The darkest days of winter

  • The darkest days of winter can get pretty dark in Northern Germany. For me, the darkest days are the hardest. Without regular doses of real sunshine, I struggle. Where we live, the shortest days of the year have fewer than 7.5 hours of daylight. I keep busy with projects but winter means hibernation.

    I feel so ungrateful for the uncomfortably, hot sunny weather we’ve been getting. Thank you for reminding me to be grateful, to give thanks for life and to count my blessings. You are a very inspiring lady. Namaste 🙏🏼

      It can be easy go get used to the good things we have. We often don't notice until they are no longer there. I try to pause and actually be present, to notice the little things, too. In theory, that sounds easy. In practice, well, it is a practice. Namaste 🙂

      I seriously wish you could send me a little bit of sunshine. You know, like that snowman in Frozen who has his own little snow cloud? I want that with sun. :)

    So glad I'm not the only winter hater out there! *Lol * We just had a foot of new snow dumped on us and I'm longing for spring as well! Hang in there - we'll make it through to warmer days to come!!👍

      Oh, I absolutely detest winter. I hate the cold. I hate the dark. I hate the gray. You can get me to enjoy a few days of sunny snow, and I'll even find good fun in one snow storm. Beyond that, I'm just holding on for dear sanity. We'll make it :)

    It is dark her in Illinois too. I have a couple of Ott lights which are more like natural light and I can get reading and sewing done. I have never had my knives sharpened and I've used the same ones for 40 or 50 years. I have always had a sharpening stone and just run the knife over it a few times every time I use it and they stay sharp.

      I have a daylight lamp on my desk. It helps a tiny bit but it definitely isn't the same as the sun.
      I had a sharpening stone but as my knives are mostly Japanese damast steel knives, they have to be sharpened wet, and I have not been able to make that work after multiple years of trying.

      I am sure glad someone is enjoying my current outside world. I am thoroughly sick of winter and would very much like to skip at least to the end of February.

      Honestly, I had shown less because some people were sending me really disgusting comments and messages. My videos were getting spread onto weird fetish playlists, and I was having a hard time reaching other people. But now that there are more people here, I can include them again 🙂

    Another enjoyable video. So glad your processor is fixed and you’ll have sharp knives soon. I love that your try to waste nothing. I bought a whole chicken and got four meals out of it plus bone broth. And I’m so excited to share with you that I learned to make bone meal for my plants AND it’s not hard at all. Have you ever made bone broth or meal? I’m off to work in the garden as we have some sunshine and warmer temperatures plus the rain and snow have stopped. The sun has felt amazing. The cold and snow will be back soon here in the mountain state. Thanks for sharing your days as you brighten mine with your calm voice and great attitude 😊

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, that is indeed exciting, Julie. I've made bone broth (the soup I eat in this video has a roasted chicken bone broth as a base) before but not bone meal. I hate throwing away the bones (especially as Pepper could have enjoyed them if I hadn't cooked them to get my broth), so I would love to hear more about how you make and use the bone meal. That sounds exciting!
      Enjoy the break in the snowy cold while it lasts. I hope you get some work done in the garden. I still haven't been able to continue working there, as the snow and freezing cold are keeping me indoors.
      Thank you so much!

      @@RootsandCalluses I’m just learning so I can only share what I’ve read and watched on a few videos. You will make bone broth with the bones. That removes any meat and fat. Then you bake or heat (one person said they used their gas grill) until dry. The times and temperatures varied so I just put mine in while I was baking some bread. I let them cool and blended them in my vita mix. So folks crashed them with bats, rolling pins.. they used what they had 😀. I have not tried it on my plants. Still researching - some said one teaspoon for cup of water while others said much more water. Oh and some fed the meal to their dogs. Hope this helped. Have an amazing day! Hopefully you’ll have some sunshine

      We don't really eat a lot of sweets, so while I definitely plan to bake with some of the oats (thanks to everyone who suggested that!), that will only lower the supply a bit.

    What are the temperatures like when you're able to go barefoot? I would love to go barefoot, but here in Minnesota, USA it's too cold. Currently temps here are in the single digits with wind chill in the negatives. And I'm totally with you on being sick of the short days with no sun.

    • @RootsandCalluses

      Comfortably without thinking about it? About 10 degrees C. For a few minutes, the lowest has been -12 C. But it really depends on how much snow there is and if my feet get wet.

  • @buddieanon6533
    @buddieanon6533 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Oh Kate, it looks so very cold there! So it is here, but only with a sprinkling of snow right now. Like your lawn, mine is saturated too. The River Thames burst its bank early this week and we've been on flood alert ever since. But what does this mean? Is flooding expected? Is there a danger to life? I don't know. The Environment Agency don't tell us. It's a nightmare to think I will be flooded. They're had it real bad in the Midlands. It seems what scientists say about climate change and global warming is true. What do you think? During your darkest days of winter, I do wish I could give you and Pepper a warm cuddle. I do wish it.

    • @RootsandCalluses
      @RootsandCalluses  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From what I've read, the Thames is going down and damage to property is no longer likely, so I would not worry too much for now. As someone who has spent the last years studying (and educating others) about the very real risks of climate change and the threats connected to how humans treat this planet, I can definitely tell you: yes, it's real. And it is a lot worse than most people seem to want to come to terms with. But we need urgent and drastic action now, so we might not have time to wait until people have come to to terms with just how real that threat is. A lot of the current issues are connected to the El Niño weather pattern, so this isn't all climate change, but climate change influences how extreme weather patterns like El Niño behave, so it's all connected. Stay warm, my unknown friend :)

    • @buddieanon6533
      @buddieanon6533 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had no idea that you have been studying climate change. If you've mentioned this in a previous video, please forgive me because I'm still in catch-up mode with your vlogs. As a big fan of Sir David Attenborough, I've been watching his nature documentaries for many years, including the likes of Planet Earth and Blue Planet. He's a natural treasure here in the UK. And at 97, he still travels around the world to give talks and make presentations. But I remember, a few years ago, he did a couple of programmes on climate change on the BBC. And, from what I remember, he said "nature is in crisis" and many species of wildlife, especially birds in the UK, are in decline and being destroyed at a terrifying speed. At the time, that really struck a cord wth me. Why? Because when I moved into this house, many years ago, we had literally hundreds of starlings swooping in the sky at dusk. Now we have no murmurations. And I rarely see a starling feeding on leatherjackets in the morning. So yeah, I'm sure you're right Kate! I've never heard of the El Nino weather pattern, but will look it up. I'm not totally unknown, am I? Without revisiting my previous comments, I can't remember what I've said, other than I try to live a self-sufficient lifestyle. I do hope you had Pepper are well and keeping warm. @@RootsandCalluses

      @buddieanon6533 My bachelor has been in Marine Ecology, my Master is in Landscape Ecology and Nature Conservation. As the ocean is integral to the climate, I have learned a lot. I have also created an educational series for my other channel.
      El Niño is a weather pattern in the Pacific, so people in Europe tend not to know about it. It affects the entire world, though.
      I deeply respect Sir David Attenborough. He has reached a lot of people with his voice.
