse the new miswak. Also, remember to rinse the miswak after each use. After using my miswak one or two times, I find that strong scent diminishes and it just has a light odor similar to licorice or fennel seed. Personally, I like to use the "Al-Falah" brand miswak I used in the video because they are fresh, soft and the do not smell bad. I hope this helped and if you have any further questions feel free to ask. Thanks for watching! Jazak Allah Khair.

      Salam, The miswak are intended for multiple use. You can continue using your miswak until it is too short to use comfortably. After using it rinse it well (as you would a toothbrush) and stand up to dry. When the bristles become broken, then trim your miswak the same way as when it was new. It can be trimmed until it is too short to use. Miswak can last anywhere from a week to a month or more depending upon how often you trim it. Shukran--Thanks for watching!
