Oh my god I have so much to say. I literally sang this song because I was obsessed with the background story of it and fell into a deep rabbit hole of old japanese mystery novels. So if you’re as interested in this PV as much as me, don’t worry, I got you!!
So this PV is based upon a short story titled “Nandemo nai/Of no concern”, one of the three stories included in “Shoujo Jigoku/Girl’s Hell” by the author Yumeno Kyuusaku in the 1930s. The story begins with the su*cide note from a young nurse named Himekusa Yuriko who is beautiful and beloved by all until her lies catch up to her as she is found to have fabricacted her past. Police get involved, there’s accusations of communism and seduction, but they ultimately let her go as they conclude that Yuriko…just loved lying. She loved creating stories and felt it made life less boring. And because of her compulsion, it leaves the reader with a mystery. Was her note a lie as well?
Sadly, this story was never officially translated into English but parts of it exist online, including someone’s doctorate thesis which examines all of Yumeno’s stories in depth.
