It's the Room Where I Film My Videos! Studio Tour

  • Let’s take a tour of the studio where I make my videos! When does a bedroom become a studio? I guess just when you start calling it a studio? I’m very grateful to have a space where I can be creative and make videos. It’s literally a dream come true and 12 year old me would be super excited.
    Thanks @HeatherJustCreate for helping me to film this video! It would have been very boring without you.

With that aside....this channel is quickly becoming my 'go to' as I navigate my way through trying to figure out the whole go live, and podcast 'thang' to launch my channel in a fun, new direction. What?! Tom's a teacher!? Nice.
    Left San Diego in 1994 as a teacher to begin my overseas life of education. Now in Dubai and still working. Been watching your videos on the Rodecaster Pro, PodMics and assorted equipment. Hello there my friend >;-) You make great videos. I have been learning a lot from you about podcasting and filming.
    I would like to pass on a tip if you don't mind. I have been a drummer for 32 years now.
    Turn that drumset around. Work with the kit and the cymbal stands to set it up so you can play be comfortable and save space. Also filling the bass drum up with a few pillows gets you brownie points with the Mrs. >;-)
    Great drumming and a cool kit man.
    Thanks again and good luck with everything.

      @@tombuck Yes, so very true! When I used to do wedding photography for 25 years in the past, my whole place was devoted to camera and lighting gear up the ying-yang! Plus I had tons of large framed prints hanging on the walls everywhere to show prospective bridal clients. My G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) infliction was in over drive back then! Even nowadays I have to try to curb my desire to constantly upgrade, haha! By the way, thanks to you, I just ordered my Rodecaster Pro from Sweetwater today! Question please: Do you think I should keep or refund my Motu M4 4x4 audio interface? Is an audio interface connected to a computer reeeeally necessary for podcasting? That Motu unit is extremely difficult to get and is back ordered everywhere. I can't decide to keep it or not, what's your opinion on that? Also, do you have that optional $20 Rode USB charging cable to power the Rodecaster from an external battery pack? That item is not in stock anywhere that I can find.

    Hi Tom,
    Enjoying your videos. Hadn’t focused on my TH-cam channel before, but am working towards it now. I am a magician and actors so it’s working out what it should be moving forward.

      The Enthusiasm Project I was worried that it may be too broad. But I’m going to try and tie it in with a podcast.

    Nice informative video. Nice setup too. Can you specify which work benches from Home Depot these are? Are they the Gladiator adjustables (birch tops) or the Husky ones or some other? How deep are they?

    • @tombuck

      These are the exact ones I have: www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-6-ft-Adjustable-Height-Solid-Wood-Top-Workbench-G7200S-US/206288247
      They’re terrific.

    What a great creative space, so well thought out. I'm currently figuring out how I can set my space up to do more voiceover work. Got the good mics but the room is large and echoey.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Echoes are tricky- I’m fighting that same battle at the moment. For voiceover, I’ve had good luck with isolation shields in the past.

    @Tom Buck I got the Husky Work Bench (great suggestion BTW). Anyway, you stated you left off the middle bar. I'm I correct in thinking that's the bar with the Husky Logo on it?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I still have one of the top crossbars on my desk, but my wife has all of them off on hers (so it’s just the legs). As long as you’re not putting 1,000lbs in it, it should be fine 👍

      Thanks Tom. Your videos have helped me in my Podcasting startup more than you know. From camera information, mic stands, lighting ideas as so on. I appreciate you.

    Love your videos! Question, are your husky desks adjustable height and are they 6' long? I'm here because I have a room size similar to yours and I'm trying to get all my stuff setup in a more efficient layout.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine are the 6' non-adjustable ones, but I've seen they now have ones with height adjustment and/or casters, which is pretty awesome.

      @@tombuck right on, thanks for your response. One more question I didn't see the answer to in your channel. Do you have a particular USB or Thunderbolt hub you recommend? The m1 Mac Mini is seriously lacking in the port department for those of us using a lot of peripherals.

    Hey....really love your color grading and audio quality. Can you give some tips for getting such full sounding audio? I'm using the VideoMic NTG with a Canon 800D. The preamps are at the lowest possible setting as well. But somehow I can't capture good audio and the noise floor is quite obvious. So do you use Channel EQ plugin followed by a Compressor? Hope you have a video on this! I'm trying to get my voice to sound fuller but it always screws something else in the end.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words! The audio in this video is a little different because I was using the Rode Wireless Go, so the lav mic was right near my mouth the whole time. Usually I use the VideoMic Pro + with the +10db setting turned on and then keep the cameras gain turned down two notches from the bottom, while trying to keep the mic itself as close to me as possible without being in the frame. I believe the NTG is a better mic than mine, so you should be able to get some great results.
      I don't really do any adjustments in editing. I'll usually boost the level a little bit in Final Cut, and every once in a while I'll add a bit of bass with the EQ since I have a more nasally voice.

    • @PropertyVibes
      @PropertyVibes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Enthusiasm Project thanks for the reply! Will tinker with the gain settings on the NTG and do some testing again. Need to find out where that noisy floor is coming from. Somewhat glad that you didn’t do much editing on Final Cut but also dismayed that something is wrong and it’s frustrating that I can’t resolve it. But that said, I used Rode Wireless Go too and that didn’t give me much noise but somehow not the fuller sound I would have liked. That’s why I went for the VideoMic NTG. Anyway suspect that the higher noise floor might be coming from my AC but have to go back and have a listen again. Please keep up the great work and looking forward to more videos from you! (Maybe I have to carpet my floor like yours to get more dampening...)

    • @PropertyVibes
      @PropertyVibes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Enthusiasm Project Oh yes...one more thing. Do you try to get your audio levels to -12db to -6db usually? That is, getting past -12db and into the yellow range but not close to 0db?
