I can relate to the standing out as an electrical engineer on your resume part. Graduated in 2019 with my bachelor's in electrical engineer Did my internship as a MEP engineer not many Electrical Engineers going into construction. Now working as a construction inspector supervising NYC new construction buildings and using the NEC (National Electric Code NFPA 70)
That's awesome, just don't become disconnected from your soldiers, remember what your job is and get to know them and teach them when you can and listen to enlisted who's been in a long time. The enlisted can make or break a officers career, so put them first always. Remember what you are and why a soldier exist. Don't fall in that trap I see so many do when they want the rank for status and show, but that's it. If you remember that you're going to do amazing and go far, good luck !
proud of you dawg i'm thinking to go for my EE degree. i'm currently going studying hvac for associates.i have 30 credits alongside im going to graduate early so i can to utrgv since i live in TX free college is free for everyone who makes less than 100k
This lowkey is a really good idea. Especially going through thenofficer route, which is way better and pays more than enlisted. And joined the army which can at times offer bonuses. I joined the marine corps ten years ago and going foy my cs degree and than the masters, i did have a top security clerance too, so there is loads of opportunities that will open up. Good for you man! Squeeze as much as the military as you can. Depending on the situation you can get real f'd up from them so you can get pretty screwed lol.... so congrats to you man, take care of yourself as good as you can and milk em dry!
I love the MF Peanut pfp. I have my BS in software engineering and struggling to get a job, even with 2 yrs of experience. I'm about to quit my manufacturing job and start traveling across the states and doing freelancing. If it doesn't work out, I'll go back to school for a masters in electrical engineering.
It was definitely smart to get a degree before joining the military because you join as an officer (alright butter bars, just kidding 😂). And you’re right you stand out more, but let’s not forget you sign your life over to the military 😅. As long if you really wanted to be a soldier then that’s what matters most but if you’re doing it for tuition then that’s a big price to pay, so hopefully you’re choosing for the right reasons. Nevertheless, thanks for sharing your story and good luck to you and your sister. Hopefully she’s becoming a soldier because that’s what she really wants.
Ah so its part time and you can still have your main job, and they repay your loans. And you get the clearance which unlocks job opportunities .That sounds like a good deal. But have to wonder about deployment and how long might a deployment be and the risk while deployed.
Deploying as a national guard all depends on your MOS. Some jobs deploy more than others. Like when the Jan 6 riots, a lot of infantry got activated…. For obvious reasons .
As an airborne linguist vet in the Air Force and business owner after that this was the most backwards thing you could’ve done glad you’re happy but it’s definitely not smart the benefits are not a reason to sign your life away for government especially as a black man you can be doing better things for your people than serving Worrying about bills is not really a flex you could’ve done more than well with just an EE degree going into the military to “stand out” is insane the military doesn’t matter to an employer unless you still have your clearance and even then you’re not making more or standing out more than any MD If your goal was money and public perception should’ve just went MD studied 2-3 more years and you’d be a doctor right now and as an anesthesiologist you’d start off making 300k and max out anywhere from 500-800k (with OT) and retire with 15-30 Million with no fbi background check , no OCS, no stupid rules to follow for a country that could care less about you but that’s just my opinion
So far the army has only brought me net positives in my life. And the MOS I selected. Ive always wanted to join, but the benefits tipped the balance in favor of joining. To become an anesthesiologist from a Bachelors degree , there is another 8 years of school and training. I would be 34 before I make any money... with an average debt of around $300,000 to $400,000 or more. I would take this path over that one any day.
@ total is 8 years of schooling, you’re a doctor by year 8 and you’re getting paid about 50-60k for 2-3 years in residency to shadow other doctors then you get a 300k base salary which goes up to a 4-500k base if you move to any major city or even small city of choice and your student debt is gone after 2 years working that’s 100% a better lifetime ROI than the route you chose I understand you may not think so or agree but math doesn’t lie 15-30 million over a lifetime vs at max 2-4M over a lifetime In your current profession 🤷🏾♂️ Not even shitting on your choice that’s just facts
Yes but the 80k you were saving for a down payment you get to keep it cash. And maybe invest it so now you have you house value appreciating and your home .

My family is from Ghana but came to the states years ago. I’m currently working towards a Mechanical's Engineering degree first year . Had some people advise me to join the Navy. Should I finish school first or and join after or join now and finish school after?
FINISH SCHOOL FIRST! They cover all federal student loans you earned before enlisting... So you have wiggle room to rack up to their limit. If I had known , I definetly would of collected much more to have a more comfortable time in college, and not loose so many hours working instead of studying.
Do you have Green Card? Or do you get there as asylum seeker? Just wondering since refugees can't join the Navy and the number of Ghanaian green card recipients is very low?

Could you explain that "officer route" ? This has peaked my interest as I just started studying.
Why would a security clearance matter in the civilian world?
@@Anton43218 many top positions in EE/software require TS clearance at minimum

Definitely wanted to serve. But the incentives helped one make that final leap.
